Gary Fleder, who directed the pilot for the CW/CBS TV Studios freshman drama Beauty And The Beast, has been recruited by the CW and CBS Studios to helm another drama pilot this season, Oxygen. Like Beauty And The Beast, the project, written by Meredith Averill, chronicles the romance between a girl and a creature. In this case, it is an alien boy who, along with eight others, are integrated into a suburban high school. CBS TV Studios, Ole Prods, Isla de Babel and 360 Powwow produce. This marks WME-repped Fleder’s third pilot for the CW and CBS TV Studios. The previous two, Beauty And The Beast and Life Unexpected, both went to series.
Jeffrey Reiner (Awake) will direct NBC’s drama pilot The Sixth Gun, a Carlton Cuse-produced adaptation of the Oni Press graphic novel. Written by Ryan Condal, The Sixth Gun, produced by Uni TV, is a supernatural Western which follows the story of six mythical guns, each with its own other-worldly powers. WME-repped Reiner has deep ties with NBC and Uni TV. He was director/exec producer on Friday Night Lights and also directed the pilots for the NBC series Trauma and The Event, which he executive produced. He most recently directed Jason Katims’ NBC/Uni TV pilot County last season. But it is the NBC pilot he directed the season before that will probably stir debate among Sixth Gun fans — in 2011 Reiner helmed another comic book adaptation, David E. Kelley’s much talked about Wonder Woman.

New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

Wonder Woman was not Jeffrey’s fault. Kelley had never worked with that much green screen before. . . Jeff is going to crush Sixth Gun!!! I can’t wait for this show to air. It will be a massive massive hit!
Good for ‘Oxygen’…Fleder seems to have a winning track record for pilot pick-ups ala David Nutter, which is what you want for this ‘Roswell’-esque concept…
Reiner on the ’6th Gun’ pilot on the other hand hs me worried. Awake was pushed to mid-season, ‘WW’ MEANWHILE, needs no introduction. May be troubleing season for genre pilots on NBC if that pilot doesn’t perform…
Reiner’s track record not good….not sure why NBC continues their love affair….historically none of his pilots have been very successful?? Are any still on the air???
Fleder rules, but they need to let him make more features, too.
The Sixth Gun is a sure win. It’s riding on the coattails of The Walking Dead. Networks are finally seeing the vast potential in non super hero – independent comic book fare.
The Walking Dead at AMC, The Sixth Gun at NBC (now if only someone would take a serious look at Queen & Country which was also published at Oni Press), The Strain and Powers at FX, and Chew at Showtime. The world is indeed a happy place.
Well, at least for me it is.
