SUNDAY AM 2ND UPDATE: The big news is that washed-up Arnold Schwarzenegger flopped in 10th place playing a washed-up lawman in The Last Stand (2,913 theaters). “Nobody wants to see Arnold,” one rival studio exec giggled to me. Lionsgate should demand its money back from Arnie who clearly can’t open a movie anymore even with a ‘B’ CinemaScore from audiences. Pic made only a pathetic $6.7M for the 3-day weekend and no more than $7.7M for the 4-day holiday. I don’t think that even covers Schwarzenegger’s cigar bill. The actioner featuring The Guvernator’s first solo comeback to the big screen was just one of the major releases that opened for the long Martin Luther King holiday weekend. Saturday’s business “was shockingly good,” execs told me, once again demonstrating that the theatrical business is kicking butt with audiences even if Arnold isn’t. Bombing as well was Emmet-Furla/New Regency’s critically panned dramatic thriller Broken City (2,620 theaters) breaking Mark Wahlberg’s long string of box office hits. Also starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Russell Crowe (thankfully, not singing) and distributed by Fox, it debuted only #5 and finished with a sorry $9.5M for the 3-day weekend and $10.9M for the four day holiday. That star power should have generated at least $25M for the MLK weekend with its ‘B’ CinemaScore from audiences.
No question that Universal’s supernatural thriller Mama (2,647 theaters) - “presented” by Guillermo Del Toro to lend it credibility – debuted #1 Friday and stayed tops through Monday with an overperforming $28.1 for the 3-day weekend and $33.2M for the 4-day holiday. ”This is an incredible result for a little film. We think it was the advertising on Twilight [Breaking Dawn Part 2] and the really scary trailer targeted to girls,” a Uni exec preens. It succeeded despite an unimpressive ‘B-’ CinemaScore from audiences. I can’t recalll when an actress was in Hollywood’s top two films, but Jessica Chastain snags that honor after last weekend’s topper, her Annapurna Pictures/Sony Pictures’ Zero Dark Thirty (2,946 theaters after 5 weeks) came in #2. The chameleon looks almost unrecognizable as a brunette in the new comer.
I’m surprised that Universal Pictures didn’t take the time with me to publicize more fully Del Toro’s role in this $15 million budgeted hit film, trying to dismiss him as “only as an executive producer”. In fact Guillermo took the original short film by Andy Muschetti and, from the moment of inception, developed it hand-in-hand. Del Toro even did informal passes on the screenplay. He chose Neil Cross as the co-writer for the project (they had worked together on Mountains Of Madness), then took the film to Universal where he
actively campaigned for a greenlight and cast Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Jessica Chastain (working with her
agents and manager himself). He even located the production offices in Pinewood Studios where he was prepping and would shoot Pacific Rim so he could be available and ready to assist Barbara and Andy Muschetti. I’m told that Del Toro would revise Andy’s storyboards every day before call, go through dailies, and work in the editing room. He chose the composer Fernando Velazquez to score because they had worked together twice already (on Orphanage and Julia’s Eyes). ”Guillermo was present at all crucial stages of pre- and post- production, including color timing and final mix,” a rep tells me. “He worked closely with Universal on the movie’s campaign and launch – to the point that ‘A Mother’s Love Is Forever’ was his suggested tagline at the very first meeting he spent pitching the feature for Universal.”

Aronold was obviously a huge action star throughout the 80′s & 90′s, but he was never known for flat out good acting. The reason folks like ‘Pacino’, ‘Denzel’, ‘DeNiro, ‘Nicholson’, etc can still be relevant in their 50′s, 60′s and so on is because they’re flat out great actors. If your body of work is built more on what you can do physically like ‘Arnold’, than it stands to reason that as you age you’re going to be less effective in films.
I think people forget: Nobody wants to see Arnold in a half-assed, typical, cheap-looking actioner w/the guy from Jackass. Arnold as a bordertown cop? The completely untalented/unlikeable Johnny Knoxville as the comedy sidekick? This was horribly miscast.
But if this were a Terminator movie, or some other event film, and it looked cool, and Arnold said, “I’ll be back!” a few times, then it probably would’ve done far better.
Good point. Much like Harrison Ford in the last Indiana Jones adventure, people will come to see the franchise, regardless of the actor’s age.
No, I’m the person who wondered if Bigelow was going to blame piracy again when her second film underperformed just like her previous did, seeing how it’s been online for weeks already.
Except ZDT isn’t underperforming, so what’s your point? Oh, and it’s her ninth movie, not her second.
For what it’s worth, BROKEN CITY is playing well for audiences who show up. On the critic end, Ebert gives it 3 of 4 stars and NY Times likes it for what it is. Watch BROKEN CITY gain momentum this weekend, especially in light of the word of mouth on MAMA.
He won’t be back
The Last Stand had flop written all over it with or without Arnold. The “comic” relief of Johnny Knoxville in the commercials eliminated any tension from the “Arnold vs. Drug-lord army” premise. When I saw Knoxville in a dumb hat with a you-know-what-eating grin, the best this film could hope for was a 99 cent rental. Substitute the Knoxville character for an old-timer (Duvall or Sam Elliott come to mind), ease up on the “comedy” (Predator had funny moments but they didn’t highlight it in the commercials), and I’d probably be there. I
used to love A.S.’s films, but I’m not going to pay top dollar for what looks like a made-for-
Cable movie. A.S. No longer has the good will of audiences thanks to his stunt work with his maid. He’ll have to actually put out a good movie to get fans back.
Having surpassed the 50 year summit, I think I’ve seen just about everything. But I’m going to skip the 66 yr old action hero. Then again, it might make me feel like a kid again?
Arnold, who I like, just looked really frail and old in Last Stand. He was never a great actor but he was at least passable in Total Recall, Twins and Terminator 1 and 2 and the Conan films. Seeing him with skinny legs in shorts in beginning of Last Stand and him needing a much needed face and neck lift was kind of sad. The movie was all right but not anything special, the script didn’t make much sense and you didn’t really care about most of the characters.
First of all the topic of Arnold flopping is boring and so are You.What’s with you people? You have to much time on your hands?Maybe you have an inferiority complex eh?
The Movie is good, and just because he messed up in his personal life,it doesn’t give you the authority of putting up a stupid smoke screen by saying his movie was bad. News flash Junior it WASN’T
By the way you wish you’d be able to do what this guy is doing at 65!You wouldn’t even come close.
ARNOLD’S MOVIE WAS GOOD,and your Judgement was BAD! Get a Life!
i don’t think it’s that people don’t want to see arnold, it’s that people don’t want to see him as a small time sheriff. king conan is a MUCH more exciting concept than this. this role, pretty much anyone could have done it.
arnold is at his best playing larger than life characters. with the exception of ivan reitman comedies, when he’s done everyman movies in the past they’ve flopped too, like collateral damage. i don’t believe raw deal was a raging success either.
Arnold is the lost American dream. Mirror on the wall is his only fan.
Arnold is a cultural and world icon, a household name. The Last Stand has received a lot of good reviews and they give credit to a brilliant director in Kim-Jee Woon. Arnold is big overseas and he has millions of followers mainly from the physical culture and bodybuilding. Let’s wait for the wordwide box office gross. One thing is certain, Arnold has made a good comeback film and he’s on his way to success once more.
Still admire Arnold’s ability to milk the American people out of their money but I have had enough of him and will not see his movies anymore. Can only take so much BS from Hollywood and this guy has exceeded it.
The Last Stand rocked! Arnold at 65 looks great for his age. It’s really weird and funny when anti-Arnold people here want the “the king of bodybuilding” to fail because they are jealously annoyed of his global fame and clout since they are bunch of clueless “girly men” in their 20s who grew up sad because their only idea of an action star is someone like Chaning Tatum.
I can tell you why Arnold’s movie flopped: because the man who uses a LOT of gunplay in his movies past decided to call guns in movie “entertainment”, therefore permissible in his mind, while talk out his a** against guns in real life. Hypocrisy will always run you with many people. Maybe Arnold needs a RomCom. No wait, that probably wouldn’t work. Just retire, Arnold, Sean COnnery did. I doubt Maria and your love child will demand that much of your fortune.
If all of Arnold’s fans all over the world even have the slightest time and urge to post here and defend their hero, this place would be shut down. Arnold is one of the most successful men (even arguably the most successful) in the history of this planet and has inspired millions of people. You can’t put Arnold down. His legendary biceps is a million times bigger than all his critics combined.
The movie wasn’t bad at all and I can’t stand any of you “so called reviewers” who haven’t even watched it yet. Oh…and the villian was good and for those who care it was a lot more violent that I expected and Arnold did an excellent job in this role. Go out and see it and then love it or hate but till you do your opinion means nothing.
Did anyone on this site panning the movie actually see it? I did and I enjoyed it.
Hasta la vista, Arnold!
Ah-node’s movie is no worse than the rest of this week’s sewage pit.
Everyone point your fingers at me and giggle, but Arnold and Lance Armstrong are still my favorites.
This movie will be forgotten. He’s got other movies coming out that look more interesting.
Ya think, Eddie?
Arnold is like a well known band from the 80s…you like them, but don’t really care to see/hear “new” material. You don’t want to hear Def Leppard’s newest single at a concert…you want to hear Pour Some Sugar on Me. So Arnold doesn’t need original films…his only hope for box office success is to re-visit past successes. The only role I could see Arnold having box office success would be a Conan sequel that plays off the last scene of the original…and older “King Conan.” But aged action stars playing the “I’m old” card is lame…it didn’t work for Harrison Ford in Indy 4 and it won’t work for Arnold.
Um…wasn’t Harrison Ford “revisiting a past success” in INDY 4? And anyway, that movie was a huge hit.
I’ll never pay a penny to see another Ahnold movie.
He’s just Ted Kennedy without the class.
And Teddy had very little.
The problem with the movie was it had a terrible plot. Sure Arnold’s acting wad bad but he had been out from acting for several years. Also the acting from other characters were weak as well. Some of the story doesn’t seem plausible because law enforcement would react much faster than they thought it would. I’m pretty sure that border patrol would have been on scene because it is right there on the border. Someone needs to go select movies for Arnold and decide for him which script has a better plot.
