EXCLUSIVE: I’ve just learned that one of the longtime writers and producers of Late Show With David Letterman, Matt Roberts, is becoming the new head writer effective immediately. The previous head writers Justin and Eric Stangel will remain as writers and producers with the show
but also get a fat new multiyear development deal with Worldwide Pants, the production company run by Letterman and Rob Burnett. ”The Stangel brothers are going to remain with the show as part of the deal because we need them,” Rob Burnett just told me. ”These guys are as good as it gets.” The twosome have had an unusally long and successful 14-year run as Letterman’s head writers and now will turn a lot of their attention to coming up with TV shows in any format for Worldwide Pants. “For people like this super valuable to the show, this deal keeps these guys from walking,” Burnett said. He especially wanted to ensure the pair were signed to a deal in order not to repeat what happened when Letterman writers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, who walked out the door of Worldwide Pants and created the long-running and profitable franchise How I Met Your Mother. I happen to think the Stangel Brothers are hilarious (remember their online antics with Bill Scheft during the writers strike?) and look forward to their scripted and unscripted pitches. “Whatever they want to do,” Burnett told me.
Meanwhile, Roberts will fly solo as head writer after working his way up from an intern to the talent department as a guest wrangler, then a segment producer, and also a writer. ”Great writer. He’s super funny and talented,” Burnett told me. The changing of the guard comes just as Jimmy Kimmel has entered the 11:35 late-night talk wars with Leno and Letterman. ”I don’t think it really does affect us,” Burnett told me. “Every day you do the best you can do and put on the funniest show you believe is good.” As far as ratings with the new troika during the week that Kimmel premiered in the earlier time slo, it presumably sparked more curiosity than usual. Leno was still ahead last week with 2.4/6, while Letterman and Kimmel tied with 2.2/5.

Way to far to the left…He is out of touch with Main Street USA. It’s funny to do political humor if it is edgy and fairly balanced…The jokes about Sarah Palin and family were just vicious and below him…I stopped watching then.
I agree. I used to watch him in the 80s and 90s, and he’s not even funny anymore. I’m tired of comedians who don’t think anything Obama does is funny or stupid (even though there is plenty of rich material).
Bush can’t open a door–hilarious-played ad nauseum. Obama can’t open a door–must be censored from everyone by the media and comedians.
I’m sorry guys but these guys aren’t as funny as you think in the “inner circle.” In fact, Leno makes your writers look like high school kids. I’m a real writer, unique, up beat funny, and more. Have you forgotten what cre*ive means??? I think so. call me when you want to get back into the rating race. Terry
I cannot wait for the day when a kick ass funny woman (like me, but I don’t want that much work) hosts a Late Night show. When Tina Fey & Amy Poehler co-hosted Saturday Night Live, they had that place rockin’.
Letterman was great when he was late late night.
Ferguson kicks all their azzes now!
All of these shows are just shills to sell movie tickets, TV shows and bad books. Relying on them as a news or commentary source is shows a lack of depth.
Letterman is NOT funny. Insulting and embarrassing others is just mean and stupid. It’s not funny. It’s BORING!
Regarding Letterman vs Leno:
1) Picking a host for these talk shows has to be one of the toughest jobs. You cant simply select by looking at the ratings during tryouts by a couple of guys. The guy you select has to have a quality that will let him wear well with the audience over many years. Conan was one of those guys that seemed promising to start. But he has a quality that rubs a significant portion of the audiance the wrong way. The suits at NBC screwed up with their early promises to Conan, but in the end they made the right decision by showing him the door.
2) Jay leno has one of the quickest comedy minds I have ever seen. In conversation with his guests, he always seems to find the joke in any line of conversation. His negative is that his monologs are very gag intensive…very formulaic. For me, its easy to tire of that approach to comedy. But NBC has always given Leno a lot of support with all the bits his staff works up. The man on the street interviews he does. The tonight show is more of a comedy machine with Leno as the front man.
Letterman has a more natural style and I don’t believe CBS spends near as much in the production of his show. In my opinion, Dave is the better host, but he is not without weaknesses. And sadly he is losing energy as he ages. At times he seems to lose track of what is going on.
3) Who will be taking over for Dave: Its an obvious question. Letterman can’t have that many years left in him. The talk about his two previous head writers moving away from the show, maybe for them to work with possible successors. I don’t know if Craig Ferguson is the obvious successor to Dave. We may be in for a couple years of guest-hosts before they decide on Daves replacement.
I read, I think in the War For Late Night book, that Ferguson has it in his contract that when Letterman steps down, Craig gets the Late Show. I think this would be a mistake with Kimmel now as direct competition.
Craig has gotten bored, he seems distracted during interviews, and he’s using the robot as a crutch during the monologue, which used to be insanely clever, but is now just a ramble.
Kimmel’s jokes are so tight and Kimmel is the least political of all the hosts, making him my favorite. The country is in a mess, there’s nothing funny about politics, and when I tune into a comedy show I want to escape.
all of this (free flowing commentary) further proves that our country is a great place to be a human being… blessings beyond previous expectations, all!
The original story had to do with Letterman and his writers. How did Jay Leno get into this? There is so much jealousy of Jay that the only thing I can ascertain is that Mr. Leno is much, much better and there is much jealousy due to that. Jay is also a gentleman and has morals; I haven’t seen the same from David Letterman who, by the way, I find quite annoying and NOT funny. Actually, he’s kind of toxic. Again, I haven’t heard Mr. Leno say anything about any other late night show host and I’ve certainly heard a lot about Jay from the others. The Reason? They all know Jay is better. Jimmy Fallon is certainly amazingly good but the show is on a little late for me.
jay leno & jimmy fallon are a great team. the others can’t/just don’t measure up to them. also, i’ve never heard jay say a rotten thing about the other hosts. he’s cool, doesn’t knock the others to make himself seem better, & has the best timing, sportsmanship, and show.
Dave is an icon. I looked this up to see if his writers changed…HAS GOTTEN FUNNY. DAVE IS FUNNY EVEN WHEN HE ISN’T TRYING….he has natural wit….Dave is right up there with the greatest…love ya dave
