UPDATE, 8:56PM TODAY: Disney has just confirmed J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII. Screenplay is written by Michael Arndt. Abrams, his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are producing along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney/Lucasfilm banner. Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are consulting. Kasdan was screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
From the release:
“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”
George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”
“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”
PREVIOUS, THURSDAY PM: Star Trek director J.J. Abrams will be helming the next Star Wars movie. “It’s done deal with J.J.,” a source with knowledge of the situation told Deadline today. Argo director Ben Affleck was also up for the gig, the source says. Despite saying publicly that he didn’t want to direct a new Star Wars, Abrams was courted heavily by producer Kathleen Kennedy to take the job. Expected in 2015, Episode VII will be the first new Star Wars movie since 2005′s Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. Michael Arndt is writing the script for the first installment of the relaunch of George Lucas’ franchise by Disney. The company bought Lucasfilm in October for $4 billion, with the Star Wars franchise the jewel in the crown. At the time, CEO Bob Iger said three more Star Wars films were in the pipeline. (For more information visit the Star Wars site.) Abrams’ other space-based franchise sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, comes out May 17. This weekend, the PGA will honor the Lost creator and Revolution producer with its 2013 Norman Lear Award For Television. Abrams is repped by CAA and Oasis Media Group.

Coming soon… announcement that Ford, Fisher, Hamill, Billy Dee to join cast…
Mr. Arndt — do it “write” and have them pass the torch.
Will reserve judgement after i see ST2.
Disney is being foolish, they shouldve approached someone with a love for the franchise instead. JJ Abrams made rude remarks about Star Wars in an interview about Star Trek. I would much rather see Kevin Smith helm the new Star Wars series.
There are only a few problems with Kevin Smith. For one, these days he’s more interested in podcasting and weed than filmmaking. Moreover, he’s a mediocre director at best.
He’s a pretty limited writer too.
That’s some conflict of interest. Will we see a cross-pollination of Star Wars/Trek characters now? Is he the only go-to guy for Space Operas?
Is there something wrong with JJ doing both Star Wars and Star Trek? I really dont know…
His Star Trek was already more like Star Wars.
LENS FLARE!!!
NNoOOOoOOOoOOooooooooo!
This announcement is a lame attempt to settle the Star Trek vs Star Wars rivarly. Star Wars should be great with Abrams but will get so much flak from trekkies.
Awesome news.
Abrams will do it great. These are the movies I’ve waited for since Jedi. I don’t know if I can wait another parsec.
So you don’t know if you can wait another unit of distance, not time?
This is a good day to be a Star Wars fan
You’re all clear kid! Now let’s blow this thing and go home!
Having the same director for both of Sci-Fi’s premier franchises is an illustration of the lack of creativity oozing from Hollywood.
I like Abrams…but this is ridiculous.
This is an excellent point.
I was just going to say something about that, but you said it perfectly..
Great choice! J.J. is a huge Star Wars fan.
I’d love to see a Tarantino/Rodriguez rewrite of the script. The dialogue in the Star Wars movies is always so stilted.
I doubt Rodriguez even considers himself a screenwriter, while Tarantino should be considered an overwriter.
good call
Lando Unchained!
All I have to say is that Abrams must drink five 5-Hour Energy drinks a day to keep his schedule.
His work on Star Trek speaks for itself, I think he’ll rock it.
What will happen to the Star Trek franchise now?
I vote Brad Bird for Star Trek 3. If Abrams doesn’t do the third he’ll work on the story and produce, with Brad to direct.
Actually that could be fantastic.
OK… this is better than Brett Ratner or some commercials neophyte directing… and its a safe move that will keep shareholders and execs happy…
No one was really asking for a new Star Wars film… the kids today dont love it like my generation does. And my generation has been burnt by Lucas’s reedits, special editions and the prequels themselves…
However, JOSS WHEDON was born to make this film… He comes from an education in story and myths… has made Buffy and Firefly… and shown the world he can handle spectacle and entertainment with Avengers.
For my unsubstantiated pennies worth and for worldwide theatrical for Episode 7… with J.J you get $1.4bn… with Whedon you get $1.7bn…
Hiring Whedon is just as unfair as Abrams.
Your probably right ILDC… but why do you say that?
When recommending Whedon’s 2005 space-western Serenity, based on his short-lived Fox series Firefly, I tell people it’s the best Star Wars film you never saw. It has all the things that made Lucas’ original trilogy great – a swashbuckling sensibility, humor, and characters you actually care about.
Yeah, Clone Wars didn’t count.
So Abrams is going to jump right from editing STID (not to mention riding the promotion hamster wheel) directly into developing, producing, shooting, editing and supervising FX for Star Wars VII, and have it ready for release in two years? While also producing a bunch of pilots and at least a couple other movies?
I like Abrams a lot as a director, and I think he’d do a great job, but something about this doesn’t seem right.
But…but…but you can’t be a Star Trek and a Star Wars fan at the same time! The Internet told me so!
Seriously though I love his take on Star Trek but this is just weird!
So true but can you imagine saying something like that 30 years ago? The universe is upside down and Star Trek is the cooler series. Does not compute!
Can you imagine if now that he has turned Star Trek into an acclaimed blockbuster he then goes on to mess up Star Wars?
Or as I like to call it… LOST in space
Good pun AND a clever handle, three pointer with the foul!
Ahhh man this movie is gonna suck. Its pretty much a foregone conclusion. It is officially over.
sadly, I feel the same way. i was excited for a few weeks there
i was excited for a few weeks there.. I was hoping for other directors and I remember reading one article where Abrams was considered. I remember thinking how ridiculous that sounded…
You mean RUIN IT?
Nice! I and my family are looking forward for new star wars
I hope he’s not going to film it in a Budweiser plant.
And yes, I’m ALREADY tired of the lens flare!
