Party Down alum Ken Marino and The Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi round out the cast of the NBC comedy pilot The Gates. Based on the British series, The Gates is an adult ensemble comedy set at the front gates of an elementary school drop-off and revolves around the parents, school staff and 15-minute social minefield they navigate at the beginning and end of each school day. The show centers on type-A Helen (Kathleen Rose Perkins), who just moved to town with her husband Mark (Marino) and their 8-year-old daughter for Helen’s big new job. Mark is described as a loveable, sweet, well-meaning, puppy-dog of a guy, a type B, or C, maybe even D to his wife’s type-A personality. Since he owns a construction business, he’s got a more flexible schedule than Helen and is at their daughter’s school more than his wife. Mandvi will play another dad at the school, a super-driven, competitive Yale-educated lawyer who’s one of these comedically intense guys who pushes his kids way too hard. The Gates, written by Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith and directed by Marc Buckland, received an early pilot green light in December.
Marino, repped by Principato-Young Entertainment and IFA, stars in and co-executive produces Adult Swim’s Childrens Hospital. He also has Web series Burning Love on Yahoo, from Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Prods, and co-stars in the Sundance competition film In A World, written and directed by fellow Childrens Hospital co-star Lake Bell. Mandvi, repped by ICM Partners, will next be seen in Movie 43.

Vinnie Van Lowe forever! Aasif is also awesome.
Why are all these great actors (Perkins, Marino, Mandvi) agreeing to be a part of this pilot, which (based on plot) sounds horrific?
the script is pretty awful as well. It’s basically a new version of Up All Night, which well, we all know was borderline horrendous.
man if the script is that bad then everyone involved – actors agents studio network must be pretty DUMB! why aren’t you running things! please fix hollywood :0)
So are you saying then that all those parties mentioned above have never gotten behind a bad script? And that anyone who says a script is bad is a hater? With your logic I can only imagine you never won at Clue.
And is a remake of a failed British show.
Because that worked so well for Free Agents.
NBC never gave Free Agents a chance. They should have put it on Thursday instead of Shitney. I really liked that show, and if I ever get around to buying Hulu Plus, I will definitely rewatch all 8 episodes.
and the office…
Perhaps they are doing it for MONEY.
Because it’s a broadcast network comedy series, and that means network-level $, and network-level profile. Even if it bombs, it’s worth the chance.
that assif guy looks very serious
Mandvi is terrible – he proves over & over again on The Daily Show that he can’t perform comedy. He consistently comes across as somebody who just thinks the lines he is reading are funny. Marino, on the other hand… I want to dip my balls in it!
Marino is a great actor. He was outstanding on Party Down.
I sent a lot of talent to audition for this project and with the cast settled I have two observations. First, the script for the pilot is INCREDIBLY BLAND. I get they are setting the stage but they really need to punch up the writing in the post-pilot episodes. With that said, the casting of Ken Marino is inspired. Hopefully the writers take advantage of his comedic sensibility…might just save this show from an early cancellation.
