First American soccer lost its biggest star, British import David Beckham, now it is about to lose its dedicated cable
channel. Fox Networks is planning to relaunch its Fox Soccer Channel as an FX-branded entertainment cable network, a sibling to the cable network that airs Sons Of Anarchy, Louie and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Information about the plan, which is in advanced stages and is already being presented to ad buyers to gauge their interest, was reported by Broadcast & Cable and the LA Times. According to sources, the FX offshoot, dubbed FXX, would be geared towards younger viewers with an emphasis on comedy, creating a cable tandem similar to TNT-TBS where TNT is more older-skewing and drama-focused and TBS goes for younger viewers with comedies. Like its big brother FX, FXX would feature original programming, in addition to some repurposed shows and theatrical movies from FX and fellow sibling FX Movie Channel. There is talk about moving some younger-skewing comedy series from FX to FXX to further differentiate the two networks’ identities. Fox has yet to begin talks with MSO and satellite operators about switching Fox Soccer Channel and its 75 million homes to FXX.
The future of the Fox Soccer Channel had been in limbo ever since Fox and ESPN in October lost the rights to the English Premier League to NBC and its fledgling NBC Sports Network. The remaining soccer programming on Fox Soccer Channel is expected to be folded into Fox’s planned national sports cable network, tentatively named Fox Sports 1, that would compete with ESPN. A spokesman for Fox Networks said in a statement, “We are constantly evaluating our programming offerings and this is just one notion we have considered over the past year or so,” declining further comment.

If this new channel is targeting comedy, they’ll need a new development executive since Nicole Clemens has been also shepherding comedies over at FX and that’s a huge mistake. She thinks “1600 Penn” is funny. The mere mention of her name brings about a consistent rolling of eyes.
What’s wrong with 1600 Penn? I honestly don’t get why people don’t like it. Both of the episodes made me laugh out loud, a rare feat in this day and age.
Humor is subjective. Political humor at its best is satirical and smart, whereas 1600 PENN is like a Chris Farley vehicle without Farley and even with Farley, it would be lame.
FC Barcelona is by far and away the most popular soccer team in the world, why is there no US sports channel broadcasting their games?
There is, it’s called beIN Sport. It launched in the US in August, and they secured US rights to La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, various national cup competitions, as well as multiple FIFA confederation matches and qualifiers. They also broadcast a few select other sports, such as the Handball World Cup. They immediately appeared on Direct TV and Dish (I think) and from there have slowly spread to other cable carriers.
I’ve been very satisfied with their coverage and production crews. Great live broadcasts, replays, news shows, and documentaries. Top notch material and crew. They also have a second channel broadcast in Spanish. Definitely worth getting if your any type of football fan.
I hate to see a football dedicated channel go, but honestly, I never enjoyed Fox Soccer that much; a lot of potential wasted, I think. I’m curious to see how NBC Sports will handle all of their new football content (including their MLS rights) as well as their newly acquired F1 rights (which they took from Fox’s Speed Network)
beIN Sport has the rights to Spanish and Italian soccer in the United States. The channel is owned by Al Jazeera and was just started in the last year. It will be interesting to see what Fox does with the Champions League because I think they still have a few more years on that contract.
yes most popular……….right after United and Madrid LOL
Dammit!
Are we losing our jobs?
Probably.
Well, do you work for the Fox Soccer Channel? Is your job soccer-specific?
It’s on beinsports. I watch every barca game. Comcast has the channel as well as dish
I wonder what might happen to Fox Soccer Plus.
Not to echo what other say but Soccer does not need a specific sports channel it is as popular as any other American sport. I am sad to so FSC go but I feel NBC Sports is the next step for soccer in America to grow. ( on basic cable)
That’s not the only soccer-specific channel in the USA, though GolTV may be in danger because it lost the bulk of its programming to beINSport.
Fox soccer channel has been a disappointment for many seasons. Their broadcasting decisions have been questionable in the past and at times just plain terrible. Now they have Gus Johnson’s abortion of a commentary ruining matches. Why would you prefer Gus Johnson to Martin Tyler or John Champion? These men are professionals who bring class and sophistication to the game. Stop Fox, please. I sincerely hope nbc sports does a better job.
AMEN My brother! Couldn’t have said it better myself.
