SUNDAY 3:30 AM, 4TH UPDATE: Saturday’s box office was big after Friday’s business slowed when R-rated newcomers dominated North American movie theaters. The turnaround put this weekend around $100M for all moviegoing but that’s still -15% from last year. “Tough sledding for the new films this week – and next week won’t get any easier with the Super Bowl,” one studio exec warned me. First up: fairytale characters who are heavily armed. Not exactly PC for the serious gun control discussion begun in this nation over recent violence in real life and entertainment. Paramount‘s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D co-financed with MGM playing on 3,372 theaters opened to $5.9M Friday then went up +40% to $8.4M Saturday.
That still makes for a disappointing $18M for the weekend, especially with the 3D premium. On 2,000 screens for its midnight opening, this mashed mash-up masquerading as an action comedy made $500K in midnight grosses, less even than Warner Bros’ recent disappointing Gangster Squad. Even though Hansel & Gretel will be #1 this weekend, Paramount has another underperformer. The R-rated pic only had one semi-star, machinegun-toting Jeremy Renner. Good thing Paramount claims it only cost $50M (though sources say budget was $83M). Audiences gave it a ‘B’ CinemaScore which won’t hurt or help its prospects. Exit polls showed filmgoers were 55% male with 57% over 25.
This reimagined dark twist on the classic Grimm tale kept moving its release date – never a good sign – from March 2nd, 2012, to January 11th, to now. “This should really set up the international,” a studio exec gave me as an excuse back then. ”Jeremy Renner’s international profile should be in great shape after being in Mission: Impossible 4, then The Avengers, then The Bourne Legacy.” Nope. Renner’s Bourne grossed only so-so: he just can’t carry a movie solo. It didn’t help that guns are falling out of favor. So I was surprised that Paramount didn’t change the TV ads to delete that shoot-em-up nonsense and instead show more comedy. Then again, this new film picks up the fairy tale 15 years after Hansel and Gretel’s evil encounter at the gingerbread house. They’ve become bounty hunters tracking and killing wicked witches. Tommy Wirkola directed and co-wrote the script with Dante Harper. Will Ferrell’s and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Prods produced.
Major studios are great marketers but only if they have the goods. To announce the IMAX release, Paramount debuted pic on MGM’s Skyfall IMAX screens – but without generating any buzz. The studio also negotiated coverage of an exclusive custom content piece with talent intros that launched at all Regal theatres on January 18th with Django Unchained, Broken City, and The Last Stand. Problem is, filmgoers only turned out for Quentin Tarantino’s pic. On opening night, the first 100 Hansel And Gretel fans at all Cinemark XD theatres across the country received a free movie shirt, while the first 60,000 Regal IMAX 3D audience members received a collector’s print of exclusive movie art. Kinda late for that. Media-wise, Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton did the usual press junket and talk show circuit plus Hispanic and African-American targets. Street teams visited nearly 50 high profile sporting events covering the NBA, NFL, NGL and College Football. New Years Day featured male-targeted cable marathons. H&G also had presence three weeks in a row in NFL playoff games. There was partnering with MTV. The online campaign focused on movie’s red band trailer. A custom Hansel & Gretel Play & Win sweepstakes on Xbox aligned with the rabid Halo 4 audience. And still pic’s grossed domestically underwhelmed.
But international prospects look good after Russia opened to huge $8.6M. Latin America and Southeast Asia are debuting after a strong lead by Brazil and Mexico. These markets represent 30% of the international box office.
#2 is last week’s PG-13 suspense thriller topper Mama from Universal in 2,682 theaters. Developed and presented by Guillermo Del Toro and starring Zero Dark Thirty‘s Best Actress Oscar likely Jessica Chastain as a brunette, pic had a second Friday of $3.8M and $6.2M Saturday for a weekend of $13.2M (-54%) for an expected cume through Sunday of $49M.
#3 is The Weinstein Company’s R-rated Oscar-buzzed Silver Linings Playbook in 2,641 theaters with a $2.3M Friday and $4.3 Saturday for a $9.3M weekend and $68.8M cume through Sunday. “Notice that Silver Linings is going to beat Zero Dark Thirty this weekend which is pretty impressive in my book,” a Weinstein exec gushed to me. “It is the best hold of the top films by far and that is after 11 weeks!”
#4 is another R-rated Oscar-touted pic. Zero Dark Thirty financed by Annapurna Pictures and distributed by Sony Pictures. Playing in 2,929 theaters, it made $2.3M Friday and $4.3M Saturday for a $9M weekend and cume of $69.1M through Sunday.
#5 is FilmDistrict’s barely registering R-rated crime drama Parker despite a ‘B+’ CinemaScore which could help word of mouth. It was directed by Taylor Hackford and stars Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez who only is in shadow on the main one-sheet and whose film career truly is DOA. in 2,224 theaters. Parker opened to $2.1M Friday and +40% for $3.1M Saturday for a lousy weekend of $7.2M. FilmDistrict licensed the U.S. distribution rights and knew pic would only gross in the single digits. Film had been tracking strongest with males ages 17-34 so primary media focused heavily on channels and programming tailored to men as well as actions fans and Hispanics. Based on the series of bestselling novels by Donald E. Westlake, Parker was financed by Sierra/Affinity, Incentive Filmed Entertainment, and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Doubtful whether future films based on the franchise will be made given this outcome. Current Entertainment’s Steven Chasman produced along with Sidney Kimmel, Les Alexander and Jonathan Mitchell via their Alexander/Mitchell banner, and Taylor Hackford.
Falling from #6 to #7 is Relativity’s $6M R-rated ensemble comedy Movie 43 that earned a dreaded ‘D’ CinemaScore from audiences to hurt word of mouth. Playing in 2,023 theaters, its gimmick is 12 directors, 30 name actors, and 18 writers working on different shorts stitched together. I’m already hearing a lot of them regret taking part. Movie 43 debuted at $1.8M Friday and +10% to $2M Saturday for a weekend of $4.0M. That’s only half what Relativity predicted. “If you are going to take a creative risk, what better way to do it than on a $6M budget with the opportunity to work with a large pool of writers, directors and actors including Peter Farrelly and Charles Wessler – two comedic geniuses.” Actors worked for scale and the production moved to accommodate schedules. This explains why the film was shot over 3 years. Seriously, how much longer is Relativity going to keep claiming its risk is mitigated by international pre-sales, outputs and Netflix before P&A spend? Meanwhile Ryan Kavanaugh, listed as a producer, may well be in the Witness Protection Program because he’s mercifully stopped publicizing himself. With Alliance Films distributing in Canada, Relativity owns worldwide rights and Lionsgate International handled international sales and distribution. Movie 43 has supposedly taken in $10M overseas.

It’s a “guilty pleasure” weekend at the movies. Can’t wait. Ready for some layer cake.
Gimme a break. It’s crap, and has been crap.
Everyone’s waiting for Bruce Willis to kick this mother off.
Die Hard Forever, baby!
I was planning to skip this installment like I did Die Hard 4, until I saw that it’s going to be rated R. If the Die Hard franchise goes back to being R rated, then I’m willing to give it another chance.
…Unless the next DIE HARD underperforms, in which case everyone will be on here claiming the franchise is over and Bruce Willis is no longer a star.
Box Office totals for MOVIE 43
is a bigger laugh than anything in this lame movie
we came so close to walking out..what a waste.
That would be great for Hansel and Gretel if it opens around 25m.
yes it really is!
They made a movie about HANSEL and GRETEL being badasses. HANSEL. GRETEL. Have the studio and the makers of this film met some actual PEOPLE outside of Hollywood? What’s next on the action movie slate– GEORGIE PORGIE? LITTLE JACK HORNER? YANKEE DOODLE? THREE LITTLE PIGS?
Friggin’ HANSEL. Even the name is ridiculous for an action hero. You know you’re in trouble when the studio is touting how cheap the movie was to minimize the damage, even though they spent millions in marketing this turd that appeals to, well, no one.
Georgie Porgie pudding and pie. Kissed the terrorists and made them die.
Yes Hollywood studios are ridiculous. There’s a trailer out now for “Jack the Giant Slayer,” Yes you heard that right. A “badass” version of Jack and the Beanstalk. I wouldn’t doubt that The Three Little Pigs are next. (sigh) What happened to creativity in Hollywood?
I was just about to mention “Jack the Giant Slayer”. Hollywood is trying to do the action version of all Mother Goose stories or Grimm tales. Which sounds like a good idea. Until… well until you make “Jack the Giant Slayer”.
Remember Owen Wilson’s character, an airhead model called “Hansel,” from Zoolander? Friggin’ hilarious. Goes to show the baggage associated with that name.
This movie looks so bad. I roll my eyes EVERY time the trailer comes on TV.
I hate to break it to you, but Jennifer Lopez’s film career was dead the second “Action” was called for the first time on the first day of filming for Gigli.
Poor Martin Brest.
yet here she is continuing to make movies a decade later. someone should notify her about her film career being dead!
And how many of them are hits?!
Yeah, that’s what I thought, strawman lover.
it’s sad you people are complaining and she is making millions.
Monster-in-Law… though I dont know if that counts since its was more considered Jane Fonda’s comeback.
A comeback, huh? What’s Jane done since then? Right right, nothing.
NervisRex: since then Jane has starred in PEACE, LOVE AND MISUNDERSTANDING and GEORGIA RULE.
You don’t seem to know much about anything.
NervisRex is a fanboy. Not industry and it shows.
She’s also a regular on Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed HBO series “The Newsroom.”
Oops! Forgot to mention she also spent several months on Broadway starring in 33 VARIATIONS, then did it in Los Angeles a year later.
How did Jennifer Lopez ever get famous in the first place?
She can sing and she’s hot. But who ever told her she’s got acting talent should be fired.
She can sing and she’s hot(re:booty). But whoever told she has acting talent should not be in the business at all.
Um, she can’t sing…not even in comparison to Rihanna.
And yet they keep giving her roles.
Attention Hollywood. JL can’t open a film, and never will. She’s Box Office poison. Why, because she’s absolutely no fun to watch on screen. She’ snot a star. Never was.
Rant over, but I gotta say. All I have to do is see her name, and that is a film I will never see.
Is was just 24 months ago that Jason Stathom’s Mechanic opened over $11 million, he’s still got it, but the marketing was just too generic on Parker.
Parker is actually doing pretty well, considering Lopez is in it …
Hahahaha
That’s not funny, nor is it accurate. Her movies usually open decent (at least they used to). But hey at least it opening better than Statham’s previous film Safe.
Wow. Truly amazing how much venom needs releasing because J.Lopez has the nerve to appear in a movie. “Not even on the poster…” and yet she gets all the blame for a low open. No one bothers to mention that Jason Statham is in this. Or that Taylor Hackford directed it — Proof of Life was more than 10 years ago. The trailer for this was awful and I like this genre. The title is useless. So yeah, go give J.Lo a beat down you stupid little boys. She’s working and you aren’t. That’s reason enough.
You need to look a little closer at the poster.
Parker was really pretty inventive. Lopez rocks this film! The show I went to was nearly empty though. It’s much more entertaining and surprising than you might gather from it’s marketing. Just wasn’t on the radar where I live.
I did not spend my hard earned money on Parker because JLo is in it.
It’s a toss up which is worse, ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘Parker’ or ‘Movie 43′. None of them even comes close to being the kind of bad that’s good fun, either. ‘Gangster Squad’ will do nicely on international, as will Ah-nuld’s ‘Last Stand’. But those first three, you know when you’ve taken a dump and the thing just won’t flush away no matter how many time you try? They’re like that.
Perfect analogy.
I think it is time for Statham’s movies to go straight to DVD only. He cannot open a movie at all.
Yeah. Why is he still in wide release. I don’t even watch trailers for his movies. They all look the same.
And Jennifer Lopez… This is how her movie career ended… Playing girlfriend in Jason Statham B-movie.
Some of them actually have lately.
Not counting The Expendables, Statham has really been struggling to open a movie for a while. Killer Elite, Mechanic, Safe, Crank: High Voltage and now Parker are all domestic disappointments in terms of opening weekends and gross. Sure his movies do well overseas, but at this point, who wants to shell out any p & a money if his movies aren’t going to make it back here. Statham would be a lot more profitable in the U.S. if he joined JCVD in the straight to DVD market.
A tale of two horror movies. Paramount’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (12% Rotten Tomatoes) versus Paramount’s The Loved Ones (98% Rotten Tomatoes). Guess which one got dumped straight to DVD?
Unfortunately, justice and entertainment rarely mix.
Guess which one stars an Oscar nominee? Guess which one has the bigger budget to recoup? Guess which one has a familiar story to market? Guess which one Paramount has actual stock in and not just US distribution rights? Guess which one was produced by Will Ferrell?
This is like the third straight year of late January trash from Sony opening on imax. Yes I know it’s January and a slow time of the year, but there’s got to be something better than Hansel or Grettel or Green Hornet.
How about re-releasing older movies on imax. Gladiator? Blade Runner? Alien, Aliens? Hell I’d have thrown the original Die Hard on the imax screen for 2 weeks.
Next year’s the 25th anniversary of the The Abyss. Just throwing it out there for you.
There’s also a problem in late late summer. Don’t think the 300 sequel will still be drawing crowds in late August. I say release Attack of the Clones late August and give Revenge of the Sith in mid-September.
The problem with two-week re-releases is (likely justified) studio reluctance to invest in such a limited window. Limited engagements are almost incompatible with this saturated market, in which heavy advertising is all but required. Without any marketing campaign, I doubt if “Blade Runner” could top “Indiana Jones”, which only took in $3m last fall, sans promotions.
Here’s my idea: What if the studios re-release little-seen movies without telling the masses they’re watching re-releases? Being John Malkovich, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Ed Wood, Menace II Society? Not too shabby, huh?
That’s an awesome idea!
…if awesome were defined as “sucks royally”.
wow, january really is a dumping ground for the US isn’t it? Over here in australia all the big oscar films all get released in one big rush in december, january and february.
Meh, they all got released in November and December here in the U.S., I don’t think I saw single one as I typically hate Oscar/movies made to win awards.
I’ve seen all the talked about Oscar movies. Argo was solid…Django was really good…Lincoln was grand, but pedestrian.
These Oscar movies by and large suck. Either, I’m getting out of the business because these filmakers are expert at blowing smoke up peoples asses, when their movies really suck, or winning an Oscar has become so much easier for me/anybody.
Is Renner still a “semi-star” after opening a knock-off Bourne movie, a 4th M:I and being a part of Avengers?
And if this actually earns $20M…that’s pretty impressive.
He’s a “semi-star” because no one particularly loves him, but he keeps showing up in well-liked franchises.
When was the last time Brad Pitt opened at 20 million or more? Tom Cruise? If Jeremy Renner can sell the turd that is Hansel and Gretel I’m ready to call him a star
I agree We need to give Renner a break He made the film years back before his Bourne and MI outing He was trying to get a dopey bloated 3D film to land so he can do his smaller more personal films The guy’s a great actor. Of course Gretal is Meh This guy will be around for a long time doing some great work ps Have you see some of the films John Cassavettes acted in during his directorial tenure?
Do you really think that it is him that sells the film or is it the gore, the blood, the weapons, the non-sensical script, etc.? At least this will serve to end the discussions on lousy movies doing well internationally because ‘they are less discerning than we are’.
I like him.. my family all really like him. He was really good in the town, and I thought he was charismatic enough to pull of his role in the new Bourne flick.
Plus all my female friends, chose him over the other avengers in terms of looks to gab over when the movie finished.
Plus $20 Mil opening is pretty fantastic for a movie with such negative press.
- Because he was 5-th wheel in Avengers, supporting character. No one really cared about him. Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson were in it too. You will call them box-office stars now?
- In Mission he was supporting character next to Ethan Hunt. Nobody cared about him.
- Bourne was about franchise. People still go to those kind of things fore some reason. If they would take any mention of Bourne from that movie then it would fail.
He is like Orlando Bloom who was lucky to get supporting role in LOTR, then Troy, then Pirats. And became star. Even got lead role in Kingdom of Heaven. And then all his solo movies basically failed. And when Pirats ended – so did Orlando’s career.
- Hansel & Gretel ss actually Renners fist big movie as lead actor. It will get some 17-18 millions.
I like Jeremy Renner. In Hurt Locker and Town. He was good. But he was awful in MI, Avengers and Bourne. He always have this only one look: “I’m 80 years old man. I’m so tired from life. I’m so depressed and unhappy…”.
Well it’s now $17 million for the weekend and fading it seems.
As for Renner, pretty sure few people showed up to MI4 and THE AVENGERS simply because he was a part of the SUPPORTING cast in them. As for Bourne, the film did decently, but even there, he’s being brought in as part of a pre-established brand.
I’ll be more impressed when he stars in, and succeeds in, something that’s not a preordained box-office hit. Hansel & Gretel obviously isn’t going to be one of those cases.
This is really a case of Renner, being in position to become a star and making a bad choice. He’d done the good supporting roles, and as such cued up to have a shot at leading one. It’s one of those moments when the smart actor holds out for a great role, and then the path of his career is set.
Huge misstep on his and his team’s part. He’ll probably get another chance, but he needs to choose more carefully next time.
This was crap. Not his fault. But he, or someone on his team, should know crap when they see it and stay away.
Taylor Hackford directed Parker? What? What’s he doing there – - he’s made some great films.
Lopez? Really? C’mon Taylor…..
Don’t judge PARKER until you see it. It’s a smart, exciting thriller being mis-sold as just another Statham slugfest.
Interestingly enough on Feb 8th for 6 days only Paramount is rerelasing Top Gun remastered in IMAX 3D. Then of course the latest Die Hard opens on Valentines Day. For my money I’m checking out Parker that got a solid review locally.
Critics just didn’t get hansel & gretel. Unlike abe lincoln vampire hunter hansel & gretel witch hunters lived up to the lunacy of its name. Sure fire cult classic.
Don’t forget my moofie The Last Stand my moofies always do better the 2nd weekend than they do the 1st weekend. See The Last Stand! And remember, I’ll be back, in two more moofies this year. The Tomb and Ten. People love me they can’t get enough of me and my Austrian accent. I am The Governator and soon I vill be The Terminator again too.
Lopez has way too much negative baggage.
She was never a good actress, but now when she appears on screen people think “See you next Tuesday” — except they are lying. They NEVER want to see her again.
She is so smug, entitled and annoying. She really needs to just go away.
You obviously haven’t seen PARKER. She is anything but the qualities you mention here. As a matter of fact her performance has gotten great reviews from top critics. Have an opinion, but don’t be ignorant.
I was, quite clearly, talking about the baggage she brings *to* a role, not the role.
But, in any event, she has not been getting good reviews in the real world . . .
“Out of Sight” was pretty darn good in my book. She and Clooney had ton’s of chemistry.
That was 15 years ago…
Actually Lopez was good in one movie “Out of Sight.” There was that chemistry between her and Clooney, but she never reached that level again. Sad.
I have to agree with your sentiment on J Lo. Her public persona has really gotten in the way of believing her as a character. She carries a vibe of self-entitlement that is hard to separate when watching her on screen.
Statham is Statham in every single movie. If you like him you’ll go. If you don’t you won’t.
“Hunters” is an action comedy???
I saw Parker and it was entertaining. Lopez was not as bad as everyone always tells me she is. I didn’t watch American Idol, though. Will try to check out the Hansel and Gretel movie sometime soon.
When your not on the poster it’s your agency’s fault for not following up on the contract. J-Lo may want to look into better management, or she may as well start eating and sign up for the next Hallmak Hall of Fame weepie. Maybe she’ll be the next Marky Post.
I am clearly in the minority. Despite that fact that I’m quite certain I wouldn’t like Jennifer Lopez if we were sitting across the table from each other at a coffee bar, I love watching her in movies. She has something undeniable and watchable. She’s great. Granted, I haven’t seen even one episode or American Idol, ever, so seeing her on that might change my mind. In the meantime, I think she’s great.
Jennifer Lopez is very identifiable on the “Parker” poster. Who cares whether her name is there. The fine print on those posters is almost impossible to read anyway.
Parker is horrible! Cheesy generic plot line and bad acting. Im surprised this film didn’t go straight to DVD. Whoever thought statham and J-lo would make a good match on screen should seriously consider retirement.
i really liked this movie when it was PAYBACK with MEL GIBSON. in fact just watched it on SPIKE TV this afternoon.
Y’know, they have these amazing new things called “books.” If you ever tried cracking one open, you might know that PAYBACK and PARKER are based on two of a series of novels written by the same author and featuring the same character. It’s like saying, “I liked GOLDFINGER when it was called DR. NO.”
News to me H&G is a comedy. You’d never know it by the tv trailer.
Hey, leave Marky Post out of it! Why is she taking a hit? Love her!
