UPDATE, 1 PM:: I can understand why Godzilla is trying to shed producers, because there are plenty. Mary Parent is about done with a deal to come aboard on the producer roster. Parent, whose Disruption banner is based at Paramount, takes the job after working closely with Legendary on the Guillermo del Toro-directed Pacific Rim.
PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE, 8:42 AM: As it stomps its way toward a March production start, Godzilla has two significant developments in the offing. Frank Darabont, who veered into genre territory by launching the AMC series The Walking Dead, has been hired by producer-financier Legendary Pictures to do a final rewrite on the script that was written by The Seventh Son scribe Max Borenstein.
At the same time, Warner Bros-based producers Dan Lin and Roy Lee, who were among the producers who came into Legendary with a Toho rights deal for the iconic reptile, are in a huge battle with the financier-producer. Legendary, which now controls the rights, wants to drop the producers from the film. As it stands right now, the 3D picture will be produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, along with Brian Rogers, the latter of whom was on the ground floor of the Toho deal. The film will be directed by Monsters helmer Gareth Edwards and has been dated for May 16, 2014 release.
A report on Hitfix.com last night mentioned the exits, and painted it amicably. Actually, it could prove as toxic to Godzilla than the time the fire breather took on the smog monster Hedorah. This one’s going to wind up in the courts, I’m told. My understanding is, Lin and Lee refused to reduce the fees they signed on for when the original deal was made. Legendary brass feel they have the latitude to get rid of them and is doing just that, exercising a pay-or-play clause and paying them upfront money to go away, with no back-end or credit on the film. The potential back-end on a global franchise is where the big bucks are.
I’ve also heard that Legendary cited Lin for mentioning the project in recent interviews to fantasy film blogs, though those comments seemed innocuous to me. This is going to be awkward, because neither guy is insignificant and both of them are lot-based producers at Warner Bros, which has money in Godzilla and will distribute worldwide except for Japan, where Toho Co will do the releasing. I’ve been calling the studio since last night to try and get its position on all this, and they just got back to me and issued a no comment. Neither Legendary nor the ousted producers would comment. Lin, by the way, has 15 years on the Warner Bros lot as an executive and producer, and his latest film, Gangster Squad, gets its premiere this evening.

Screw the producers that brought you the big project Legendary and watch the line-up of big producers bringing you more franchises dwindle to nothing.
Yeah, right. As long as they have money to make $150M movies (which they do and will for years), the line will be looooooong and plentiful.
Sure.
But tell those producers they won’t get a credit on their movie, another producer will get it instead and watch the line vanish.
Seriously.
I’m all for a new Godzilla movie as long as it is nothing like the drivel that was made back in 98. Make sure Godzilla looks exactly like the Japanese version and not like that hopped-up iguana on radioactive steroids that was made years ago with Matthew Broderick.
I’m looking forward to this. Also hoping that it’ll bear zero resemblance to the 98 version..! (I loved Monsters though, so I can’t imagine that it will).
YOU’RE the reason movies suck today.
Love,
Former Movie Lover
Legendary has produced PACIFIC RIM and they’ve announced a sequel in the works.
Now they have GODZILLA?
seems like they’re going to overkill the audience with these very similar giant monster movies.
I guess they expect the Asian markets to pick up the B.O. gap.
Frank Darabont is awesome. Great choice for this!
This is typical of Tull he takes advantage of people and uses them. Dan and Roy will get credited as executive producers and Tull will end up paying their legal fees.
You mean the same producers responsible for the last Terminator reboot may no longer be involved? Hallelujah!
What damn Terminator reboot?
If they’re shooting in March and the script is coming along and Gareth Edwards is still directing, the producer thing kinda seems like a non-issue. Doesn’t really seem like they’ve been involved.
This comment makes absolutely no sense.
How does that information tell you if the producers have or have not been involved?
Legendary is a solid stand-up outfit. The business I’ve experienced there has been very fair. There must be more to this than meets the eye(?)
What they Should do is hire Frank as the director as well as a writer. This will give the film enormous cred with the fan base as well as the general movie going public. Putting a film as iconic as this with a young director is a big mistake. Well see I guess…
Yes, God forbid Hollywood gives someone young a chance… Let’s never try to renew ourselves.
“Veered in the genre territory”? lol. Darabont’s forte is horror and scifi.
But his best known film is still The Shawshank Redemption.
I thought David Goyer wrote the original script, not Borenstein.
Goyer did the script outline, but not the actual script.
Legendary makes amazing films, can’t wait to see this!
Another pointless remake. Writers, directors and producers have all become disposable. It’s all about the brand now, baby.
Tull, make Paradise Lost&The Great Wall or get out of the biz. Both projects had enormous potential.
Nice try, Frank Darabont, but I will not be going any where near another stank Godzilla movie, or King Kong for that matter.
Dan Lin is a stand-up guy.
I concur. The best.
what a scumbag move by Legendary.
Didn’t Brian Rogers bring Legendary the rights? Dan and Roy just got put on the movie – with a grand stroke of luck I might add – by WB. I am tired of producers (Dan and Roy in this case) who have not been involved at all playing up to their greedy stereotypes by demanding a back end, and without ever having done any work on the project.
Wait until the lawsuit goes to trial and see all the information that will be brought to light. If you can, go to every day of the trial and then you’ll see what Legendary is doing. Legendary has no chance in this lawsuit.
I sure hope this guy and the team behind him take note of the faluire of the last picture i 98
all my buddies who watched that crud all said one thing ” if it had been the classic guy in a suit monster it would have been great”
sony blew millions on a CG monster when a guy in a rubber suit would have done it will always make me laugh!!!!!!!
If Mary is replacing Dan and Roy they now have a winnable lawsuit especially if they went to Toho to get the rights and took Godzilla to Legendary. I like Mary and I’m happy for her but what Legendary is doing is wrong. It will depend on the precise wording of their contract as to how much money they end up getting.
Mary Parent is the worst. Came into MGM, earned millions to make 7 shitty films and Cabin In The Woods, and left the place much worse off than when she arrived. Good luck, Godzilla.
Mary Parent is the perfect person for this. She knows how to get things done. Smart move, can’t wait for the film.
Cabin In The Woods is a good film. On many top ten lists this year.
s
It said “…7 shitty films AND Cabin In The Woods”.
HOT TUB TIME MACHINE was not shitty… it was, in fact, amazing.
Only because of the name.
To be honest, there wasn’t much Mary Parent could do while she was at MGM. Her hiring was definitely exciting, and she did put together some projects that sounded promising, but MGM/UA had been abused for so long that I doubt anyone could have come in and saved it from bankruptcy. Things seem to be going ok for the moment over at MGM, but, as I’ve always felt, its recent problems are still a direct result of the abuse and mishandling its received from its previous owners, primary Ted Turner and Kirk Kerkorian.
Given a bit more time, and more financial resources, I still think Parent could have done quite well for MGM, but given the circumstances, she did the best she could with what she had.
I had a $100m film with her when Mary was at MGM, and frankly, I am not a big-time producer, and she kept me on as the sole producer. Even though the studio was bankrupt, she did try to push it through quickly and really helped to put a director and stars on board. In my book, that’s some stand-up shit, in a business that is bereft of stand-up people…
Though a BS move on Legendary’s part…with Mary Parent coming on board (if true) is GREAT.
To say that TT takes advantage of people is ridiculous, he’s a business savy man and at the end of the day this is what it comes down to BUSINESS, it’s nothing personal. He is exercising the play or pay clause and you can’t blame him for it. He’s not in the business of being nice, he’s in the business of making great films and more importantly money. You don’t agree with him, start your own production company, empower the producers instead of the directors, obtain the rights to films he would want and put him out of business…. Good luck with that.
The fact that Legendary has had hit after hit is not a cooincidence. Bringing Mary Parent on board is a great move, she’s a no nonsense producer who will bring Gareth Edwards down to earth if he feels the need to veer away from the original path.
Well if you really did work for her you would of probably known she was handcuffed by the studio and couldn’t make the films she really wanted to make bc the bozos before her ran it to the ground, the fact that the studio had any sort of life line while she was in power was a testament to her. She could of left early and still been paid but instead she stayed with the team she had brought on board an already sinking ship. The fact that you would talk shit about someone who gave you a chance shows you’re a rat of the lowest kind, have fun living in the gutter you ballwasher. There is nobody around who could have pulled MGM out of the mess that Mary had inherited, the only reason they are doing well now is not bc of Jonathan Glickman but instead the money that Spyglass had to put in. Talk shit about MP all you want but the fact of the matter is YOU worked for HER and she will never have to work for you. Life’s a bitch ain’t it? I’m assuming you’re still unemployed and blame her for your situation. GFY
I hope Gareth Edwards’ ego can withstand all this excitement. Everyone wants to work on his movie.
I don’t think everyone want to work on the film, but hopes to get a cut (whether they work on it or not) of what could be a profitable film franchise.
Ok, let’s take it easy on Mary Parent. Mary is clearly a star. Anyone who knows anything about bankruptcy proceedings knows the limitations of credit lines. The board likely brought her in to do exactly what she was doing until they could line up new buyers/sources of financing. Sure, if The Hobbit got green lit or if Bond was made with MGM capital, there would have been an influx of revenue but there was simply no financing in place during the toughest credit crunch in recent history.
Shortly after leaving her 3rd studio chief role (you don’t get 3 if you don’t know what you’re doing) she landed a Guillermo Del Toro project then a Darren Aronofsky project. These are real filmmakers who don’t work with shitty people. Legendary isn’t hiring her because she’s bad at this.
So you’re fired, so what? Move on.
So, they hired Parent to run MGM as a full-fledged studio just to fill time?
