After months of negotiations, AMC and Fox Television Studios have closed a deal to bring back previously cancelled The Killing to AMC for a third season. Negotiations with Netflix for a second window to the series are still ongoing. As part of the new deal with AMC, Veena Sud, who developed the adaptation of the Danish series and ran the first two seasons, returns as executive producer, writer and showrunner along with stars Mireille Enos (Sarah Linden) and Joel Kinnaman (Stephen Holder). After the show received backlash from viewers for stretching the resolution of the case from the first season into Season 2, the producers are committing that the new mystery in Season 3 will be resolved over the course of 12 episodes. Production on Season 3 begins February 25 in Vancouver.

A year after closing the Rosie Larsen case, Linden is no longer a detective. But when her ex-partner Stephen Holder’s search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that connects to a previous murder investigation by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she’d left behind. “I couldn’t be happier to know that I will be returning to work with AMC, FTVS and Mireille and Joel on what is and has always been a passion project for me,” said Sud. “To the fans that have supported the series, thank you for doing so. My team and I will work hard to deliver the best story that we can for Season 3.”
The Killing is produced by Fox TV Studios and executive produced by Mikkel Bondesen. Kristen Campo serves as co-executive producer. “The Killing from day one has been a truly original take on the crime drama. Veena Sud and the rest of the talented creative team are hard at work shaping the lives of Linden and Holder, portrayed by the terrific Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman,” said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president. Added Fox TV Studios president David Madden, “We have always believed in The Killing and remain extremely proud of it, which is why we all worked so hard to find a scenario that could give it new life.” The series, which premiered on AMC on April 3, 2011 averaged 1.9 million viewers over its two previous seasons.

New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

Great show and would have been better if, yes, they had wrapped up the first season and moved on to a different case. The writing was atrocious in the second season. I hope they get back on track. The show deserves better.
That is great! I look forward to seeing this pair working another case again.
Hopefully it won’t be raining in every episode. I know it rains alot in Seattle but if it rains like this projects suggests, Seattle is going to float away!
I love the rain–it adds mood and menace to the show. It gives the show a noir ambience.
David Madden’s unyielding passion for bad ideas knows no bounds.
HELL YES! Nice to see that the show has learned from its mistake, a rare thing in this town. LOVED every minute of Season One. Will definitely be tuning back in for Season Three.
So excited it’s back!
Thank you for bringing back a good show.
Now if they can only bring back Rubicon.
This. Rubicon was a much better show.
So true! Rubicon was wonderful.
Bringing back RUBICON would be the best !!!
Rubicon was AWFUL.
Such a great pilot. Such a horrible season.
I’m with you. Rubicon was one of the best shows on the air. It was so different that it was refreshing while being very cerebral.
I couldn’t agree more! Rubicon deserved another season!
Made my day. Thanks for the news.
Wow, I thought I was the only person who watched and enjoyed Rubicon.
Makes my day, loved seasons 1 & 2.
Next bring back 666, can’t believe it was cancelled
i swear watching this show die and come back over and over is far more interesting than the show ever was.
i can’t wait to see what they do next season, bring it back on youtube?
I was a fan from the beginning and I was one who did NOT complain and whine about the story-telling.
Looking forward to more of Mireille and Joel.
Really happy they decided to bring the show back. I felt like they can do a lot more with these lead characters. Looking forward to Season 3
I’m thrilled the show is coming back…yes the second season was disappointing, but the performances were excellent as was the concept…i like the idea of contained stories/season…kudos…
I got 1 on Netflix and enjoyed it not being solved till end of season 2 which I watched week to week. thought that was the whole fun of the show not catching Rosie’s killer.
I LOVE this show and somehow missed that it wasn’t coming back, I am glad I did so I wouldn’t have been pissed all this time. Brillant acting and unique story telling. Sure, I was annoyed at the ending of season 1 but I wouldn’t have complained, ever, I think the story, the characters that were introduced in season 2 were fantastic and I loved it. Season 3 can’t get here fast enough.
I loved this show and although i too wanted to know the results of the case, it kept me coming back to find out more for the next season. Really though, don’t all dramas do this? Make you wait to find out “who done it”? Twin Peaks, if I can recall, went on a long time (maybe even several seasons) before you found out what happened to “Laura Palmer”. All the while you’re getting into the characters and the other subplots. I do like whey Hollywood listens to their viewers and brings back shows worth watching (or not cancelling them in the first place). If I see ONE more reality show or contest, or anything with someone name “Honey Boo Boo”, I’m canceling cable and resorting to book readin’!
Being from the northwest, I have to say; yes it does rain like that. You have to remember; the two seasons took place over about two weeks. It can rain like for two straight weeks.
Actually, the two seasons took place over exactly 26 days (one episode equals one day in the story, and there were 26 episodes over the two seasons). Also, the show was taking place in October, with the date of Rosie’s murder being given at one point as a date in early October (which date exactly I can’t recall now). October in Seattle is not as rainy as what we saw in the show. In certain years November and December can be that rainy, but not October. Anyway, I am not one who thinks the show had to be “meteorologically correct.” Dramatists are entitled to take liberties with the truth for effect.
Sorry, Ms. Sud. There’s no way I’m going to watch this, as I’m not falling for the BS you pulled in Season 1 EVER AGAIN.
Chill out.
Veena Sud needs to go. She is horrible. This could be like a second first season but not with the horrible Veena Sud still on board.
I couldn’t agree more with Midori. Joel Kinnaman and Mirielle Enos are great actors and they totally made the show go, even when, at times, it was downright unwatchable during season 2, and even though the entire show was a Twin Peaks rip off. Veena Sud’s hubris nearly destroyed the show. If you rewatch season 2, like, 95% of it doesn’t progress the actual story in anyway whatsoever, and that was because Sud simply tried to waste time until the season 2 finale, because she isn’t nearly as creative as she thinks she is.
In short, bringing the show back: yes. Bringing Veena Sud back: no way.
I’m loving this news. Can’t wait to see where Mereille Enos is takes her character.
Thank you for bring back an AWESOME show! My gf and I were on the edge of our seats every episode! So stoked for Season 3!
What a great surprise to hear you are returning. Congrats! I look forward to seeing these characters work together again to solve crimes.
I didn’t realize the size of the rubicon following. There is no show in the last few years I want back as bad as that one.
Excellent news. I enjoyed the second season and didn’t have as much of a problem with it as others seem to. I thought the two lead actors had excellent chemistry and I look forward to a 3rd season.
I totally loved the show, and did not mind that it took 2 seasons to solve the murder of Rosie Larsen. I can be pretty patient. In fact… due to the Dish network, AMC debacle, I have yet to see the final 2 episodes, “Donnie and Marie” and “What I Know.” I am hoping that AMC will re-broadcast the series, or at least the final two episodes. It would be nice to know how it ended, before the next one begins. This is truly quality television, done in excellent style and with wonderful acting. Regardless, I will be tuning in for season 3.
