EXCLUSIVE: Lifetime is closing the book on dramedy Drop Dead Diva after four seasons. I’ve learned that the cable network has opted not to order a fifth season of the show starring Brooke Elliott as a dead aspiring model trapped in the body of an intelligent, curvy lawyer. The decision comes three months after Season 4 of Drop Dead Diva wrapped its run on Lifetime. I hear the series producer Sony Pictures TV may shop it elsewhere.
Drop Dead Diva was one of two scripted series Nancy Dubuc inherited when she took over Lifetime in 2010, along with veteran drama Army Wives, which is undergoing casting and creative changes as it heads into a seventh season. There had been speculation that Lifetime brass felt Drop Dead Diva did not fit into the network’s shift toward edgier fare. The network tried to shake things up last season with the casting of Kim Kardashian in a recurring role. Ratings-wise, Drop Dead Diva has been a solid performer since its July 2009 premiere, which drew 2.8 million viewers. Its most recent season averaged consistently over 2 million viewers an episode in Live+Same Day.
Lifetime delayed a final decision on Drop Dead Diva until the last moment so it can look at some of its current pilots. The move to cancel Diva indicates that the network’s executives probably like what they have seen so far on the pilot front. Coming up on the network are the seventh season of Army Wives and second cycle of The Client List, which will premiere in the spring, and new dramedy Devious Maids, which will launch later this year.

I am very disappointed! This was my favorite show BY FAR.. It was such a feel-good show. Always put me in a good mood. So much of what’s on TV nowadays has such gloomy undertones. This one was clean, funny and even after 4 seasons it still had me captivated.
I think lifetime is making a BIG mistake. It’s the only show of theirs that I watch. Lifetime is going on boycott!!

I can’t believe you dropped the show Drop Dead Diva from your 2013 schedule. I loved that show, it was entertaining and funny and very well written. Please reconsider putting this show back on the air. Get rid of Kim Kardshian, she didn’t add anything to the show. You need to do more with both of your main characters, especially the blond, she is fantastic. One mistake you made is you let the lead character consider marriage, that’s when it become boring. Let her do her job, a lawyer, it was interesting on how she came up with brilliant conclusions to difficult cases. That is what made the show interesting and I like her secretary, she was amazaing and added to the main characters part. She was there for her when she needed her most. Please, Please reconsider canceling Drop Dead Diva. Maybe you can revamp the story line, maybe that would help. Get some more interesting actors to help. They could be recurring status and see who fits the best. DON’T CANCEL DROP DEAD DIVA, I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO IT COMING BACK ON IN THE SPRING OR SUMMER! Thank You.

I agree with everyone that doesn’t want the show to be canceled. It was a funny,uplifting show with a normal looking woman playing the lead roll. Why is it that all the shows I love are getting canceled? Don’t we the 2 million viewers have a say in the matter?
Oh come on~not another cancelled show. Please bring back Diva. My husband even enjoyed the show. It’s light hearted fun and had suspense. All the cast are fun to watch. I am so tired of the reality shows. Reconsider!!!!!!!

I have been patiently waiting for Drop Dead Diva to return. I had no idea it had been cancelled. I am sure you don’t care, but I believe ABC felt the impact whenever they cancelled One Life to Live and All My Children. I know I have not watched ABC since then. By reading the posts regarding this, you may have the same reaction. Another one of my favorite shows was cancelled on another network (The Finder)but at least there was a good reason for that (one of the stars passed away). This makes no sense. You could have at least finished the storyline off with one more season. Please reconsider the cancellation for the many fans of the show.

I have been waiting for the show to come back on and now I am upset to find out it’s not. It is not often a show is on about a full figured women that is so awesome. It makes me look at myself differently, I feel beauitful just watching it. Brooke is a wonderful person and I believe she makes all women feel more confident about themselves.
I think that show is awesome. I hate to think of not being able to watch it anymore. You should reconsider and put it on. You are going to be disappointing a lot of people.

i waited for the new season , my partner and i would watch it all the time and record incase we missed something , we got some followers as well , friends loved it, how sad , get rid of the dam reality shows we hate them .. we will miss d d d . how sad .. i,ll never understand why they get rid of great shows and dumb ass shows stay on …oh well guess i wont be watching lifetime anymore.

One of my favorite and well written shows! I look forward to this coming back each year and miss it after the last episodes have aired. Hopefully they will shop it to another network that gets more viewers as this is a hit! With programs like New Girl getting huge ratings I shake my head an wonder what the heck! Divas is SO MUCH BETTER! A mistake on the magnitude of cancelling Harrys Law and Taxi.

I am LIVID. Drop Dead Diva is no doubt Lifetime’s best show, especially due to its fourth season, which has tied the series back to the creativity and storylines of its first season. While the second and third seasons may have been a bit dull in terms of overall story arcs, each episode was still highly entertaining, and season four has most definitely improved upon any of its possible faults.
I am in absolute SHOCK! How could they end the series like this?! I pray that they sell it to another network.

That’s right! The good,fun, and interesting shows get cancelled for another season of “another reality show that we don’t need” and the continuing stories of “women and men who can not stay faithful and honest with the people they love”. Have our society hit the very bottom of the gutter. I give up on lifetime and most of the other networks, now I just watch DVD’s and you can find some decent stuff on YouTube, believe it or not.
I agree, mistake to cancel. If they had kk on it last season thinking to improve, that was mistake also–ratings probably went other way because – IMO – viewers are tired of hearing,seeing kk & her clan & would not want to watch episodes of her on DDD.

It gives the fans false hope.
It may happen but most of the time, it’s a rarity for this to happen, sans Cougar Town which got a reprieve on TBS but I can’t expect that show to last after this season is over with.

It’s unlikely to come back – there’s only been about 8 live-action scripted shows in the last 15 years,out of over 200 series cancled on both Broadcast and Cable that have come back. thoses are slim odds.
It’s not coming back – Sony’s PR in play hoping someone will come to them. Hollywood reporter noted there were some costs issues that also played into Lifetime’s decision to end the show.
They have 30 days to get a deal done – after that, the actors are released from contract – clock is ticking.
“Arrested Developement” only partly counts, since it’s coming back on Netflix, and tied into the upcoming feature film production.
If you’re holding Scrubs up as an example, just remember the disastrous final season when they tried to convert the show. I was a HUGE fan…but that final season was a disaster.
If I remember correctly, Southland started out on one of the big four networks and it was moved to TNT so it does happen but not as often as we’d like.
They announce that to whip up the fans. As has been demonstrated in the past, if the fans make enough noise about wanting to see the show continue, it’ll make the big guys take notice and increase its chances.

HUGE Mistake Lifetime! You have a show that is doing well in numbers of viewers and is one of your best shows on your Network besides Army Wives and then you foolishly cancel it. Why not try the new shows during the summer or have Drop Dead Diva air during the summer when other networks have re-runs and reality shows on. I know it is a long shot that another network will pick it up but I really hope it happens, just to show Lifetime what kind of fools they have running their programming dept.
What would have even prompted Lifetime and the show’s producers to want that trashbag Kardashian as an “actress” is beyond imagination and yet their reason was to spike the show’s ratings? REALLY??!! Talk about a show truly jumping the shark? This move certainly did that and doomed this show for good. Just keep her away from any project from here on out!

What a load of crap! Lifetime is crazy to drop this show. It’s one of the best on their network. This is horrible news. Not many show cancellations would upset me to this extent, but this one is just wrong. I hope Sony does shop this and it gets a chance at a new life elsewhere.

Only in Hollywood does the logic “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” NOT apply. Why would they cancel a well loved show with good ratings??? Why would they shoot themselves in the foot. Not EVERYONE wants edgy… some people just want a fun and pleasant show to watch.

Bummer! Esp as they didn’t give them a chance to end it properly, with advanced warning. It was the only reason I tuned in to Lifetime except for the occasional true crime pic. Not surprising, though, given their penchant for exploitative material like The Client List Yuck. “reality” is Dubuc’s area of expertise, so who knows what other scripted treats are in store. We can hope! But definitely unhappy with this decision. :-/

What a freaking awful decision! The show was still great, it was still bringing in ratings, there are so few good shows like this on the air which aren’t reality shows.

I agree. My time with Lifetime will be limited, very limited. Diva was the best and it was the ONLY show my Daughter and I like to watch together. Hopefully some other network will pick it up and Lifetime can feel the empty pockets of progress.

One of the things they needed to do was have more episodes and the other thing they should have done is show reruns so people don’t get used to not seeing it.
I am soooooo super disappointed! I loved how smart all the characters were and I loved that it was a show about breaking stereotypes and I mostly loved that the majority of the actors were in their 30s. I felt like it was a show I could identify with! I really hope someone else picks up the show! It was amazing!!!
