EXCLUSIVE: Joseph Gordon-Levitt will make his next film Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, the Dimension Films sequel to the stylish noir drama that Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller are directing based on Miller’s graphic novel. I’m told that Gordon-Levitt will play the role of Johnny, a part that the filmmakers originally offered to Johnny Depp. He’s one of the core characters in overlapping story lines that feature returning players like Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, along with newcomers that include Dennis Haysbert. Other tough guy actors will be added, with Gangster Squad‘s Josh Brolin among the potential names I’ve heard.
At the same time, the canoodling that was going on between Gordon-Levitt and Marvel Studios over the lead in Guardians Of The Galaxy has come to an end. He won’t be starring in the film and Marvel is evaluating its other candidates. Sin City 2 is already shooting, and Gordon-Levitt will mix in his work as he moves through a busy month.
He’ll be at the Sundance Film Festival where his feature directorial debut, Don Jon‘s Addiction, makes its world premiere. Gordon-Levitt also wrote the script and stars with Scarlett Johansson. He’s also hosting the Sundance Awards ceremony that closes the upcoming festival in Park City, Utah. Gordon-Levitt is coming off a strong 2012, where he starred in The Dark Knight Rises and ended the year with Looper and Lincoln. He’s repped by WME.

Why is frank miller co-directing? We saw what happened with the spirit. Rodriguez is actually a director
Miller co-directed the first one and I think it turned out pretty damn well…for a Rodriguez movie that is.
I’m pretty sure Miller just got the director credit since it was his comic, and he wanted to keep it as faithful as possible. All the directing and the style of shooting was Rodriguez. Miller just stole the style for the spirit cause that was the only way he knew how to shoot a film.
No, he actually participated, you can check behind the scenes of sin city movies in youtube if you like
He gets a co-director credit because RR follows his comics to the tee. He isn’t directing… it’s an empty credit he gets for doing the comic.
That’s great news. JGL’s star is really rising.
Bruce Willis and JGL in the same movie again: hell yeah!
well that’s a monumental step down from Depp. was looking forward to him playing a part in the sin city universe for a long time… hope it’s nothing too challenging and JGOD serves it well by looking cool and posing.
um step down? Depp hasn’t stepped out of his comfort zone in years…name the last good movie he’s done, I’ll wait. JGL has been evolving as an actor and his choices have reflected that. He may not be as good yet, but he consistently tries new things while Depp continues to trot out Jack Sparrow.
jack, i suppose doing a musical (Sweeny Todd) his Jump Street cameo and the under appreciated Rum Diary were all the same safe role?
Wow, did you actually just list a CAMEO as a new type of role? You’re an idiot….Sweeney Todd was just another dark, tortured Burton role. Rum Diary was Fear and Loathing all over again.
Try again….maybe put some effort into it this time…
yes “wow” you idiot. that is why actors do cameos. so they get a chance to try something funny or new or have fun in a genre they may not get to participate in normally. it is very difficult to find feature length films that allow a lead actor to stretch or try things. especially at Depp’s level. its funny to hear all this trashing of him doing the same type of stuff when it took him a lot of years and a lot of balls to be getting away with what he does the way he wants to do it in major tentpole movies. if you take off the stupid white face paint burton plasters him with in every film and actually think you will ALL realize he’s playing with a much wider variety of characteristics than most of the actors working today. of all the actors to say don’t have variety… Depp? please. the movies may not always turn out great, but he’s the man. huge bummer he couldn’t do sin city. hope it’s not a sign he is passing up the smaller films for the bigger more time consuming ones that aren’t as good.
Actually yes they were in his comfort zone, as it was the same style and mood of acting he keeps doing. Its always weird dark and quirky, he can’t seem to step out of that role. Or away from Tim Burton
Sweeney Todd, while a great film, was almost six years ago, and the 21 Jump Street cameo (while hilarious) was all of 3 minutes of a film. I think Jack was probably referring to the more recent Depp movies such as Alice in Wonderland, Rango, Pirates 4, Dark Shadows and (from what the trailers look like) The Lone Ranger, where the characters all appear to be VERY similiar in nature.
In Sin City he would probably seem like those characters mixed with his role in Rodriguez’s Once Upon A Time.
Rum Diary was a boring movie and not that different in the way he acted it really. Jump street 2.5 min cameo is not anything. Sweeny todd was 5-6 yrs ago now. Otherwise we have Pirates 1-4 New lone ranger alice in wonderland and charlie and the choclate factory that make up like 85% of his movies since pirates 1. So Depp is getting old in his style that he is forced into now. JGL has been good since 3rd rock from the sun.
Everyone should watch Bully with JGL great movie
Brittany Murphy will be missed in this sequel.
This film is a Prequel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sin_City#Chronology Only the opening scene of the last movie takes place before the events in this film.
The only thing that doesn’t excite me is Alba’s return (just go CGI with “Nancy” –it’d fit the altered reality look of the film really well).
JGL is a helluva actor from “The Lookout” thru TDKR & “Looper”.
The 1st “Sin City” was a blast to watch. It played better on DVD when you were able to play the separate stories all the the through minus the cross cutting between them. Hopefully Rodriguez will opt do it this way for this feature. That all said, I’m glad this long delayed film is going to see the dark of the cinema & I can’t wait to see it. (“A Dame To Kill For” is very cool story.)
The rum diary?
Basically a much more sober Fear and Loathing.
Wait, I don’t get it.
Rodriguez only gave him co-directing credit because he used Millers comic book panes as storyboards and to compose the shots. He was so faithful to the panes that he felt that Miller basically composed the shots himself. If Miller had actually directed the actors I would be surprised.
Miller pretty much only got a lead(!) directing credit because the movie was so much like his comics, and he was on set the whole time.
He’s a codirector because RR insisted he be given a credit as codirector because the film was made almost shot for shot with the comics Miller wrote.
Frank must have it in his contract that he be co-director. He’s a terrible director. Stick to the comic books, please. It’s really sad
@Chris: And Michael Clarke Duncan too.
He has only a small role in Sin City, but his caracter is an important one in the universe. Especially, when the storyline with Josh Hartnett and Alexis Bledel would be continued.
Only Hollywood Reporter seems to be reporting so far that JGL is fielding an offer to star in the new Godzilla.
Captain jack is a character he has played for 4 films, working with Tim Burton is like breathing for him and Rum Diaries was a project he was playing with since shortly after fear and loathing. I’m sure that cameo was a real stretch for him as an actor.
He is a great actor, and has earned to right to be particular, but lets not suggest he’s really working to hone his craft these days.
Miller would only let the movie be made if he was allowed to direct it. The spilt credit compromise was the solution.
Wrong. Rodriguez shot the whole thing shot for shot, to mirror the comic book. So technically Frank Miller stole nothing.
Only franchise fans will see this film. Depp’s done his time in Indie/small budget hell. I see all Johnny’s films and am actually glad I can now cross this one off my list.
Those self-indulgent series of quirks in place of character aren’t really worth $300 million.
