UPDATE, 8:56PM TODAY: Disney has just confirmed J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII. Screenplay is written by Michael Arndt. Abrams, his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are producing along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney/Lucasfilm banner. Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are consulting. Kasdan was screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
From the release:
“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Kennedy. “J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”
George Lucas went on to say “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”
“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor,” J.J. Abrams said. “I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”
PREVIOUS, THURSDAY PM: Star Trek director J.J. Abrams will be helming the next Star Wars movie. “It’s done deal with J.J.,” a source with knowledge of the situation told Deadline today. Argo director Ben Affleck was also up for the gig, the source says. Despite saying publicly that he didn’t want to direct a new Star Wars, Abrams was courted heavily by producer Kathleen Kennedy to take the job. Expected in 2015, Episode VII will be the first new Star Wars movie since 2005′s Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith. Michael Arndt is writing the script for the first installment of the relaunch of George Lucas’ franchise by Disney. The company bought Lucasfilm in October for $4 billion, with the Star Wars franchise the jewel in the crown. At the time, CEO Bob Iger said three more Star Wars films were in the pipeline. (For more information visit the Star Wars site.) Abrams’ other space-based franchise sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, comes out May 17. This weekend, the PGA will honor the Lost creator and Revolution producer with its 2013 Norman Lear Award For Television. Abrams is repped by CAA and Oasis Media Group.

Ruined one franchise now he will ruin another. I wonder how many lens flares the new Star Wars movie will have with JJ in charge.
Hahaha…please NO!
So this means that the cast of Star Trek IV will go back in time and prevent Anakin from hooking up so she and Luke will have never been born. Then Anakin never turns to the Dark side, and the Republic remains in power. Wow how cool. Now we can do anything we want and to heck with the history and the existing fan base. Just change it for the hell of it. The important thing is to make it more….edgy. Yah, an entirely new universe for Star Wars, that is what we need!!!!!
This director can go bleep himself.
Look, sir, lens flares!
Nooooooooooooo!!! The poor man´s Spielberg STRIKES again! Yet another franchise set to be utterly decimated,ONLY this time its the franchise of ALL franchises that will get the “Bad Robot” treatment. AAAARRRRGGHHH!!
So true, barely any talent and gets rave reviews from the minions that blindly follow this golden spoon, he knows one thing and that is take the money before the industry finds out he is a complete fraud!
Now 2 of the greatest Sci Fi franchises will no resemblance to its original whatsoever. Winning!
The nerd is strong in him, I respect the decision.
I hope he begins VII with the slaughter of Jar Jar Binks, god what an awful character.
So one film franchise is pseudoscience and the other is pseudoreligion. He could get really grandiose with this one!
Gee, I am so glad I do not constrain myself to one point of view for Star Trek or Star Wars, or any other sci-fi franchise. I am always interested to see another’s take on a given franchise. JJ did a great job with Trek, but he also had a bit more influence on that. I don’t know how much influence he’ll have for SW ep VII, but I think he’ll do a fine job. Trek has to move forwards…not backwards, and so does Star Wars.
Cue opening scroll: Star Wars: Episode VII. The Jedi invent a time machine and go back to change the course of the Universe. And none of the events in the first six episodes actually happened…
JJ is bad choice for the franchise.
was truly horrified by the fact that disney had got the rights to publish the next star wars films but this news has give me some hope that they may be worth watching
BEST NEWS IN THE WORLD! I am so happy!
SCI FI KING JJ Abrams to direct STAR WARS was my dream.
He is biggest young brain in Hollywood. With Great new ideas always try unique and fresh things.
Great man, great director. So gappy.
Should have been Brad Bird.
Jis’ wait a dern minnit. Given that LOST DID have that iddy biddy chunk of time warp to it, what about the ultimate J. . Abrams “interlocken” Spock, Kirk, Bones and Scotty PLUS Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin and Luke Skywalker somehow dealing with Ben, Juliet, Jack and the ever wise-cracking Sawyer in an alternate warp that moves from Tatooine to Dharma Inititive Island to the bridge of the Enterprise. THAT, YES THAT, I would pay good coin to see….
This is too safe. JJ Abrams already made a Star Wars movie when he made Star Trek. I would have much rather see some other talented director take this on.
Man, you got that right.
Best choice. The nerds win onceagain. Steven Spielberg is still #1 for action/sci fi movies. But Abrams is next.
YES! Perfect, perfect choice!
Spielberg is so washed up he is invisible. Spielberg? Seriously?
First Jar Jar, now JJ. For whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee Star Wars. Hey! Maybe they’ll get John Toll so I can see what’s happening.
That’s a scary coincidence…
Believe it or not, even JJ admitted to too much lens flare – let that gag die, damn it : P
I am so happy. BEST news in the world.
JJ is SCI FI KING with so many and unique ideas. He is biggets brain in hollywood. He is great man.
Aw!
I was hoping Micheal Bay would direct and he’d bring back Jar Jar Binks.
After 70 comments none of the folks who don’t like J.J. have said, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this…”
(PS: J.J. will rock this franchise, lens flare or no lens flare.)
Having the same guy helm both hints they could be so much in common that there could be a convergence between them, with the same ownership. Kirk battles the Sith Lords. Who wins? R2D2, of course.
