The chess pieces are certainly in play at CNN today. Managing editor Mark Whitaker is out, 20/20’s Chris Cuomo has been poached from ABC and now sources are telling Deadline that new CNN boss Jeff Zucker is about to move Erin Burnett from primetime to a new morning show. Insiders say that the morning show slot is where former Today Show executive producer Zucker wants to start making his mark at the network. Burnett would co-host in the AM with Cuomo, who’s role in the as yet-untitled morning show was announced with his hiring by CNN this morning. No word yet as to who will take over Burnett’s 7 PM OutFront show, which has been struggling in the ratings like most of CNN’s primetime. Burnett joined CNN in April 2011 from CNBC. Her primetime show debuted in October 2011.

Going to miss Soledad O’ Brien. Erin is okay, but she’s not Ms. Warm and fuzzy who you want to wake up to.
And Soledad is “warm and fuzzy”???? Seriously????
I guess if you like lying on thorns….
Your so wrong. Soledad, while great, is not warm and fuzzy. Erin is quite accessible…even though it took me some time to get used to her style, she’s kinda great.
this needed to happen a long time ago. The poor girl was way out of her depth.
Not a bad idea… Erin likes tabloid news coverage and Zucker is a master at it (as is his former employer at NBC)so that’s a fit.
I think this is a really smart idea. Erin will be a good fit for the morning. These are some shrewd moves Zucker is making, and it is fun to try and keep up. But yes, please, for the love of all that is good in the world, FIRE PIERS MORGAN!
Are we still going to get more “Race, Race, Racism and Race: Why White People Ruined Everything and You’re a Big Racist” specials from Soledad O’ Brien?
After reading your comment I’d say there are more racists out there for her to talk about.
Agreed.
being a latin myself, it is kinda getting old these specials she does on black america, etc. who cares. it’s 2013.
I wrote to CNN once and demanded equal time with a special called “Being White in America. As you probably know, it never happened, but Soledad produced a sequel to “Being Black in America.”
Bold moves indeed. This is exciting. Agree on replacing Morgan…His brand could not possibly be much worse, could it? While they’re at it they could try fixing the website, with it’s 3rd grade writing and absurd sections (Sunday’s ‘Belief,’ etc).
As a 32 year old female professional, I love love Erin, what a fabulous role model for young women. I guess I’m in the minority of disappointment with this, her stories will now inevitably be dumbed down to compete with the other fluff morning shows.
You’re not alone. She is talented.
FC
Soledad is the total package. She brings intelligence, warmth, authority, and personality to the anchor chair. I like Erin Burnett but I hate to see Soledad kicked to the curb. It’s an unfortunate mindset that seemed to be prevalent at NBC which is small-minded in 2013. That formula has expired. I had hoped for a fresher approach.
Let’s not pigeonhole Soledad to “In America”. She has much more to offer.
Good move CNN. Soledad is awfully strident and not a good interviewer. Cuomo and Burnett will make a good solid team. I second the comment above to please, please, please fire Piers Morgan and put in someone like a Charlie Rose in that slot.
I like Erin. She has a great personality and is a great interviewer. The Erin and Chris combo may work.
Great news because WE need some refreshing, honest intelligent reporting verses the pathetic banter, clash of egos on ABC and NBC as of late. CBS is consistently good, but another option is even better.
Erin Burnett will not be a good cohost with Chris como. She’s acerbic with a smile on her face. You could do better. Why not let Soledad continue?
Soledad will probably continue with her doc series, “In America,” and special coverage around election time. She has young kids and probably enjoyed the ability to be home for them in the afternoons. And only a morning position allows for that type of flexibility. …Erin Burnett, btw, is so dry. Zero personality. I don’t understand why she has a show at all. She was a banker or something before CNN, then next thing you know, out of the blue, she’s on national TV. Makes no sense. …
In the interest of truth…Burnett was a CNBC anchor for several years before leaping to CNN. But I am not sure why she ditched her glamour image for the urban outfitters look. Clearly the former works better on cable news.
The CNN lineup has been a total trainwreck so far and thinking it is this guy’s expertise, he could help rejuvinate the mornings there again as the shows they have been airing have been abysmal.
I stopped watching the morning show on CNN. Soledad was a horrible interviewer. She interupted constantly. Likes to hear herself talk too much. I like Erin. Good move CNN. I’ll start watching the morning show again.
Moving Erin should be on Cooper’s ridiculous list. Really? As for the idea to have high ratings in a 7pm time slot-give it up. I’m not unionized and by the time I get home I’m making dinner while watching Erin. She is intelligent with a thoughtful approach and delivers the goods with a compassionate ease as well as a common sense approach. My only concern is cooking while watching Erin can sometimes be dangerous as I’ll admit grating an orange peel and finger while watching and listening to Erin Burnett. Kudos to the guy who recently scooped up her wedding finger. Besides I do not see Cuomo and Burnett as a good fit. He is a nice guy, a good reporter but very self-conscience and intense. I think they work best independently. Watching Erin Burnett’s program at 7pm gives me something useful to talk about while eating dinner. If Erin was gone my only alternative would be to watch the news magazine shows that focus on the likes of Kardashian’s and Lohan’s. No thanks! Burnett has a style unlike any other television journalist. Just a reminder to Zucker. Most businesses fail because they don’t adapt to change but more importantly because they forget their roots. CNN is about news and Erin reports as an educated journalist.
The horse-race of love and hate for Erin Burnett is the number one reason to find someone else! She is polarizing. She took her hour nowhere. The 7PM slot was Erin’s ego, the Erin show. It went no where. There are better talented people. In fact, why do you need a co-anchor! Just rotate talented women and men. And finally most important. Cuomo has more than million tweeter followers! Find someone of comparable quality rather stick Erin Burnett, her nowhere 90K followers, and nowhere show, and ego up there. Her team and agent have pushed and shoved this talentless person from day one and she went nowhere.
In response to MikeVa I don’t see Erin as polarizing. She makes you think. Isn’t that the job of a good journalist? Also, if you base the number of twitter followers as the most important factor for getting a job then you should be pushing for a Kardashian’s or one of the Jersey Shore reality cast members. After all, they have no post-secondary education but they sure have a lot of twitter followers as well as intelligent, thought provoking life changing ideas. Yes, I am being sarcastic. Twitter is nothing more than a self-promoting narcissistic marketing channel developed by Hollywood to promote Hollywood for a lot of lonely people in this world that need someone to latch to in order to give purpose and meaning to their own lives. Perhaps if the same people that put so much emphasis on twitter would actually try and make a difference themselves in this world instead of leaving it to others, the U.S. just might see an increase in G.D.P and be viewed as a world leader again. I don’t see Erin as egotistical as you say, but I do see her as self-confident. Your idea of rotating talents is good but most people like comfort and familiarity. If you walked into the office and saw new staff everyday I think you would find the work place a little less interesting.
I just watched Erin on her evening show defend the Coke Superbowl commercial (Arab on camel). I am very disappointed in her. Turned the show off, rarely watch it, and for sure will not watch her show again. I like Chris Cuomo, but will not watch the CNN morning show until he has a new partner….
Can somebody please for the love of God get Ann Curry away from NBC. They are treating her like pile of dog crap. They didn’t want her so fired her from Today, and now because someone else wants her they won’t let her go. Seriously?! Grow up NBC!
Ann needs to take over this new morning show with Chris Cuomo in CNN. Or put her on the CNN Newsroom during the day for a couple of hours.
Erin, Shmerin; Soledad, Shmoledad. The biggest wart on CNN remains Anderson Cooper. Can’t communicate. Can’t interview. Can’t hold an audience on a regular basis. Can’t do a story, it seems, without aiming the spotlight at himself. And how sad, moreover, that the discussion at CNN centers on personalities instead of news, which CNN covers with less and less frequency.
Yes fire Morgan and hire Rose I agree!!
I am a fiscal conservative but social moderate. I have started to pan through CNN’s channel which I have not done for a long while specifically because of Erin Burnett being down the middle. There is no comparison between Erin Burnett and investigative reporter and Soledad O’Brien, who simply pushes the liberal agenda. CNN has an opportunity to grow a moderate base providing Burnett is given time. A morning show seems to be a waste of her talents.
F.C.
A big mistake to move Erin from 7 PM.She is highly intelligent and an excellent reporter.I will not watch CNN in the AM as it is not convenient whereas I looked forward to a very currrent challenging program in the evening.Tim Carsley.
I’ll definitely be watching if Chris Cuomo is now in the mix. His coverage of storm Nemo was excellent. NBC morning show is now a mixture between Entertainment Tonight,Food Network, And Cosmopolitan. Erin Burnett, eh? I’d rather see Anderson Cooper anyday.Love him. Please keep Piers. He says what’s on his mind
