EXCLUSIVE: Hot off directing the pilot for the highest-rated new fall series, drama Revolution, Jon Favreau is set to direct another NBC pilot, comedy About A Boy. The single-camera comedy, from Friday Night Lights and Parenthood executive producer Jason Katims, is based on the Nick Hornby book and the 2002 movie. Written and executive produced by Emmy-winner Katims, About A Boy follows the relationship between a bachelor man-child and the young boy who moves in next door with his kooky single mother. Katims’ head of development, Michelle Lee, serves as producer on the pilot, which is from Katims’ True Jack Prods; Universal TV; and Working Title and Tribeca Prods, the companies that produced the Hugh Grant-starring feature. Favreau serves as co-executive producer on the JJ Abrams/Eric Kripke NBC drama Revolution. On the feature side, the Iron Man director recently executive produced The Avengers and is now exec producing the upcoming Iron Man 3.

Good to see NBC attracting real talent. The show sounds promising and if they can pull it off could work well with Michael J Fox and possibly the Sean Hayes project for a revamp their comedies. It’s just brutal having to fill up hours with the horrible crap that is 1600 Penn and new Normal.
What was weird to me about reading this pilot is it’s just the movie. Like, exactly the same. if I’ve already seen the movie, why do I want to see it re-enacted for a pilot???
because then you can see it stretched over months. or years. or days.
Yes, wasn’t this already a really decent movie with Hugh Grant, Toni Collette and Rachel Weisz that came out about 10 years back? From the British novel? I think the issue here is that the networks don’t really want to appeal anyone over 25, and with half a brain…
yeah it was a good movie and a good book. who cares? it was a decade ago and is it really that criminal to want to appeal to new audiences? by the way, both parenthood and friday night lights were complete reinventions of the originals that brought totally new characters, new stories, new depth. if anyone knows his way around this kind of thing, its katims.
love this pairing. favreau’s best when he’s doing character based comedies. glad he’s returning to it. and katims script is by far the best comedy this season. one to watch…
Any word on who’s starring in this? I heard rumors about Justin Kirk. I think he would be great, but after Animal Practice (which I liked) I don’t think he is in everybody’s good graces.
Hooray! Favreau is great, I will definitely give this a chance.
What a package — just pick up to series already!
This is the second crack at a pilot based on About A Boy. There was one made ten years or so ago that starred Patrick Dempsey.
I hear George Wendt is starring. Perfect casting!
“Kooky” single mother? I guess that’s one way to describe suicidal depression.
This is the biggest problem with the TV biz. These ideas make great pilots but can’t go for 100 episodes. Blah.
