ESPN programming executive Juan José Alfonso has been named VP Drama Development for ABC Studios. He will report to SVP Drama Development Michael McDonald. Alfonso comes from sister Disney company ESPN, where he was VP of Program Development, overseeing all international original content, including documentaries, scripted series, studio shows and web content. This included El Diez, ESPN International’s first-ever scripted series, as well as a number of documentary series, including Capitales del Fútbol, Heroics and La Liga Confidencial.

I’m sorry; whhhhat? I’ve seen it all. Now ABC’s REALLY throwing whatever will stick at the wall to capture the male demo. But I say ‘God bless”. It actually could be interesting: I have visions of arm wrestling-themed procedurals and prime-time “Pumping Iron”. Kidding kidding. But bravo to him on what sounds like a job well done at ESPN. Serious: good-wishes for this talented guy.
So the DEVELOPMENT has been the real problem all this time?! Silly me! I worry though. “Nothing changes if nothing changes”….Paul Lee will either pass on, or cancel, everything that is compelling and worth nurturing; while he continues to simultaneously spit on and court female viewers. (Canceling a medium-specific genre steeped in loyal viewership and history– soaps– that at least reaches SOME younger females with buying power; while sticking by that prime time “Murder She Wrote” demo with the twice almost cancelled “Body of Proof” show in the next article below this one.) It’s a mystery, wrapped in a riddle, inside a mystery to me— I mean seriously folks: where are his shareholder-’parents’?!
Haha ABC hates women, I think. But shit, here I thought ABC was a bunch of bigots! They hired someone bilingual for an exec position and not a supporting actor? Jesus C…I’m speechless!
Well said!!! I’m sure THE ‘person in charge of casting’ approves whole heartedly with the diversity EOO requirements met…. but surely that ‘person’s’ head must’ve exploded when it was revealed the new-hire was male! –the ABC creative/casting dept heads’ worst nightmare come-true!
Congratulations Mr. Alfonso. Wish you all the best in your role— as what will inevitably be the latest stooge to take the fall by next quarter…. anyone but the guy who calls the shots seems to be the problem there… like going through the looking-glass into the Mad Hatters tea party. You’re bearing the media-theory label: ‘burden of representation’ at ABC—-for us males, that is.
I hope I am wrong, but I can’t see a programming exec. from ESPN being able to find dramas that are going to attractive to both the male and female audience. And even if he is able to promote and develop such shows, the problem and ultimate decision still lies at the head of programming for ABC. Most of the current programming on ABC as posted by WhiteMale: the ABC anti-christ statement, makes no attempt to appeal to or include straight white men at all. ABC programming as it exists today is a world of gay of lesbian white men and women for the most part. The writing, and the characters, both young and old, if not written as homosexual, they are most certainly androgenous. All one has to do is go night by night and look at the makeup of ABC’s primetime programming. SAD STATE. But goodluck to the ESPN exec and his hunt for solid ABC dramas. LOL.
