UPDATE: 11:25 AM: On its first night in its new time slot, Jimmy Kimmel Live had more viewers than The Late Show With David Letterman but fell short of topping The Tonight Show. ABC’s Kimmel pulled in 3.097 million viewers Tuesday night compared to 2.882 million for CBS’ Letterman and 3.274 million for Leno. The Tonight Show got 1.084 million in the Adults 18-49 demographic compared to Jimmy Kimmel Live’s 887,000. But Kimmel solidly bested The Late Show among demo, getting 30% more than Letterman’s 683,000.
PREVIOUSLY, 8:28 AM: Jimmy Kimmel had a very good night Tuesday. In his 11:35 PM debut for his ABC late-night talk show, the host beat now-rivals Jay Leno and David Letterman in households and in the key adults 18-49 demo. In 25 markets with local people meters, Jimmy Kimmel Live earned a 1.0/5 rating in 18-49, besting The Tonight Show’s 0.8/4 and Late Show’s 0.6/3. Among Nielsen’s 56 metered markets (with Memphis and Salt Lake City excluded), Kimmel’s move from midnight to a half-hour earlier saw his show receive a 2.8/8 household result, compared with Letterman’s 2.7/7 and Leno’s 2.4/6.

ABC announced in August that after a decade at midnight it was moving Kimmel to 11:35 PM . The ABC talk show hit solid highs last year with a debut visit from First Lady Michelle Obama in October and a first-time appearance by Kimmel’s hero Letterman on Halloween. At the end of October, Kimmel’s broadcast from Brooklyn during Hurricane Sandy ended up being the second-most-watched week in the show’s history. He also hosted the Primetime Emmys last year and was the headliner at the White House Correspondents Dinner in April. Jimmy Kimmel Live ended 2012 with its most-watched fourth quarter to date.

bwahahahahahaha.
Now that’s good news! but it might just be beginner’s luck.
Geez, those Leno numbers for Households are just awful. Before he gave way to Conan, Leno’s households were three times that high.
And both Jay and Dave’s 18-49 numbers are unacceptable. It’s a (relatively) young man’s game, guys. Take a hint – finally.
Yet kimmel couldn’t even beat jay In a premiere so I guess your statement is flawed… Not to mention railings usually start falling noe
Doesn’t seem that impressive to me, given all the promotion and compared to ratings for Conan’s debut(s) and Leno’s return. Hell, it didn’t even beat Nightline’s average in the slot.
Time will tell.
What a pathetic character Jay Leno is. He left on top a few years ago and just had to do that prime time show and then just had to get back on at 11:35 p.m. Now he’s losing to Jimmy Kimmel. Is it not best to get off the stage at some point before you have lost all dignity and respect? Does your legacy not mean a damn thing to you, Leno?
How is he losing to Kimmel?
He got more viewers than him.
Or can’t you read?
And he’s just supposed to leave and get off the state even when he’s still the number one host just because it inconveniences you to see him or know that he’s having success?
Fremen,
Total viewers mean nothing. What matter is the demo and households. Jay is second in the former and last in the latter.
I already asked you:
What the EFF do you mean “total viewers means nothing”?
It’s a dimwitted way to respond to the FACT that more people still watched Jay last night than watched Kimmel.
That’s like saying that scoring the most points in a game means nothing with regards to winning the game.
Come on.
Dude, don’t embarrass yourself like that.
And as for “demo”, Conan was also routinely beating both Letterman and Leno( his 10pm numbers) in the much coveted 18-49 demo.
Where is he now?
Especially if “total viewers (really) means nothing” as you so moronically put it, and considering the fact that that’s the exact area he was consistently coming in last (even behind Nightline for crying out loud)
Total viewer don’t matter.
My as.5
If total viewers mattered, shows like Harry’s Law wouldn’t have gotten the ax and Dancing With The Stars would command much higher ad prices.
Advertisers care only about the demo.
WOW!!! One could take this one of two ways. Either Jimmy has become much more interesting,or,it just goes to show how lame & outdated both Leno & Letterman have become-personally I suspect it’s the latter. Also could be a bit of the curiosity factor. Probably some people sampling Jimmy at the earlier timeslot/wanting to see his first show at 11:35. I wish Jimmy all the best, but,as always the real measure of success will be how his number against Leno/Letterman hold up longterm. Good luck to him.
I suspect many samplers of Kimmel’s first 11:35 show were less than impressed. The lame obviously fake desk bit, getting a haircut, focusing on his activities with Jennifer over the holidays. Boring, self-serving, and hardly “entertaining.”
With the Kimmel move, NBC Late Night is now the new #3!
Actually, it’s the continuing no.!
Yet another Kimmel fanboy who can’t read.
Kimmel will end his week of fame next week. His ratings are not really very good for so much hyping. Didn’t appear Leno or Letterman made any adjustments in their guests, very routine.
Pretty weak for a “premiere”. Just sayin’…
Not a premiere. Just an earlier time slot. At least Kimmel is somewhat young and can attract a growing audience. The other two old goats need to exist stage left. What a fall for Leno, to finish third in households. And Jay’s total viewers – 3 million? It was 7 million a few years ago.
Read again, Hard Truth. Leno beat Kimmel. And when he was forced to move to 10:00 PM, Leno’s first show in the earlier time slot garnered 17 MILLION viewers.
No he didn’t.
You’ve got to be more specific. What did I get wrong?
Nothing Says Cutting-Edge Comedy More Than Kimmel’s 1980′s Pose Of A Plumber Showing His Butt-Crack On The Cover Of A Magazine From The 1970′s.
Sounds impressive–until we’re reminded what Johnny Carson’s ratings were, even when he was waning. In the early 1970s, even the Joey Bishop show with co-host Regis Philbin pulled in nine or ten million viewers a night.
Well we didn’t have the internet or cable TV back then either.
Get ‘em Oldtimer! LOL
and people don’t wait in overnight lines to get an iPhone from the Apple store.
the internet should help his #s as clips get distributed and spurs people to watch on TV (in order to tweet it). Otherwise, any decline this week will be a good sign it’s preimere’s luck: seriously there was nothing funny on all 3 shows last night. So it’s off to The Colbert Report…
Amazing! Congrats to everyone at JKL!
Why didn’t you compare also to night line
Total viewers mean NOTHING. The demo and households are what matter and Jimmy won those.
How did he win the demo when he was number 2 out of the 3
Yes, just because Leno won the total viewers, suddenly they mean nothing.
That’s hilarious.
And keep banking on that 18-49 demo.
Same thing that Conan fans were banking on (and which, to be fair, he consistently used to beat both Leno and Letterman in) right before they lost interest and drifted back to Jon Stewart and Colbert.
Kimmel will be back to a steady and consistent #3 once that happens which should be in a matter of weeks.
Freman,
Why the big attitude and the angry attitude in all your posts? (The ones you sign your name to and the ones where you sign a different name.) It’s pretty obvious you either work for Jay or you are Jay. If you’re just a fan, get some help, you take this shit way too seriously. And if you’re not, get some help too. You sound like your job depends on who watches which show.
Do you really think Jay has the time to read comments on Deadline.com? That’s hilarious.
I don’t know who you’re talking about but I ALWAYS sign my posts as Fremen and if you do detect a mocking tone to my posts with a little hint of derision mixed with a smidgen of dismissiveness, then you would be correct.
I have little regard and respect for people who have little regard and respect for FACTS – such as the FACT that Kimmel got his ass kicked by Leno last Night after weeks of talking smack about him.
Kimberly, it’s also impressive that we have more than 2 channels in 2012. Something they didn’t in the early 1970′s… How could you possibly compare the two?
Didn’t The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien debut to a 7.0? And we all know what happened there…. Talk to us in 4 weeks Cha-chi.
I like Kimmel, watched him fairly regularly at midnight, but this 11:35 premiere was not only nothing special but I turned it off after the painfully unfunny Jennifer Aniston destroys the obviously fake desk bit.
After all that bitching and complaining and he still couldn’t beat Jay! Serves him right. Pathetic, untalented loser.
Um, Leno finished first in both households and 18-49.
I like Kimmel, but find him unbearable when he bashes Leno, for no good reason. That being said Kimmel still took second place to Leno. Kimmel took a lot of the major cities, thats why it looked like he won early this morning. But when the country’s data was released, Leno won it. As Josef Adalian of Vulture points out “Jay Leno still has pull in the heartland”.
Conan scored a 7.2 his first night at 11:30… just saying, it’s a marathon
All the anti-Kimmel/pro Leno stuff on here sounds like it was written by the same dude. Same misspelled words, broken syntax and hyper hostility.
Jimmy Fallon is the future of late night. The guy transcends television and what happens on his show – whether it be a song, a dance, an interview – becomes conversation the next day at work. None of the other three can say that.
Just when I thought I couldn’t see something more ridiculous than a Kimmel fanboy, a Fallon fanboy shows up and throws the room into fits of uproarious hysterical mocking laughter.
And by the way, it’s FREMEN here.
F-R-E-M-E-N
And no misspellings or broken syntax in to be found anywhere here.
The jury is still out on the “hyper hostility” (probably more like hyper sensitivity on your part and laughably thin skin at seeing your heroes get laughed at in their abortive attempts to beat Leno in the ratings race).
Fallon’s not going to be hosting the Tonight Show for a long long time.
And by the time he thinks his time has come, NBC will probably turn to somebody who’s ACTUALLY FUNNY to fill in for Jay’s role.
Jimmy Fallon will beat all timeslots and hosts when he fills Jay’s shoes…
No matter how many comments I read here or anywhere regarding Leno and Letterman as “outdated”, no one ever seems to have a suggestion for their replacements. And please, don’t say Fallon should take over for Leno. I won’t buy it.
“Hey Leno what goes around comes around”. “Karma’s a bitch”!
