EXCLUSIVE: Indomina Releasing, the distribution division of The Indomina Group, is quietly suspending North American operations. The move comes three years after CEO Jasbinder Singh Mann established the branch to acquire and distribute genre fare for his upstart global media studio. A spokesperson tells Deadline that 15 LA-based jobs will be affected and Indomina is attempting to find third-party outlets for titles including its high-profile 2012 Sundance acquisition Filly Brown, starring Gina Rodriguez, Edward James Olmos and the late Jenni Rivera, which has been in release-date limbo for months. The company denied rumors that its LA office is closing completely, saying it is still sending its international team to Berlin next month. The plan is for Indomina Group to focus on producing original content out of its Dominican Republic facilities, shifting to feature films with more commercial studio appeal. VP Acquisitions Rob Williams, who ran point on the company’s domestic pickups, will remain through the restructuring.
The releasing business hasn’t been kind to Indomina, which started out specializing in Asian and genre fare before it began adding art house and niche titles to its library. Most recently, the label put out documentary The Imposter, Leos Carax’s acclaimed Holy Motors, and Sheldon Candis’s LUV to dismal returns (Imposter took in $898K domestically; Holy Motors $641K; and LUV $143K after two weeks of release). Ice-T’s Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap, picked up out of Sundance, similarly tanked last summer despite strong reviews and a cast full of hip-hop heavyweights. The Jet Li-fronted IMAX import Flying Swords Of Dragon Gate, the fourth-highest-grossing Chinese-language film of all time, scored just $170K on 15 screens stateside.
Previously announced Indomina productions include a live-action Afro Samurai movie, the Simon Pegg comedy A Fantastic Fear Of Everything, and horror prequels Cabin Fever: Patient Zero and Cabin Fever: Outbreak. Patient Zero has already filmed and is aiming for a 2014 release.

This was completely predictable. That dude Jas Man has no clue what he’s doing!
rob is great and was handcuffed. how someone like jas was able to court those dominican billionaires is behind me. the rumor that it was thru online gaming seems like the only plausible explanation.
I agree. I interviewed for a position with Jas Man to head up distribution, as well as bring on a strategic home video entertainment brand and financing. Which I went on to facilitate for another company. He doesn’t have a clue, he has no real entertainment distribution, production or marketing know how. Just a good promoter Not surprised. This company assets is ripe for a acquisition and or hostile take over.
It’s a shame. That team works so hard. Good to see Rob is staying on – he’s a star.
Sad news. They gave those of us lucky enough to live in a big city the chance to see Tsui Hark’s two most recent films in theatres, where they need to be seen.
All those releases looked good and cool, but marketing and distribution isn’t easy. I thought about seeing all those films, but didn’t actually go. You need massive publicity and hype to get regular audiences out to arthouse fare like the Imposter or Holy Motors no matter how good they are as films. Hoping they figure it out, since someone there obviously has good taste in films.
Jasbinder seems like a good guy, loved what Indomina was doing in the urban and action space. They need a major studio to penetrate the market and they could be real player in the under-served urban genre market.
you obviously have no clue what you’re talking about.
I for one agree with you. Seems like everyone else just wanted a job or knows someone that got fired
What does this mean for Stephanie Denton and her international team? At AFM they launched a ewan mcgregor and kate hudson movie that sold very well. Is this still going into production now and being sold by them in Berlin?
The only person who is “curious” about what’s next for Stephanie Denton and this project is… Stephanie Denton.
Hi Steph!
No surprise here. Other then Rob, this place was full of idiots.
I mean I’ve never met a head of marketing more inept or incapable then the one in place at Indomina.
Too bad for the innocents that were there and actually knew what they were doing.
Good luck all.
No one wishes failure on anyone (except here in Movieland). I hope these fellas figure out the problem, hire superb talent, then let them do their jobs.
Agreed, Sham. They need the right team, then must let them do their jobs without feeling micromanaged.
I saw A Fantastic Fear of Everything at AFM. I’m a Simon Pegg fan and I must say I was sorely disappointed. And I wasn’t that excited about Filly Brown at Sundance 2012. Hate to dump on someone when they’re going down, but it’s a rough business.
No surprise at all – Indomina US were a disaster waiting to happen. Their buying team made some awful decisions, with overpriced acquisitions for niche product that was never going to make any money..
What a disaster . I feel bad for the film makers and the Vicini investors for putting their faith in very poor leadership.
If Rob Williams is so great, what is he doing working at Indomina??
A company that let him do a big theatrical push for movies like Holy Motors. Who wouldn’t want that?
I wonder what this means for Filly Brown? That movie is going to be a hit, my gut is telling me. If only Jenni Rivera’s fans buy tickets alone…there is HUGE money to be made. Latinos have such buying power, and I have a feeling that they are really going to support this one in a major way, especially now after Rivera’s passing. They’ve been underestimating her fan base here in the states, it’s astonishing.
Hey, sales agents don’t call them Incompeta for no reason.
Rob seems like a straight shooter and fairly levelheaded but the infrastructure always seemed lacking.
Fun Facts. Kevin Campbell (Disney) and Ruth Vitale (Paramount Classics) founded Indomina.
Jasbinder resented their connections. Forced them out. Disagreements over Jasbinder’s multiple eggs, birds logos.
Kevin traded up from Jasbinder to Steven Spielberg. Dreamworks.
Jasbinder replaced real industry professionals with fake executives.
Fake executives bought bad films. Made bad decisions. No marketing. No distribution. No money.
Close shop now.
Jas ruined the company hands down. Anyone that met him knew it. He blew through millions every year on films he hand picked. Upper management should have realized who is to blame and make a change long ago. And what’s with the man-cake anyways?
I had the unfortunate opportunity to sit in a meeting with him. Wow. Awful. I sat there the entire time, listening to someone dribble on and on; it was obvious he didn’t know what he was talking about/what he’s doing. Does he have any relevance in this market??
And yes, the man make-up is painfully obvious…
Rob is way too good for that company. Known him for well over a decade, and to say he’s smart, honest, and passionate about films (and truly loves the business) is an understatement. I think it’s time he lands at a place where his talents are appreciated/valued…
Well I think they have made some wise choices in the direction they were going. Some great titles too that i was personally very excited about. I think it’s hard to blame Singh Mann alone seen as he founded the company from scratch with Vicini holding and controlling the strings. Without him there wouldn’t have been a company period. Anyone in the Dominican can tell you how shoddy they are – just google them. A builder is only as good as the tools he’s given and unfortunately they’re renowned for scrap metal. HaHa at some of your comments though! Hopefully they can sort it out.
I trust the Vicinis and I’m dominican. I think they’re doing the right thing focusing on producing original content out of the Indomina-Pinewood Studios in the Dominican Republic. I never liked the indian dude, the crappy logo and most of their acquisitions of movies nobody wants to see. If you want to be taken seriously, think big.
Say what you will, but that Rob is one hot piece of ass!
This is a company that was founded on the premise to serve the under-served 18-34 male fan base. When was the last time they were under-served?????????
