SUNDAY AM 2ND UPDATE: The big news is that washed-up Arnold Schwarzenegger flopped in 10th place playing a washed-up lawman in The Last Stand (2,913 theaters). “Nobody wants to see Arnold,” one rival studio exec giggled to me. Lionsgate should demand its money back from Arnie who clearly can’t open a movie anymore even with a ‘B’ CinemaScore from audiences. Pic made only a pathetic $6.7M for the 3-day weekend and no more than $7.7M for the 4-day holiday. I don’t think that even covers Schwarzenegger’s cigar bill. The actioner featuring The Guvernator’s first solo comeback to the big screen was just one of the major releases that opened for the long Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Saturday’s business “was shockingly good,” execs told me, once again demonstrating that the theatrical business is kicking butt with audiences even if Arnold isn’t. Bombing as well was Emmet-Furla/New Regency’s critically panned dramatic thriller Broken City (2,620 theaters) breaking Mark Wahlberg’s long string of box office hits. Also starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Russell Crowe (thankfully, not singing) and distributed by Fox, it debuted only #5 and finished with a sorry $9.5M for the 3-day weekend and $10.9M for the four day holiday. That star power should have generated at least $25M for the MLK weekend with its ‘B’ CinemaScore from audiences.
No question that Universal’s supernatural thriller Mama (2,647 theaters) - “presented” by Guillermo Del Toro to lend it credibility – debuted #1 Friday and stayed tops through Monday with an overperforming $28.1 for the 3-day weekend and $33.2M for the 4-day holiday. ”This is an incredible result for a little film. We think it was the advertising on Twilight [Breaking Dawn Part 2] and the really scary trailer targeted to girls,” a Uni exec preens. It succeeded despite an unimpressive ‘B-’ CinemaScore from audiences. I can’t recalll when an actress was in Hollywood’s top two films, but Jessica Chastain snags that honor after last weekend’s topper, her Annapurna Pictures/Sony Pictures’ Zero Dark Thirty (2,946 theaters after 5 weeks) came in #2. The chameleon looks almost unrecognizable as a brunette in the new comer.
I’m surprised that Universal Pictures didn’t take the time with me to publicize more fully Del Toro’s role in this $15 million budgeted hit film, trying to dismiss him as “only as an executive producer”. In fact Guillermo took the original short film by Andy Muschetti and, from the moment of inception, developed it hand-in-hand. Del Toro even did informal passes on the screenplay. He chose Neil Cross as the co-writer for the project (they had worked together on Mountains Of Madness), then took the film to Universal where he
actively campaigned for a greenlight and cast Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Jessica Chastain (working with her
agents and manager himself). He even located the production offices in Pinewood Studios where he was prepping and would shoot Pacific Rim so he could be available and ready to assist Barbara and Andy Muschetti. I’m told that Del Toro would revise Andy’s storyboards every day before call, go through dailies, and work in the editing room. He chose the composer Fernando Velazquez to score because they had worked together twice already (on Orphanage and Julia’s Eyes). ”Guillermo was present at all crucial stages of pre- and post- production, including color timing and final mix,” a rep tells me. “He worked closely with Universal on the movie’s campaign and launch – to the point that ‘A Mother’s Love Is Forever’ was his suggested tagline at the very first meeting he spent pitching the feature for Universal.”

Arnold is 66 years old, at some point it’s enough.
So Well put…and people are sick of his game of who he thinks he is rather then who he real is as a man in life. The public is sick of him.
In truth Silver Linings and Zero Dark thirty should be the BO leaders this weekend, but that doesn’t look likely. This is with Oscar nominations and all kinds of critical acclaim. So the scary film Mama gets the lion’s share, big surprise, didn’t Texas Chainsaw do great business a couple of weekends ago?I saw Broken City and it was good with good performances from everyone. The critics apparently thought otherwise. Maybe it’s time for some critics to retire.
A well marketed PG-13 horror movie will always win. The Ring, The Grudge, Woman in Black, and so on. The only downfall is they sometimes drop off fast. 0D30 and SLP are platform releases but have been proven to have legs. Way to go Jessica Chastain! It just goes to show the shifting change towards women at the box office.
Hey, I liked it. It’s not an Oscar winner…and it never claimed to be. Go if you want to turn your brain off for an hour or two and enjoy some stupid but well crafted action scenes.
A) TLS will do big DVD/VOD business, and B) look for it to do 5xUS numbers internationally. Its the Expendables with only one star. Don’t write Arnie off just yet. And can we get with the 21stC already? US BO is only a decent portion of the pie now, not the whole pie. Look at Life of Pi or Les Mis or almost anything explosive with Stallone or Willis in it. Enjoy your giggle Nikki, why not. But Arnie will be sardonically smoking cigars on the big screen for at least Eastwood years.
Also, Broken City is effing awful. Its like a Lifetime director trying to make a Micheal Mann movie. And i like the Hughes bros (although this split isn’t going well). With this and Gangster Squad, do we now realise that imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery?
“Its the Expendables with only one star” – that’s right – but Expendables2 made %17 less than Expendables1 (which didnt have Arnold and Bruce) – so what does that indicate? That Arnold’s participation in E2 helped it?
Lay off Russell Crowe and his singing. ENOUGH.
I don’t think Mamma and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are at all comparable. I’m not a horror fan myself, but I’m going to give Mamma a chance because I loved Pan’s Labyrinth. Del Toro is a serious, artistic filmmaker, and grown-ups will go see his films with their teens.
Del Toro is a good filmmaker, but he didn’t make Mama. Like the awful “Don’t be Afraid of the Dark,” he just produced it. In fact Del Toro has directed relatively few movies.
[ sarcasm]
At least Amour will break 100,000 tickets sold in the U.S. this weekend, justifying it’s Oscar nominations…
[ /sarcasm]
100,000 tickets sold in under 20 theaters is pretty damn good. Why the hate? Or is A HAUNTED HOUSE more your speed?
It’s only playing on 15 screens right now, genius. (And most of its showings are selling out.) If you ever actually see the film, THEN you can decide whether its Oscar nominations are justified – based solely on the quality of the filmmaking.
Jessica chastain is on a roll right now back to back #1 movies! Great actress!!
Eating isn’t cheating.
i used to love Arnold but what small-town Texas sheriff has a thick Austrian accent? besides that, the poster with him holding a giant cock/gun with a tag that said “retirement is for sissies” insulted me, America, and the year 2013.
So glad that the awful Arnold’s movie career is now in the toilet, too, along with his reputation. An awful actor, an awful governor, an all-round awful person. A lot of similarities to Lance Armstrong: a former doper, and egomaniacal bully. Unlikely that Arnold’s enormous ego will ever accept the fact that he is no longer relevant and that people just don’t want to see him anymore. His appearance on Diane Sawyer last year remains one of the most pathetic, pandering performances I’ve seen.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Warner Bros) Week 6 [Runs 2,323] PG13
Friday $1.4M, 3-Day Weekend $6.1M, 4-Day Holiday $8.4M, Cume $289.4M
Anybody still think The Hobbit won’t reach 300M domestic?
i disagree with any 1 who thinks it wouldnt cross $300M domestically. Adjusted for inflation, i think it would still be the lowest-grossing LOTR movie (i think LOTR:FOTR made more than $400M in today’s money)
Here’s a thought. Overheard a couple in line last night saying they wouldn’t see The Last Stand because it glorified gun violence and they didn’t want to see a school bus get shot up. Seems like the marketing people should have deleted those shots from the bus scene from the ads. It’s not a terrible film, and no children are in danger, but you would never know from the ads. Major marketing mistake.
give this man a cigar ! I agree, much like TDKR, which was also affected by gun violence
Thats completely FALSE. Dark Knight Rises cannot even be compared in the same sentence with an rated R gun movie. Dark Knight Rises was rated PG13 and guns were one of 10 plot point with guns not even being seen killing anyone like a rated R horror or thriller splatter fest.
DKR also went on to make the following incredible haul:
Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $448,139,099 41.5%
+ Foreign: $632,902,188 58.5%
= Worldwide: $1,081,041,287
DKR did EVERYTHING RIGHT! Do not even compare Lat Stand in the same sentence.
I think when acga hadvatydc says that TDKR was affected by gun violence, he’s referring to the Aurora shooting and not the actual gun use in the movie.
Arnie will rebound on Sat. – given that most of the people likely to see it where working on Friday – not getting out of school early! Sunday will be tough because of the NFL Divisional Playoffs. Worldwide – of course -(where adults actually still go to theaters)- will be solid. Check to see how it compares to SLP then.
Guess what? You were wrong.
Last Stand is a really fun movie. Not sure what all the anti-Arnold nonsense is all about. Seems a bit odd. It’s not like there are really many credible current action stars. They either go to Disney or and get watered down or they’re ‘pretty’.
Last Stand rocked.
Just because a movie bombs or the critics don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. If I like it, for me it’s a good movie.
To say “no one wants to see Arnold” is completely absurd and the idiot who said that should be fired for stupidity. Broken city also tanked and that had a much bigger and well known cast while Last Stand only had Arnold.
And who is really paying any money to see Mama? Really people. That movie doesn’t even seem like it is worth a dollar.
Hey Dave, there is actual evidence that “no one wants to see Arnold” based on the box office results. Well maybe not “no one” but he was clearly no even close to the 1st choice this weekend.
How is that stupid and why would you fire someone for that??
Silver linings playbook is THE best picture of the year and should win the Oscar. Hooray for Jessica chastain! There really doesn’t seem to be anything that must see for at least a few weeks– a result of studios making less films?
Arnie has hit a all-time low, when he is starring opposite Johnny Knoxville. Enough said.
Reports of Arnold’s death may be somewhat exaggerated. His new pal Sylvester Stallone was also assumed to be six feet under until he came up with The Expendables. Are audiences missing the Muscle? Having Explosion Envy? Who knows? But this clever Austrian lothario has shown a real talent for re-invention if nothing else. Don’t count the old boy out.
I love your 1950s publicist style of writing, but it’s safe to say that American moviegoers have officially counted the old boy out this weekend.
”Nobody wants to see Arnold,” one rival studio exec giggled Friday night… Great! Another infantile remark from another infantile studio executive… The man was king when he was making zillions for the same infantile execs. When he was Gov. the same infantile studio execs were fawning all over him… No wonder the industry sucks.
He will be back and these same infants will be drooling again!
Jessica Chastain is nr 1 and nr 2. Respect.
MAMA was seriously terrible. How it even managed to get a B- Cinemascore is amazing. Look for this one to fall off a cliff in week 2. The entire theater walked out angry at the end. Word of mouth is going to kill it.
How was Mama terrible? It had great jump scares and was well made. The entire theater walked out upset? Why? Because of the semi-sad ending? Fuck em. Life doesn’t turn out happy most of the time, fuck anybody who thinks all movies should.
Honestly, I expected Broken City to do worse. I’ve never seen such a poorly marketed and buzz free big name movie with a star studded cast get such a collective shrug from it’s studio. I’m shocked that Last Stand did worse. At least, there’s been *some* hype.
BTW, the Hughes brothers went to my high school.
wow! Arnold’s die-hard fans are all out in full force on this site, with torches and pitch-forks all ready to lynch Nikki. but Last Stand’s pathetic performance shouldnt be surprise to anyone. Even Arnold’s appearance with Sly and Bruce couldnt help Expendables II earn more than its predecessor, which was bad news for Arnold’s return to the big screen in general. I think Last Stand would be lucky to breach $50M domestically, and i am sure Arnold was paid $10M upfront (must be nice). Arnold would have to make something like T5 or ConanIII to regain his status at the box office, much like Sly did with Rocky Balboa and Rambo -remember, he had to get back to to his roots to re-ignite his floundering career
Arnold is already planning to make Conan 3. Rambo/Rocky sequels didn’t help Sly much.
Nonsense. The Rocky and Rambo sequels set up the Expendables perfectly. They showed the world there was life left and were both quite good (especially Rocky). Conan 3 WIll flop though
