Fandango set records for ticket sales and traffic in 2012, the NBCUniversal-owned movie website reported today. Ticket sales grew 57% compared with 2011, with monthly visitors up 34% year-over-year. Mobile ticket sales increased 171% year-over-year — 30% of the overall sales total — thanks in part to 31 million downloads of its mobile app in 2012. The boosts were also fueled by new theater deals with AMC, Regency and Southern, increasing its network, as well as partnership pacts with portals Yahoo Movies, AOL Moviefone and MSN Movies. Fandango also ventured into original series in 2012, hiring away Dave Karger from Entertainment Weekly and launching the awards-season interview show The Frontrunners last month, one of several planned. “In 2013, we’ll continue our momentum and deliver advertising partners, exhibitors, and moviegoers even more products, services, and platforms that super-serve their needs”, Fandango president Paul Yanover said today in a release announcing the results.
