The Hollywood cultural and historic landmark opened in 1927 by Sid Grauman will now be called TCL Chinese Theatre under the 10-year, $5 million deal with Chinese TV firm TCL Group. As part of the agreement, TCL will help fund improvements to the property and has agreed to sponsor a national and international marketing campaign to promote Hollywood and the iconic theater, according to the LA Times. “This is one of the landmarks of North America,” said Hao Yi, vice president of TCL Group. “It can be a bridge to link the cultures of China and North America.” The deal gives TCL, the world’s fourth-largest manufacturer of flat-panel TVs, an opportunity to gain a foothold in the U.S. This isn’t the first name change for the venerable theater. Ted Mann bought the cinema house in 1973 and for nearly 30 years it was called Mann’s Chinese Theatre. Warner and Viacom acquired the theater after the Mann chain filed for bankruptcy. Chinese Theatre, LLC acquired The Chinese Theatre and the Chinese 6 Theatres from Mann Theatres on May 27, 2011.

TCL Chinese Theatre
Well, I’m certainly glad the new name lends an air of tradition and elegance to this once-glorious Hollywood landmark.
Wonder how many people will think it’s now named after the cable channel that gave us Honey-Boo-Boo?
WGAmember – I think you went dyslexic… It’s TCL, not TLC.
Tdog- I think WGAmember knows that. It’s the Honey Boo Boo viewers we’re not so sure about…
I work across the street. Grauman’s desperately needs TLC. Hopefully they’ll be able to afford
to fix up the theatre without removing ANY of the original. Having to sell the name is bittersweet,
but if it means improving the place we should be happy about it.
If an American company went into China and tried to rename a historical landmark, there would be a riot.
Great job on selling out guys. Hope you made lots of cash.
Why not just call it the Chinese Theater now?
This is the dumbest ish ever and a sacrilege to Syd’s legacy.
relax xenophobes – TCL didn’t buy the theater – they just bought the use of the right to name the theater. And in 5 years it might be another name – like, “Joe’s Pagoda Looking Theater”. it’s a win-win deal.
Ted Mann changed the name from Graumans to “Mann’s Graumans Chinese Theater.” Surely a dumber name. Paramount and Warner restored the courtyard and overhauled the interior to meet code but also restore original fabrics. They changed the name back to Graumans Chinese Theater. It was sold to Eli Samaha who has now sold the name to TCL, but retains ownership. A bigger concern should be Samaha’s practice of SELLING the footprint/signing ceremonies where Ted Mann and Par/Warner at least tried to maintain the integrity of the “honor” associated with the footprint ceremonies.
It was reported that part of this deal includes foreigners paying to spruce up the theatre. It needs it.
For once money is coming INTO the US, not out. I’ll be happier if the theatre is fixed up. The main theatre should be as nice as the Arclight- then maybe people that live in LA would actually go to the
theatre.
What’d people expect. We’ve got a sign up for everyone in the world to see, “USA – For Sale.” And… “No money down, come all ye from China – and other countries. Plop down a kid and get USA citizenship & milk it dry.” Then take it over.
xenophobia much?
