UPDATED: J.J. Abrams is having a pretty good end of the week. After signing on to direct the next Star Wars movie yesterday, he received two pilot orders today. NBC has greenlighted Believe, Abrams’ project with Oscar-nominated filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón. The network also has ordered Undateable, a comedy from writer Adam Sztykiel (Due Date) and producer Bill Lawrence.
The high-concept Believe, which had a pilot production commitment, was written by Cuarón and Mark Friedman (Home Of The Brave). It is about the unlikely relationship between a girl in possession of a great gift/powers — which will come into their own in seven years — and the man who is sprung from prison to protect her from those trying to hunt her down. Cuarón, Friedman, Abrams and Bryan Burk are executive producing for Warner Bros TV and Abrams’ Bad Robot. Cuarón is attached to direct. The project has been on a fast track for a pickup and started to explore casting of the young lead back in December. The NBC pickup comes less than an hour after Fox ordered a futuristic cop drama from Abrams and Fringe showrunner J.H. Wyman.

Undateable hails from Warner Bros TV and Lawrence’s studio-based Doozer. The multi-camera project, which had a script commitment with penalty, is based on the book Undateable: 311 Things Guys Do That Guarantee They Won’t Be Dating Or Having Sex, by Ellen Rakieten & Anne Coyle. Written by Sztykiel with Lawrence supervising, it is described as a bromantic comedy about two very different guys who are bonded by their common inability to attract women. Sztykiel and Lawrence executive produce with Jeff Ingold. Like Abrams, Lawrence too has a pilot at Fox, single-camera comedy I Suck At Girls. Cuarón, Friedman and Sztykiel are with UTA, Abrams with CAA, Lawrence with ICM Partners.

Kylie XY, anyone?
Ooops. That should be Kylie XX!
Hahaha i thought the exact same thing!!!
Is the reason the girl’s powers are fully realized in seven years because that’s how long they want the show to run?
probz
I’m sure (SURE) the powers taking 7 years to fully take effect has everything to do with STORY and nothing to do with standard contracts for tv leads lasting 7 years.
Or because girls are slow. Do we think these pick ups are because of Star Wars announcement or because Peter Roth fell on his sword for JJ. I think both.
While I am not too crazy about J.J. Abrams, any project with Alfonso Cuarón gets my attention.
high-concept dramas get boring fast
While Bill Lawrence is a genius, Undateable sounds kind of bad. I will still give it a chance, on account of it being from BL, but it honestly sounds like a bad idea for a show. If NBC had any common sense, they would give a pilot order to The Swamp. That was a good script, and I am still holding out hope for it.
Bill Lawrence is hardly a genius. He has created two over-praised, poorly rated, unfunny shows. How he manages to keep getting TV deals is beyond me. He must have sold his soul to the devil.
He’s so mediocre and has no soul to sell. Believe me.
I was hoping Bill Lawrence’s political comedy would get picked up.
I heard both networks had a serious case of buyers remorse and these had to be pushed through.
please explain what you mean by this? why did they have to be pushed through? bc the other pilots were no good, or these were no good?
only nbc in the article here…Dina, I would like you to clarify your comment. It’s people like you that make deadline a place full of wannabe haters.
