EXCLUSIVE: Lifetime is closing the book on dramedy Drop Dead Diva after four seasons. I’ve learned that the cable network has opted not to order a fifth season of the show starring Brooke Elliott as a dead aspiring model trapped in the body of an intelligent, curvy lawyer. The decision comes three months after Season 4 of Drop Dead Diva wrapped its run on Lifetime. I hear the series producer Sony Pictures TV may shop it elsewhere.
Drop Dead Diva was one of two scripted series Nancy Dubuc inherited when she took over Lifetime in 2010, along with veteran drama Army Wives, which is undergoing casting and creative changes as it heads into a seventh season. There had been speculation that Lifetime brass felt Drop Dead Diva did not fit into the network’s shift toward edgier fare. The network tried to shake things up last season with the casting of Kim Kardashian in a recurring role. Ratings-wise, Drop Dead Diva has been a solid performer since its July 2009 premiere, which drew 2.8 million viewers. Its most recent season averaged consistently over 2 million viewers an episode in Live+Same Day.
Lifetime delayed a final decision on Drop Dead Diva until the last moment so it can look at some of its current pilots. The move to cancel Diva indicates that the network’s executives probably like what they have seen so far on the pilot front. Coming up on the network are the seventh season of Army Wives and second cycle of The Client List, which will premiere in the spring, and new dramedy Devious Maids, which will launch later this year.

For shame! I truly enjoyed this show. Witty and light hearted its actually the only show I watch on Lifetime.
I really enjoyed this show, and was always pleasantly surprised at how good the writing could be. But I’m sort of relieved at this decision — the writers had written themselves into such a corner with the insane “twist” in the season finale that this is probably for the best.
What do they have besides that Renee Zellweger 60s show?
Are you kidding me?! I’ve been a faithful drop dead diva fan & have watched every episode! For lifetime &/or the director to cancel the show right @ the point when Owen dies & real Jane enters Owens body asking “where am I” its almost like a really bad April fools joke to cancel the show. You’re making a really bad mistake
I’m a bit curvy myself & I’ve actually learned to be more confident with my body. I’ve even wanted to maybe make a pake like Stacy did. I’m really sad that I won’t be able to see the show anymore
This sucks BIG time. Great show, amazing cast, great stories, I was never bored with this show. It was wonderful. I really hope another network picks it up. Now even the good ratings get you a renewal? Then what does it take???
This is what happened to Kyle XY on ABC Family. Cancel a great show with constant views because the networks wants to move in a different direction. Well, guess what? None of those shows lasted and none of the new ones replacing DDD will either. DDD is the only thing that attracted me to the network. Just deleted that channel out of my line up, one less to flip through.
NOOOOOO. I loved that show. But the writing was on the wall during last season because first they had Kim Kardashian on then the season ender when Jane came back as Owen was to weird. But I wanted to see Jane finally get back with Grayson
Lifetime is making a grave mistake with canceling Drop Dead Diva! The article pointed out how consistent its viewers have been. They must be smoking pot, what idiots! I am quite pissed! Everyone, write Lifetime and DEMAND they revive this amazing show. It floors me how they are killing this show and showing Double Divas. I like boobs as much as the next guy, but DD is tasteless garbage.
Cougar town… But that’s the only show I’ve seen continue on a new network…may be others.. None I can think of but maybe the cougar town example leaves hope for diva and shows alike.. Though I don’t know what network diva would fit into… As much as I hate lifetime, it fit there, it seemed… Ps, this sucks. Never know if Grayson has a second chance at “deb” now… I’d like small web series for shows that get cancelled and leave u hanging. It’d be nice… Crap.
Are you INSANE??? I LOVE this show!! change your mind already
Seriously! This is one of the best shows on television! I am so tired of quality televisions shows being canceled for all this reality crap that keeps ending up on the networks. With the exceptions being, American Idol, America’s Got Talent, Dancing with the Stars, So you think you can dance, The Voice because they all have a purpose, but everything else is just really bad fricking fluff. Has anyone really watched an episode of Honey Boo Boo? Come on people, give the american audience more credit than that. Take the junky fluff off the air and keep the quality programming on the air and the people will still be there.
another Lifetime Mistake. What a shame.Guess the have to make room for more crap
If Bravo is really serious about getting into scripted programming, they would be wise to pick-up DDD. It fits their target demo perfectly.
Nooooo!!! I so enjoyed this show. I am so sick of all the reality crap on TV. This show was fun, engaging and a great way to wind down on a Sunday before a work week.
So disappointing!!
Perhaps if they aired the show more frequently the viewership would have been better. The super long waits between seasons was killer.
I will miss the cast!!
Oh yeah and “make things more edgier by adding Kim K”….just a note….not everyone cares about the K Klan. In fact some of us shun anything and everything that mentions them. They are just fame wh0res.
So disappointed! I loved the show!!
Drop Dead Diva was one of my favorite shows, I am extremely bummed! I’m so sick of “reality shows,” which we all know can’t all be true reality. For once there was a show with a storyline that opened peoples minds to other possibilities. I really appreciated the writer’s creativity. I hope another Network snaps up this gem, so Lifetime can see what a huge mistake they made.
Hmmm…what’s next? Project Runway?
This is what you get for promoting Kim Kardashian! I’m glad! Anything that promotes those low rent Beverly Hills barn animals should be shunned by all of society!
LOL
I’m absolutely speechless. The ratings were good, everything worked just fine and they cancelled it? Morons! Total morons that’s what they are. I thought ratings were everything but I guess not… They left the show with cliffhanger and now I’m never gonna see how it all ended. Shame on you, Lifetime! It was the last show I’ve watched on your network. When people made fun of you I always defended you but enough with that. Yoo’re shitty network and you stay that way if you treat viewers like that.
If only there was a way to give a little closure to a show that ran four seasons with one, over-arching element – y’know, a one-off, two-hour wrap-up, standalone piece – kinda like a Lifetime movie.
Oh wait.
This is Lifetime! Is that even being considered? Pick up from the cliffhanger, let the main characters have it out and then resolve the series! You get two extra episodes for syndication and the DVD set, you get a series finale out of it, and there’s no way the ratings would be worse than any other Lifetime movie. Not to mention the good press and good will that would accompany such a move. This seems like such an easy decision.
Is there anyone in the know about contracts/money who could explain why such an idea would not be feasible in this situation? I’m actually really curious.
It seems that every time a lot of people “Like” a show it gets cancelled! I just got my daughter to watch it and she LOVES it as do I……a really BAD move Lifetime. I sincerely hope it gets picked up by some other network who can see what a a good combination of drama, comedy and romance this show is. I am angry at the stupidity of Lifetime!
NO. What a mistake! I love this show lifetime has no idea what they are doing. Lets hope that they are aired on a another network. So upset.
What a let down…so very disappointing. I TOO LOVED THIS SHOW! I pray that another network picks it up. Elliott Brooke was so good in her character and the cast was great. I too would hate to see it end.
I will miss watching this show it is one of the very few I enjoy watching.
