When TNT announced last fall it had ordered six episodes for Frank Darabont’s new pilot based on John Buntin’s book L.A. Noir: The Struggle For The Soul Of America’s Most Seductive City, the series was untitled. Darabont had been leaning toward L.A. Noir as a title, but he told the website io9 in an interview posted this week that the videogame company Rockstar squelched that idea with threats of litigation. The “company with the video game called L.A. Noire threatened to sue the shit out of me, TNT, every company that actually ever worked in Hollywood”. The series remains untitled because TNT hasn’t settled on one yet, but Darabont said “I do believe the title is going to be Lost Angels”. TNT’s head of programming Michael Wright described the project as “a sweeping tale of the battle for the soul of the city that was waged between the forces of the LAPD and the West Coast mob” — similar to territory covered by the feature Gangster Squad that was based on a different book.

Officially, Take-Two/Rockstar refuted this claim.

seriously, LA Noire is the lamest game ever. If everyone is gonna sue just cos they have a similar name, then the industry is over.
Hey Mr. Darabont. Thank you for The Shawshank Redemption…a perfect a movie as has ever been made. Here’s a free idea…Not “Lost Angels”…”Lost Angeles” instead. Sounds better and will catch audience’s attention quicker.
Love this idea!
When I heard “L.A. Noir” had been nixed I didn’t see how you could possibly find a title just as good, but “Lost Angeles” would definitely work. It has a much different, and darker, vibe than “Lost Angels.”
Having played the game I can say Rockstar is doing them a favor. The game was a total disappointment.
Let’s see how long Darabont can remain as showrunner before getting booted off by studio execs.
TNT is well-known for being far more showrunner-friendly than AMC, which even dicks around Matthew Weiner. Darabont’ll be there as long as he wants to be.
The last time I checked, you can’t copyright a title. Content, yes. Title, no.
Correct, although there may be some noir-ish similarities, but the networks and producers in this town have their own little agreement to register titles to avoid the appearance of competition.
The issue will come up NOT as copyright, but as trade-mark. Trading goods and services under the brand, or word-mark, or mark “LA Noire”.
I’m suing Rockstar for making a horribly boring game. I love the part where you pick up every freaking object at a crime scene and examine it.
Wow. Amazing gameplay!
Can’t wait for this show. Bernthal is my favorite !
Unbelievable that some silly video game can alter the name of a tv series whose title and premise is based on a book( very good book btw). Looking forward to the series!
The game was announced before the book was published, so the game had the name first. Albeit with an E at the end.
The book came first. John Buntin wrote an article on a LAPD Chief and decided to write ‘L.A. Noir’ in 2004, chronicling the department’s history. It was published in 2009. The video game was released in 2011. Here’s Buntin’s webpage stating that in 2009: http://www.johnbuntin.com/author.html
So, Mr. Darabont ~ you have the rights to The Long Walk. I’m re-reading it for the fourth time. Would make a hell of a movie.
I just want to see Jon Berenthal again.
