While there is still no official third-season pickup for Lena Dunham‘s Girls, she has confirmed the long-expected renewal of her HBO comedy series. “We’re starting season three at the end of March,” she told Alec Baldwin on his podcast. “I’m so excited.” HBO has been preparing for a third season of Girls for a couple of months. I hear it closed a new overall deal with executive producer Jenni Konner to return as co-showrunner alongside creator/star/executive producer Dunham and has been assembling a writing team, with Paul Simms expected to replace Bruce Eric Kaplan as co-executive producer as Kaplan is busy working on his HBO pilot. According to Dunham, Girls is taking over the stage used by Baldwin’s departing 30 Rock at Silvercup Studios.

On the same night it won Golden Globes for best comedy series and best comedy actress (Dunham) earlier this month, Girls opened its second season to 866,000 viewers, down slightly from its series premiere last year.

yeaah even more $$$ for lena dunham! Isn’t life great when nepotism is at work??
Do you even understand the word “nepotism”?
You really think her previously largely unknown artist mother led her to succeed at selling, and marketing, and getting critical acclaim for an HBO television show? Man, oh, man, some people need to reach out to club others to soothe their own ______________ (fill in the blank).
Her mom went to high school with her agent. Her agent mentored her network head, who’s a fan of her mother’s art. How’s that for nepotism?
Pretty distant and strained, actually.
You don’t actually work in this town, do ya M.?
What part of “It’s not What You Know, but Who You Know” Does nobody understand around here?
RIGHT ON THE MONEY HERE.
Are we still crying nepotism over this? Hollywood has always run on nepotism in one form or another. Why are we taking everything out on Lena Dunham?
Because she embodies all the worst qualities of Millennials.
So your amazing pilot must’ve been the one passed over for her show.
More a statement on the poor state of HBO’s development slate than the ‘success’ of “Girls.” Looks like Showtime will be the ultimate winner with the renewal of this show.
Ugh. Quite simply it’s just an awful show that very few people watch and that the media adores.
I wish, wish, wish this could be sent directly to the inboxes of all those who disparaged the premiere and predicted this show’s demise just days ago on this site. Congratulations to Lena. I do not know her, but I’m glad to see her succeeding, as I think she’s got a unique and worthy voice.
The third season was rumored to be picked up before the second season premiered. This is not indicative of the show’s ratings as much as it’s critical cachet. Which HBO just bought more of with the Golden Globes.
Disagree with “unique and worthy voice”; happy for her success and wish her well. My time will come, just gotta keep working.
I’d prefer it go directly into the trash. Actually if the show could simply go to an on demand site where it’s legion of followers could watch it and leave the rest of us alone that would be good. See I don’t begrudge you watching and even enjoying it… just quit telling the rest of us how ‘amazing’ it is, I’ve seen a few eps and it ain’t for me. I think it’s awful.
Actually, wishing it could go directly in the trash is pretty much the definition of begrudging everyone watching it. I think the key to all this spittle is the post above yours. “My time will come, just gotta keep working.” It’s all about people who just can’t seem to conceive of this young woman, who’s got at least an iota of an idea how to key into an audience while remaining steadfast in her views, usurping their own ambitions (which have probably already been contorted into pretzels in hope of scoring with one network or another).
In short: If you all really don’t begrudge anything, stop spending so much time railing in complaint of the damn show. Watch something else. Or, write something else.
@anon, Girls has viewers and is a cumulative hit. It’s just that most of its audience chooses to watch it OnDemand/DVR/HBO Go. The ratings go up to about 4 million when the cumulative numbers. HBO doesn’t care about the live viewers because it doesn’t accept advertising.
You’ve completely missed the point. And you may want to re-think the statemtent that HBO ‘doesn’t care about live viewers.’ Furthermore, the show does not drive subscriptions to HBO. Certainly not like ‘The Sopranos’ or ‘Six Feet Under’ was able to do. The term ‘cumulative hit’ is a good one. It’s very forgiving.
What a hard fall for HBO. HBO use to have shows with millions of viewers, now it settles for 300,000. Kind of reminds me of how hard NBC has fallen.
HBO is in awards business. and guess what, this show wins awards. How is “Go On” doing?
Awards don’t pay bills, Smarty, viewers do. With movies easily found online these days, it’s original series that drive subscriptions. Aside from True Blood and Game of Thrones, what hits does HBO have anymore? Compare their numbers to Stars and Showtime, and you’ll notice a disturbing trend.
@darkerstill, few live viewers. It’s cumulative viewership is huge. Ratings are not always a reflection of quality. Mad Men’s 1st 2 years, it averaged 900,000 viewers. Friday Night Lights on NBC averaged about 4 million, which is about the same as 900,000 on cable is to NBC.
The elites will keep propping Dunham up to prove to the rest of ignorant rubes how smart they are. It’s all b.s. Nothing to see here, move along, move along….
Completely agree. Notice that most of the discussion about ‘Girls’ is about Lena Dunham and whether this show is worthy of the praise it gets from, well, the Golden Globes and older people trying to be hip, along with the affected NY snob.
Meanwhile, shows like ‘Homeland’ or ‘Dexter’ are discussed in terms of story and character.
She’s hot.
Oh Yes She Is
yay.
I really do not watch the show and I do not understand all the praise it gets because what i have seen of the show its not to special BUT one thing I do admire about the show is that Lena’s character looks are nothing special which is the way most of us look in real life.
Speak for yourself, dude!
Put me in the Emperor has no clothes (literally) camp. Edgy, contemporary, just not interesting. Sex and the City had a lot of fans. Girls rules on buzz and the praise of a couple dozen critics.
Yes, by all means lets continue to shit-talk this 25 year old woman who is, at the very least, hard-working and smart, and never pretended to be anything else. Cant we go back to discussing something newer and more beneficial to the industry, like Beyonce’s lip synching?
Sooo…..
You think we shouldn’t shit-talk this 25 year old woman who is, at the very least, hard-working and smart, and never pretended to be anything else, just so that we can go back to shit-talking another 30-something year old woman who is, at the very least, hard-working, smart (if not talented) and never really pretended to be anything else?
I guess that makes sense.
Why any need to shit talk at all? People that talk shit are just unhappy with their own lives.
Smart? Hardly. My five year old could write better dialogue. Too bad her mommy isn’t as well connected as Lena’s, but that’s what I get for marrying for love.
“Smart? Hardly. My five year old could write better dialogue.” Yeah, but it’s too bad that you couldn’t, though.
Girls is alright in an “I-don’t-know-why-I-continue-to-watch-this-show-because-it’s-annoying-and-unrelatable” kind of way, but it definitely isn’t better than How to Make it in America. I wonder why it’s more popular and acclaimed?
Dear God,
I am also fat, untalented and annoying. Please let people decide that I am interesting because of the people I know or am related to. I promise that when am famous that I will be fake-humble and self-important and say “Oh my God” a lot. That’s a shout to you by the way!
Sincerely,
Fat Chick From Reseda
Get an obnoxiously tacky shoulder tattoo, and we’ll talk. Did your mom go to school with anyone halfway famous and successful? That helps a bit.
Didn’t realize so many people were family friends with uta partners
First Diablo Cody now Lena Dunham. Seems like a lot of peeps player-hate when a chick breaks big. When Damon and Affleck broke through as writers and got an Oscar right out the gate, everybody loved them. Even my girlfriend hates Diablo. Typical jealousy and showbiz schadenfreude, or sexism?
Are we not talking about the story values? Now you’ve proclaimed from high and changed the conversation. Lets get back on track. Can Lena and the writing team keep the show moving forward, and will the show characters finally grow up, or will they not? I believe this is what we should be wondering.
