The third season premiere episodes of Portlandia were up solidly over last year. Friday’s airing on IFC garnered a total audience of 1.1 million. That’s a 30% rise over the Oregon-based Peabody-winning comedy series’ January 6, 2012 season two debut. Portlandia returned at 10 PM on January 4 with back-to-back episodes. The 10 PM and 10:30 PM shows combined pulled in 751,000 viewers among Adults 18-49. “The show’s outstanding performance underscores IFC’s successful brand strategy and growing appeal for the distinct point of view our original alternative comedies provide,” said Jennifer Caserta, IFC’s president & general manager in a statement on Wednesday. Starring Saturday Night Live’s Fred Armisen and Wild Flag guitarist Carrie Brownstein, Portlandia first debuted on January 11, 2011.

I watched for the first time to see what all the hype was about and was stunned how unfunny the show was.
Good for them, although the two episodes were awful to mediocre.
It’s interesting how they can spin these numbers. They’ve combined figures and merged them, but if you break it down this would be a disastrously low rated show on any other cable channel. Definitely agree about the mediocrity.
Taking back MTV? Zuchinni Milk? Converting people in Seattle to move to Portland? Viewers Like You
Maybe it’s not as funny as The Jonas Brothers, Larry the Cable Guy and Guy Fiere’s Donkeysauce.
Here’s the deal – the numbers are roughly 370,000 per half hour. That’s how they get to 750,000. The 1.1 Million – is everyone outside of the 18 – 49 (everyone below 18 and above 49), or 360,000 viewers. BTW, the show was very boring, not funny.
IFC has to trumpet something as they’re always on the verge of being dropped by cable providers. They barely register a blip whenever this series isn’t airing and every night is an incoherent mess of feature films and sitcom reruns. For the once proud Independent Film Channel to be airing BACHELOR PARTY, the one not written by Paddy Chayefsky, is truly a shame.
I haven’t seen the latest eps of Portlandia, but although I agree it can be uneven at times, it’s entirely possible that Portlandia is only funny if you live in Portland. When it’s on, it’s SPOT on. I don’t think people who don’t live here understand quite how little the show exaggerates.
And IFC is a pretty low-rated channel in general. I can see why they would be excited about even numbers like these. (Hey, a 30% increase is a 30% increase. It’s is more than the broadcast channels are getting this season.)
You can be spot-on and still not funny. Season one was hilarious and spot-on. Season 2? Just spot-on. It’s like they’re getting all this attention just when they are running out of gas. Sadly, the same thing happened to Flight of the Conchords.
IFC’s answer to The Hub’s My Little Pony
I think Portlandia is funny but I also live in the Pacific Northwest so my views might need some scientific unskewing.
I don’t really laugh outloud, but as a native Californian, with many granola greenie weenies around here, I do find it amusing and on the money many times for my own area. (Berkeley and SF).
Time Warner Cable in LA doesn’t include IFC on my $150 per month cable bill .. so I’m always a season behind and have to watch on Netflix and I haven’t seen any of Season 3 yet. That said, I think it’s funny and I don’t think you have to live in the Northwest to appreciate it. With all the “Laugh at the dumb redneck” and “Character driven reality” shows the format alone is a welcome break from the derivative dumbed down drivel being offered by most cable networks. IFC is a decent cable channel and I’d much prefer TWC keep this channel than 8 different digital versions of Nat Geo or Discovery or even HBO (talk about a hodgepodge mess of bad movies)… but we all know, TWC doesn’t give 2 bits about their consumers.
It’s funny in the UK. Although, like others, I agree in that the quality is dropping with each season.
this show works on many different levels. its a lot deeper than the average person can take in. WATCH THIS SHOW ON ACID. you will get it if not then you will be kept in the dark
