EXCLUSIVE: The derby to land the lead role of Starlord Peter Quill in Guardians Of The Galaxy has gotten even more interesting. Marvel Studios has added Joseph Gordon-Levitt to the list of actors they are considering for what is seen as its next major franchise launch.
Deadline reported that Marvel had made test deals with Zero Dark Thirty‘s Joel Edgerton, Boardwalk Empire‘s Jack Huston, Cloud Atlas‘ Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace (who has roles in both Lincoln and The Hobbit), and Eddie Redmayne from Les Miserables. More recently, Zachary Levi was identified as a candidate.
I’m not sure if Gordon-Levitt has been offered the role and nobody would comment, but he’s in the mix. He is just coming out of the superhero movie The Dark Knight Rises, which left him in an intriguing position as Chris Nolan’s film trilogy concluded.
James Gunn is directing the film, and Quill is the Guardians leader who is the offspring of a human mother and an alien father. Guardians Of The Galaxy first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1969 but didn’t get its own series until the 1990s. Quill leads a group of alien superheros who team to protect the solar system from an evil alien race. The good guys are from the future, and another dimension. In the comics, the Guardians worked with The Avengers, so there should be opportunities to use Marvel’s big franchises to help launch the new one. That gives Disney a deep space companion to its plans to resuscitate Star Wars.
There has also been mention of interest in Garrett Hedlund, James Marsden (he already played Cyclops in X-Men, but then again Chris Evans played Fantastic Four‘s Human Torch before landing Captain America), and Edgerton’s Animal Kingdom co-star Sullivan Stapleton.

Isn’t he also Batman?
You’re a lawyer and yet you don’t know how to use google to find out a simple answer to your simpleton question?

Actually, having seen the movie… it’s still kind of vague. (Does the name “Nightwing” mean anything to you?)
robin is not “vague”

Then why did you even bother asking the question – presuming you’re the joker who went and just changed his handle and asked it in the first place?
People should be posting under their real names on here – instead of constantly changing their pseudonyms as often as they change their underwear.

Different fictional universe altogether.
I hope he stays away from this project.
Why? Cause it would make this project cooler than it already is? You don’t wanna see JGL with downey in the Avengers? Idiot
No I don’t, I’d rather JGL go on and work with original projects that can best utilize his acting abilities then starring in big dumb action movies based on established properties. They may be good big dumb action movies, but they’re still big dumb action movies.
Such a sad, small mind. He’s an actor, this could be a good paying job. He’s talented and likeable, and has many enjoyable films building under his belt. He’s done small and big films, and I presume he will continue to do so. This suggestive opinion of yours is not a good one.
@ELGorcho – Come on now man big dumb action movies, get the stick out your you what and loosen up a little man. Who wants to be in serious boring s….all the time. You ever heard of loosening up and just having fun sometimes, damn. And if the movies are well made and entertaing than it’s never an issue whatsoever.
Guardians Of The Galaxy? Please. JGL and his team are obviously using this ‘news’ to try and leverage a better deal for another ‘studio project’ so the real question here is what’s the other project?
There is no way ol’ JoGoL would sign one of those arcane seven picture deals that Disney/Marvel make all their talent sign. And if he did…., ? Well if this is what he’s ‘reduced to’ then Hollywood and the studio system is in worse shape than I thought.
the war has started….how about adding Robin/Batman to the Marvel films?
at least we will be saved from the fanboys arguing which universe is better.
Lol hopefully JGL doesn’t sign on. This movie is going to be as bad as Thor.
If you read the comic, or knew anything about the Guardians, then you probably wouldn’t be saying that.
Thor was Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes with a 77% fresh rating and 80% of users liking it. I’d hardly call that bad.
I should hope so! Thor was excellent!
Haha, well said.
Should call it “Rise of the Legends of the Guardians of the Galaxy”, just to avoid any confusion.
He won’t take this. DC won’t want him in a competing superhero movie. This is simply agent maneuvering to lock him in for the Justice League movie.
really? Halle Berry played Storm in X-Men and Catwoman. Ryan Renolds played “Deadfool” in Wolverine, Hannibal King in Blade 3 and Hal Jordan in Green Lantern. Chris Evans played Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four, Captain America and also played as Jensen in The Losers (Vertigo Comics, an offshoot of DC). Natalie Portman played Jane Foster in Thor and also Evey Hammond in V for Vendetta (Vertigo)
I agree with a few of the other posters, my guess is that the fanboy backlash against him playing Batman in the JL movie left DC reeling and his agents are trying to leverage or save face. Brilliant actor that he is, JGL should never ever ever play Batman. He would be a great Flash or solid Green Lantern, but not Bats. If booking this takes him out of the Bats discussion, I am all in.
I still think this movie is insane. This is a property literally no one outside of fairly in-depth comic fans have heard of (I’m smack in the middle of the target demo and I had never heard of this property/group until it was announced). If the history of comic book movies have proven anything it’s that you can’t just depend on fanboys to make a movie a financial success – it has to be a property the wider audience is at least somewhat familiar with to draw them in as well.
@jer – You are exactly right, that’s why it’s up to Marvel to sell this property which i think they will and they’re also as i’m assuming will connect this film as much to “The Avengers” as they can. If they’re successful in selling this film to the public it can definantly be a hit, but that’s what they must do.
He’s so small though…
he is kind of one of the most self aware, mediocre actors out there. much rather see him flaunting his good loons in something like this than choking on a well written dramatic part.
Mediocre? He’s one of the best out of his generation, he’s very versatile, he can play a male prostitute in one move and then go and play a man dealing with cancer.
As for this, I think his people are trying to do this to get a better deal out of warner Bros, does anyone remember when Nolan said he couldn’t talk about the cameo in Man Of Steel?
versatile? yeah right.
OMG!! Some people are SO dimwitted! No JGL character in The Dark Knight Rises is not Batman nor was it ever meant to be interpreted that way. Nolan even came out and said, “the ending was meant to be symbolic. It was meant to make the point that ANYONE can be batman and that there will always be someone who rises to the occasion and fights for the greater good. We are all Batman, we all have the ‘The Batman” inside of us. That need to do what is right and fight for it.” THAT IS ALL. It was symbolic! It was never ment to mean that he’s the new Batman. Don’t be so simple minded people please. Think outside the box a little.
Yeah, what he said.

yeah.. now I’m guessing that the whole JLA rumor also came from his agent/team. Clearly they want to use these rumors as leverage to push JGL as a new batman and/or to keep the momentum he built last year.
seriously?
I mean really?
Well, okay this is another one I can safely skip. Psst, this guy maybe great in somethings but he’s like 135 pounds soaking wet. Get real.
Wil,
No one is being simple minded, the JGL Justice League rumors have been swirling for 5+ weeks. I agree with you that is what Nolan intended with DKR but it doesn’t mean WB hasn’t considered the notion of finding any continuity it can from Nolan’s films. Someone floated that rumor be it JGL’s representation or WB to test the idea.
I wouldn’t consider any of the Marvel movies great (Avengers aside) but they are solid entertaining movies and I think what raises each of the movies up is that their casting has been perfect or nearly so.
JGL would have been perfect to play Peter Parker he’s the same size as Tobey Maguire but I can’t see him as Bruce Wayne. Spider-Man can be the size of a gymnast but Batman has to be at least six feet tall if not 6’3″ and this ongoing campaign to make the world think JGL is a superstar and a future superhero is ridiculous. Let him do Guardians of the Galaxy if it keeps him out of JLA then it’s a good move for everyone.
As long as Brian Bendis isn’t writing the script or a consultant on this film, I am semi-interested with extreme caution.
Joe wouldn’t have to work another day in his life with the small fortune he’s earned from 3rd Rock and his other work. Joe is one of the most articulate and inspiring people out in la la land, he had chosen remarkable roles, and will continue to do so. I sincerely hope he declines this franchise, but if he does not, I’ll put my faith in his decision.
Um justice league the movie is having a bunch of no name actors in it. And secondly Ryan Reynolds plays Green Lantern and Deadpool on the Wolverine movie plus getting his own Deadpool movie. So where is your arguement that DC won’t want him in a competing superhero movie? Did he sign a contract or something? I don’t think so seeing that he won’t do another “Batman” type movie without Nolan and Nolan said himself he is passing Batman to the next generation of film makers
Does The Mask starring Jim Carrey ring any bells? Kick Ass, the indie comic turn mainstream movie? How about Wanted? The Crow, that very commercial comic? If it’s good, it will be fine.
You are in the target demo???? And never heard of guardians of the galaxy!???? Pttttooey sir!!!
LOL SO HARD @ “The Rise of the Legends of the Guardians of the Galaxy!”
I’m surprised Nathan Fillion isn’t on that list to play star lord
