HBO has officially announced a third-season pickup of Lena Dunham’s comedy Girls, which has received a 12-episode order, up from 10 for the first two seasons. HBO has been making preparations for a third season of Girls for the last couple of months. The network closed a new overall deal with executive producer Jenni Konner to return as co-showrunner alongside creator/star/executive producer Dunham. The duo, who executive produce Girls with Judd Apatow, have assembled a writing team, with Paul Simms replacing Bruce Eric Kaplan as co-executive producer as Kaplan is busy working on his HBO pilot. (He remains involved with Girls). The writers have already been working on scripts for Season 3 in anticipation of a pickup. Dunham inadvertently confirmed the renewal on Alec Baldwin’s podcast earlier this week. Season 3 of Girls is expected to film on the stage used by Baldwin’s departing 30 Rock at Silvercup Studios.
On the same night it won Golden Globes for best comedy series and best comedy actress (Dunham) earlier this month, Girls opened its second season to 866,000 viewers, down slightly from its series premiere last year. The premiere episode of the second season has since exceeded a gross audience of 3.8 million viewers.

I just really don’t get this show’s hype. And,no, I’m not jealous. Just don’t get it.
It’s simple. 3.8 million losers watch (if that’s anywhere close to the real numbers – clicking on for 5 minutes to see what it’s about counts as a viewer) losers to feel better about themselves; something to relate to.
3.8 million? Not in 3.8 million years. Not a fan of this derivative show but very happy for Jenni Konner, she’s a swell lady and the real talent trying to make Lena’s dreck work.
3.8 million viewers my butt. HBO could have run Girl’s 24/7 on HBO2 and still not reached 3.8 million viewers.
Oh, HBO, will you ever get back to quality programming?
Oh. I thought the show was on FOX, not HBO. LOL
Also, Allison Williams is adorable.
Happy to see such great talent getting rewarded. Haters gonna hate, but congratulations Lena, Jenni, HBO and all the fans!
Yeah, both of you. And oh how trendy and rebellious you are.
Cue the haters.
Great ending to the week… (not the pickup, the eventual comments I’m going to read here)

Wow it’s so nice to see a story on Lena’s show on Deadline without any snarky remarks.
Congrats Lena!!! Love your show!
I watched an episode of this show and thought to myself, well that wasn’t bad. Certainly not the voice of my generation, but not a bad show. I think the whole Lena being in her 20′s thing is what gives the show a bad rap. Goes with the Mike Birbigglia joke “How do you get every other comic to hate you? Put out a CD when you’re 24.” Or something like that. Hate on you jealous souls.
This is HBO’s era of “reward” television, don’t you know. They will tell you, with no embarrassment or shame, that they would never greenlight a series like THE WIRE today. Fair enough. I just wish they wouldn’t lie about the viewership of their shitty shows to justify it, especially when the morons of the HFPA are giving them even bigger rocks to hide behind. I’ll watch HBO again when they again feel like they have something to prove.
Will never green light a show like the wire?
Why NOT?
Maybe cause it’s not dumbed down enough. Most shows on tv are extremely silly.
Dear HBO,
Thank you very much for validating the recent decision to cancel my subscription…
It is okay not to like something and say so. It doesn’t mean you are a “hater” – you don’t like it and many times these reasons are valid. I have only seen it when there was a free preview weekend on HBO and have to say, like the first post, I dont get it. I didnt find it funny or smart, but slow and dull and a little depressing. I dont know what Stephanie G means by “reward” television – nepotism? But I understand why The Wire would not get the pass today. On another board where the article was about books that should be movies a lot of people chimed in with their favorites – science fiction, historical novels and material set in locations that would be challenging to shoot in – shows that would cost money. And it just seems like the whole deal with TV these days is “how cheap can we make it”? There are very few programs on where you cannot hear the shriek of those pennies being pinched.
The hatred says more about the haters than the show. Don’t watch it. I think it’s good and funny in spots; self-indulgent and awful in others. But I get that I’m not the audience they’re going for. HBO has niche comedies which don’t grab big audiences. Just like NBC’s.
This is a portrait of my generation,I don’t live in north america for this reason is really difficult to get this show but worth it. Perhaps is depressive but is the first to touch deeper issues respectfully at the end of each chapter I finish satisfied, spoken by hundreds of young people in economic crisis and new era of human relations because pretend that life is like “Sex in City” is like living in chapter of “Teletubbies”. Perhaps does not speak for you but gives voice to millions who are out of North American and trust me is real.
I gave this show a full season to get me interested. After watching Season 1, I can say, for me anyway, not one of the characters resonated enough to make me care about them. The anti-Sex In The City? Perhaps. Today’s Seinfeld or Friends? Not even close.
Speaking only for myself, if all the characters exhibit not even one likable trait, then watching the show becomes a waste of time. I did tune in to the first episode of Season 2 to see if there was ANY improvement or character development. None were present.
While it is commendable that Lena is raking in the cash at such a young age, she needs a better long-term vision for her “voice”. And Judd, we get it. Girls can be as raunchy as guys. Now show us something new and more insightful.
I used to feel the same way, that it was very self indulgent and and the characters were not very likable, but Lena really finds her rhythm in season 2. She’s gotten very good at portraying her characters as flat and then revealing that other side of them. It seems to capture a lot about the way we interact with people and define others in simple terms for convenience.
I love love love this show A-amazing!!!
I love this series. Its entertaining and quirky. Im eagerly awaiting season 3
You do realize its more “trendy and rebellious” to hate on lena dunham, just throw the backlash, cuz its easier to hate something that’s being praised and leaves a stigma……entourage had characters just as self absorbed and self important and repelant, so does its always sunny in philidelphia, workaholics, louis, and curb your enthusiasm. The only difference between those shows and this one is its starring male leads instead of female leads. No, wait there is another difference, girls doesn’t glamourize or condone any of the dumb decisions that they make, rather it realistically portays young adult woman, who have a lot to learn and much humbling experiences to undergo, to get to the point of self realization. Not to mention, just like all the other shows I’ve listed, which are all decent in their own own right, lena dunham is in on the joke…she is aware how self absorbed, unaware, immature and clueless hannah and marnie are…..and the acting and writing is so spot on to things that, not all, but half of all girls say….literally things I’ve heard them say and things I’ve seen them do. Stop being so “hipster” that you look right past the genius of this fully realized, if flawed, show. It has a 27 year old showrunner, maybe give her room to grow, and don’t just decide to hate her cuz you don’t get it right away.
Also, people are saying there isn’t one likable character…ummm….shoshanna and charlie…..and jessa is likable 60 percect of the time, just like most of the human race, she has true moments of undeniable self inportance, that only a pretty entitled young woman could have…..but she also has moments of true wisdom for example lines such as “Be Careful, boys like him will try anything once….even love.” Or hearing kathrine out and understanding her feelings of resentment towards jessa. Ray and adam have real moments of honesty and clarity, too especially when adam’s character is given more tv time in the second half of season two….honestly the only characters on the show almost competely repelent are hannah and marnie, who realistically get thrown a lot of tough blows, rightfully so, to portay entitled life and how being thrown in the real world can humble you when you’ve been sheltered so long. I applaud you girls. Not everyone is likable. Duh.
realy want 3 season!!
waiting)
I also want to add, why should include characters of color?, It seems much more racist require so.
