Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage.
J.J. Abrams never sought publicity for showing dying Star Trek fan Daniel Craft a rough cut of the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness. And today, two days after Craft’s death, Abrams felt uncomfortable when asked about the gesture after the TCA panel for his NBC series Revolution. “It’s very sensitive,” Abrams said, looking genuinely humbled. He did say, however, that it was “unbelievably touching” to have been asked and clearly was overwhelmed by the opportunity and responsibility to grant a dying man’s wish. Craft was diagnosed with terminal cancer six weeks ago and, following an online post by one of his friends about how much Craft wanted to see the new Star Trek movie or at least a trailer for it, Abrams responded privately, and a rep for Paramount Pictures, the studio behind Star Trek, took a DVD with an early cut to Craft’s home for a special screening of the film that isn’t coming out until May.

Just when you think the Hollywood system is broken and out of touch, something wonderful & organic like this comes along. BRAVO Paramount & JJ.
I dont care what a cynic might say about this gesture – I am genuinely moved.
A dying mans last days alive were lifted… Well done all involved.
“A dying man’s last days alive were lifted….” watching Star Trek. Excuse me, but no fair. I’m terminally ill too and I want to spend my last moments in this lifetime watching “Django Unchained”. But I guess I’ll take Stsr Trek if that’s all that’s available.
It seems that your dying wish is to post a snarky comment on Deadline. Congrats! Your wish is granted!
I’m keeping a nice warm spot by the fire for you, Bill.
Bill,
“Compassion”
Look it up in the dictionary before you check out.
Absolutely no need for this post. Show some respect. It’s not all about you.
In fact, bill, it’s not about you at all.
Low-life comments are not needed. Another insensitive jerk in LA? Gee Bill, take a number.
The commenter clearly has no life experience.
When you’re completely surrounded by fear and illness and death, even a temporary break from that horror is a tremendous gift.
The commenter will understand that someday. And it won’t be so amusing to him, then.
Props to Abrams for his kindness to Craft… And we also remember his kindness to Randy Pausch.
If you want to see “Django” so goddamn bad Bill, I’m sure there’s a cinema near you playing it. You’ll be doing the people in your life a favor by giving them 3 hours of peace from your moronic ass.
Paramount & JJ that was a really classy thing to do . Thank you
Wow, what a selfless gesture – I’m impressed and inspired. Well done, Mr. Abrams…well done.
This is one of the coolest things I’ve come across since Christian Bale paid a surprise visit to a Colorado hospital this past summer & Ron Perlman dressed up as Hellboy (in full makeup & costume) to visit a sick young fan.
Not that it was going to matter anyway, but I won’t mind paying $15 to $20 to see the new Star Trek this summer. J.J. Abrams is to be commended for this kind act.
As a film maker, if a dying persons’ final wish was to see one of my films, I would find the burden of responsibility crushing. I would always wonder whether they were enchanted or disappointed by my efforts. JJ Abrams could have taken the “easy” route and just showed him the prologue. Nobody could have blamed him because the film wasn’t finished. But revealing the entire film was an act of genuine human compassion. Abrams has risen enormously in my estimation.
JJ Abrams is my favorite movie hero!
I bet you that guy is spreading spoiler alerts all over heaven!
Good job Mr Abrams! Simply put you are a class act for fans of any movie franchise.
Pretty cool. Nicely done Mr. Abrams & Paramount!
I guess there’s a little heart left in show biz folks after all.Class acts deserve to make the headlines more often than crass acts.
I know a number of the people at Bad Robot. Class act from top to bottom.
What a nice thing for them to take time to do. I’m sure it meant a lot to the guy, and how could any of us not think of him when we go to see the film. Really touching gesture from a great artist.
I wish they would stop exploiting it. They did show it to dying fan. It was nice and humble… And then five minutes later they run to press to say and show everybody how humble and good they are…
And few days later they still talk about it. Just stop. I don’t want to hear it. That happened. It was nice. But stop exploiting it to promote your movie. They couldn’t just quietly show it to fan. No, they had to run to press and make it worldwide news. Like why would you do charity when no one will hear about it and praise you for it….
It’s like with that Marine Ball when Mila Kunis was asked by soldier, accept invitation and then every soldier began posting invitation to every celebrity. When Betty White and Miley Cyrus declined – they stopped. I feel like now many sick or dying people will post online messages how they want to see Superman and other summer blockbusters. They opened box in Star Trek team when they went to press to tell everybody how good they are.
I respect what they did. But I wish they would make it private without showing off.
Not exploiting it at all. He was at a press event for something else and someone asked him about it. Did you even read the article?
I guess people who are famous can never do anything nice like this since the public may find out and wankers like this will whine that it was done just for the sake of publicity?
MY, my, Shy, this sounds so like a severe case of “sour grapes” to me! If you have nothing better to do than bash such wonderful acts of kindness, I suggest you get a job, get a life, and get on with it! Mr. Abrams is to be commended for his compassion. This was an EPIC act of kindness! Major Kudos to you, J.J.! What a wonderful thing to do!
Stop milking this, JJ! GAWD, this is in horrible taste. EVery day there’s a new goddam angle on JJ Abrams helping this dying patient. Will the stories ever stop? After the first one I wanted to believe it was genuine but I don’t any more. It’s a blatant P.R. ploy. Two years from now he’ll do a presser and begin, “I’m JJ Abrams the guy who helped the dying dude in 2013…”
The movie isn’t released until May. JJ had been asked about the screening at the TCAs. Add it together and you will see that it’s not a p.r. ploy. Abrams can’t stop the stories about this. I doubt he has editorial discretion with deadline.com, for example. It’s okay to think there is not a motive here other than trying to make someone dying of cancer feel a little better.
My dear Milk And Honey, have you always been an ass, or is it a recent occurence? You need to join Shy; Get a job, get a life, and GET ON WITH IT!
I have read this story in numerous outlets and it still moves me to tears. Bravo to all involved.
Wow. As Maude would say, “God will get you for that Milk n Honey” which is a misnomer by the way.
Gene Roddenberry is looking down on JJ beaming from ear to ear!
wow, thats how Hollywood sound act!
In May 2010, I was told that I needed surgery to remove the cancerous tumor from lung and the is a possibility I will not leave the hospital alive. I pray none of you snarky idiots ever hear that kind of news, or you are not in the position that my wife was in, 8 months pregnant with our 3rd child, when the doctor told us I might die. I am alive and well now, but always under threat. Your world view is seriously changed when the end is in sight.
