After a month of last-minute haggling between CBS and 20th Century Fox TV over deal points, the network and studio have sealed an agreement for a ninth season of How I Met Your Mother. It will be the veteran comedy’s last season, and the show will finally reveal the identity of the mother. I hear it will be for 24 episodes. All series regulars — Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan — are back, as are creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. To show the cast their commitment to the show, Bays and Thomas were first to close a one-year show deal. Then came the dramatic actor negotiations as chronicled in Nikki Finke’s story that broke the news about HIMYM‘s pending renewal. The prospects of a ninth season appeared all but dead after Segel had held firmly to his decision to leave until an eleventh-hour turnaround. I hear Segel finally changed his mind after reviewing detailed records of the relatively light workload the hybrid series requires for a fat paycheck while also allowing busy actors like him to also pursue a feature career.
“Through eight years, How I Met Your Mother has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catch-phrases,” said CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler. Added 20th TV chairman Dana Walden, “Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are masterful and hilarious storytellers, and we have no doubt that they will guide one of the greatest comedies of the last decade to a gratifying conclusion when they finally reveal the identity of the mother.”

This show went on for a few years longer than it should have & no big reveal.Could they have possibly dragged this out even longer?!?! Any truth to the rumor the show will be renamed “How I Milked This Program For Every Cent It’s Worth” for its’ final season?!
Had it not been stretched so far, How would you have heard about the awesome stories of Barney Stinson ?
You’re a hater. It’s a good show.
JS and NPH are the only reasons to watch this shark-jumper of a show; the other three became little more than nuisances after Season 1.
Walden’s hyperbole is funnier than most HIYM episodes. It needs to end.
So true, Not Funny, but one has to keep in perspective this kind of hyperbole (and gratuitous compliments) got Walden into the co-chairmanship at 20th Century Fox Television. Amazing rise for this previously middling publicist-turned-network co-chair — I’ll leave it at that (no need to get into the uglier, gritty details of her push to the top — too much other human collateral damage in that path).
Added 20th TV chairman Dana Walden, “Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are masterful and hilarious storytellers, and we have no doubt that they will guide one of the greatest comedies of the last decade to a gratifying conclusion when they finally reveal the identity of the mother.”
….as for guiding a new show, oh yeah and we reduced the episode order of Goodwin Games…..our bad!
I am getting sick and tired of all the griping about not knowing who the mother is. The show is HIMYM, not how I met, wooed, and ultimately married your mother.
The reason that lots of people whine about this is because most shows and films today are very predictable. And I have discovered that lots of hardcore TV fans (like me) or industry insiders (definitely not me) like to feel superior by predicting where shows will go. And when they can’t make those predictions they throw rocks at the show they can’t predict.
HIMYM has spent 7 years as a show that starts a highly rated night, which is no mean feat. It does so at 8, despite having material much more suited for 9, which has forced them to be much more tame than the writers would have desired. It has kept dozens, if not hundreds, of people employed for 9 years in a very difficult tv landscape. Everyone involved has made a ton of money. It has been recognized for the highest awards in its medium, though not nearly as many as it should have received. All the while being consistently pretty good and entertaining. Have there been missteps? Sure. What show hasn’t had those? At least it is because they are trying new things, rather than riding a formula into the ground.
Awesome news!… wait for it… wait for it… said no one.
Bring back Patrice!
Nobody asked you, Patrice!!!
Nice! Well played!
Patrice is the mother.
…
I’m taking the rest of the afternoon off.
It’s going to be legend….wait for it… wait for it…keep-waiting-cause-this-show-has-dragged-on-for-far-too-long…DARY.
Great, so there’s no reason to continue watching until May of 2014.
Also, I saw a meme online of the kids on the couch that said ‘Kids…The real truth of the matter is, you’re adopted and I’m a chronic liar’
I’ll start not watching anymore right away.
Didn’t the creators say that they were writing this season as if it were the last? I know they’ve been milking the show for a longtime now so I shouldn’t be surprised, but why can’t they just reveal the mother at the end of this season and then use the next season to show us how they fall in love/pop the question? I guess that would be moving the plot along too much.
Wow, the intense “water-cooler” buzz that Ms. Tassler describes of “HIMYM” day-after episodes has me holding my breath through next season to find out who will be the mother of Radnor’s character’s kids — maybe they should really generate buzz by making it Casey Anthony for the BIG FINALE?! Talk about an unforgettable, highly-rated, memorably sick twist!
Okay, ignore a joke in poor taste, but, come on, “HIMYM” was long-in-the-tooth and essentially “jumped the shark” a few seasons ago — all except Neil Patrick Harris’ brilliant Barney! That dude deserves another sitcom just built around his talents!
Lame comments, horrible attempts at humor. With minds like this who needs needlepoint.
Smart and funny show. Its a sit-com.
I’m thrilled to hear it! I’ve been watching for years and will admit that it had a few slumps but last season and so far this season have been better than ever. For me, I honestly don’t even care about Ted and the mother – Ted drives me nuts. The rest of the cast is amazing and funny and I’m glad to get one more year – and some closure.
“Segel finally changed his mind after reviewing detailed records of the relatively light workload the hybrid series requires for a fat paycheck while also allowing busy actors like him to also pursue a feature career.”
That is the most ridiculous thing ever. Segel is that stupid? Did he not already realize how easy his job is and how over-paid he is? He really had to review detailed records? Is he that dense?
I believe at this point, the only actress who could be the “Mother” and have it generate some fan buzz is Sarah Michelle Gellar. Having “Buffy” back with “Willow” would get a lot of the fan sites talking. The show needs to get back to people being excited about it rather than “seriously, is this still on and still no mom?”
If not? And they want to go with someone who is still somewhat unknown, Krysten Ritter is unemployed now and she’s really funny.
Either way, I hope they reveal the Mom this season at least.
Love the Gellar idea or maybe even the actress who played her sister? How about the actress who played Allyson’s lover in the final seasons?
Gellar — great idea!
Hey, it’s the title of the show. It’s a lot more than just who is the mother. I’m vested in all the characters. So easy to snark in a show you don’t watch anymore.
Finally, a sane person commenting. I still like this show. I really don’t get why everyone says Ted is such a jerk. I think he is a relatable character, and don’t see why everyone raves about NPH. Sure Barney was hysterical early on, but he got less funny when he stopped being a complete jerk.
Can the writers and producers please reveal the mother ahead of the final episode???!! It is beyond frustrating watching this show where it’s no longer twists and turns but ways to prolong the series where I’m sure it has some rich storyline of how he did meet the mother.
It’s a comedy who cares… Every show milks it for what it’s worth, same with movies it’s a business. Grow up.
I’m hoping that the final season is not a year of Barney and Robin planning their wedding leading to Ted finally meeting the mom at the wedding itself.
I love this show but if they expected it to last this long they should have called it something else. I hope they use an unknown actress for the mother, I may want to fall in love with her too
“..said CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler… and 20th TV chairman Dana Walden” or, more accurately, said their PR staff that just finished the “How to write excruciatingly Obvious Press Release Quotes” webinar.
I bet the Log Lady knows who the mother is.
Professor Falken
Shouldn’t Neil Patrick Harris decide that Barney is really gay? That would be an ironic twist that makes sense and is truthful to the actor who plays Barney. Let NPH determine who Barney ends up with. Barney should suddenly realize that all his womanizing has been an overt aggressive denial of his true sexuality. He should become a manizer.
“Hybrid series”? Does that mean it runs on electricity? Cause it ran out of gas years ago…
I heard the mother actually ends up being a man, the kids are adopted and Barney gets the clap.
Nope. Her name is Tracey, it has to be. In the first thanksgiving episode when Barney gets kicked out of the volunteer thing and takes Ted to the Lusty Leopard and he meets that stripper, she says, “I’m amber” he replies, “I’m Ted” then she replies, “actually my name is Tracey” and that when he jokes with the kids, “and that’s how met your mother” and the kids flip out. So obviously her name is Tracey or he wouldn’t have been able to trick the kids!
That sound you heard…. Your mind being blown…
hahahaha ive see every episode literally several times over and yet that still did blow my mind
