EBay has halted sales of NECA’s Django Unchained dolls depicting characters from Quentin Tarantino‘s slavery movie as prices on the auction website jumped upwards of $2,000 after complaints from civil rights groups led The Weinstein Company to stop production on the action figures, which were also pulled from retailer shelves. Listings for the dolls “were removed as they were in violation of our Offensive Materials policy”, an eBay representative tells Deadline. EBay forbids offensive products “that graphically portray graphic violence or victims of violence, unless they have substantial social, artistic, or political value” including “racially or ethnically offensive language, historical items, reproductions, and works of art and media”.

Censorship anybody? A doll depicting violence? So,I guess GI joes dolls are next. Then army dolls. Then toy guns. Then Toy battle ships. All war memorabilia- war is violent and grotesque… What’s next?
I WANT MY GRAPHIC VIOLENCE/VICTIM OF VIOLENCE TOYS!
Wow this is so fucking stupid it is unbelievable. A doll is offensive? Can’t even believe this.
Django was great–and the merchandise (although not for me) is totally fine.
@Censorship anybody?
Umm welcome to private property and the internet which is mostly comprised of private property. It happens all over the internet and is perfectly legal. Even this site will censor speech they don’t like.
You seem to be confused, we aren’t arguing over whether this is illegal or not. We are arguing over censorship. And most agree, that this is in fact censorship and petty censorship at that. Just because you are legally permitted to do something, doesn’t mean you should do it.
Um, there’s still an elephant in the room… it’s called Inglourious Basterds.
The sad thing is, nobody really cared about the dolls until complaints started. Now they’re a HOT item. Fail.
Reminds me of huge uproar over the Bush mannequin head in Game of Thrones. Nobody said a word for months until someone got offended.
Banning dolls based on a film…wow. I could see doing that if the doll was a REAL individual who committed horrendous acts of violence, but a fictional character from a movie?
Ebay currently has 292 listings for Jason Voorhees action figures. Luckily Friday the 13 movies do not graphically portray graphic violence or victims of violence.
So will they be taking down their Song of the South merchandise, too?
That depends. Do you guys still play it at your klan rallies?
Wait, so it’ll be ok to sell the movie itself on eBay when it comes out, but selling figures based on the movie is off limits? Huh?
So…if Django Unchained wins Best Picture at the Academy Awards, will that grant it sufficient cultural cache to meet eBay’s requirement for artistic or cultural value?
“unless they have substantial social, artistic, or political value”
How do these not have artistic and social value??? The whole point of the film is a slave is freed and uprises and is taught to bounty hunt and kill the white people who oppressed him. How is that not both artistic and social?
Talk about stupidity in censorship and the complete misunderstanding of the film and giving into unfounded complaints. Sure, there is a need for Civil Rights groups when racism still exists. But pick your battles, dudes — this shouldn’t be one of them.
So I can buy the Go Go KILL BILL action figure on eBay who’s holding the ball and chain weapon she uses to try and kill in the movie, who’s character castrates a man in the movie, a f’ing Asian schoolgirl fetish whiteboy fantasy, and somehow this doesn’t “graphically portray graphic violence” or is not “racially or ethnically offensive”.
Go Go figure.
ebay sucks, and they need to get out of the censorship business.
The comment about Oscars makes a good point – it’s already been nominated for several, so it already has “cultural value.”
Friday the 13th on the other hand (or Chainsaw or Saw or any of them) have none – but they remain.
It’s rank hypocrisy. The dolls are just standing there; they don’t represent anything. Stupid.
i have never heard something so fkd up. do an ebay search “friday the 13th” OR “Jason”. 112,426 active listings related to violence with no point except to be violent!!!!
Also if this is so offensive why not at least allow it on the adults only part of the site?
I may not like all of QT’s stuff but this is just a pathetic display of FALSE OUTRAGE & FALSE censorship towards the movie.
I believe a network showing of “Ghostworld” is deserved after all of this fake outrage and political correctness. remeber all of the “outrage” over “Cooks Chicken”? just pathetic.
Come on, Guys! Ebay gets a cut off of every sell. Then PayPal (which Ebay owns) gets there cut off of every payment. Ban the dolls, make them a “Collectors Item” and watch the sale price sky rocket. They are still selling on Ebay!! The cheapest one is at $187 right now. Ebay is going to make a fortune off this. It has nothing to do with being racially sensitive or frowning upon violence. It has EVERYTHING to do with making money and someone is going to make tons off of this!
they still have the roots movie available… How is that any different??
I want to buy my dolls!!!!
eBay started this unfair practice a while back. I sell 1:6 scale war figures which include Nazi war criminals. eBay has punished me by removing my “Man-Dolls” and making me eat the fees for which they were posted. But the ironic thing about it is, you can sell Hitler stamps and even youth knives! Talk about a double standard!?!?
Nothing more heartbreaking than the thwarted squealing of the self-entitled, over-privileged.
