Movie producer Lloyd Phillips, who was working on the Warner Bros/Legendary Superman reboot
Man Of Steel, died last night of a heart attack at his home in Malibu. Phillips was 63 and was born in South Africa but grew up in Auckland, NZ. The first New Zealander to win an Oscar, according to NZN, Phillips took home the statuette for his 1980 live-action short “The Dollar Bottom” — about a group of school boys who set up an insurance scheme against being caned by their teachers. Initial feature work afterward included
Nate And Hayes with Tommy Lee Jones,
Heart Of The High Country and
Ruby Cairo with Andie McDowell, Liam Neesen, and Viggo Mortensen. Phillips’ more recent Hollywood credits included
The Tourist with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds with Brad Pitt, Tom Tykwer’s The International with Clive Owen and Naomi Watts, Martin Campbell’s The Legend Of Zorro with Antonio Banderas, Beyond Borders (also directed by Campbell, starring Owen and Jolie), Vertical Limit (also directed by Campbell), The Edge with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin, and Terry Gilliam’s Twelve Monkeys with Pitt and Bruce Willis.

Deepest condolences to Beau and to Lloyd’s family. He was truly a class act and I had the pleasure of working with several times. A classy, gentle, kind man who was excellent at his job. This is a very sad loss.
To the beribed family and friend and acquaintances, I offer my love and will pray. The Man Of Steel had a head star So look up in th sky, It’s a ledgend in an an angel soul
My condolences. He was a really cool guy and always treated me like a big shot.
Probably the most prolific producer when it come detail re: budget and keeping a film on budget (if not under). Truly a good man, friend, coworker, who wasn’t afraid of telling one the truth or at least what he thought was the truth. (And that’s a rarity in this biz)
He was at the top if his game and will be missed deeply.
My deepest respect and condolences to Beau and to Lloyd’s family as well. All around class act.
A cool and well liked man. Great taste and love of life. Thoughts to Beau… RIP Lloyd. Hope heaven is a great location shoot…
So very sad to learn about the unexpected passing of our legendary producer, Lloyd Phillips. His career success speaks for itself, but what wasn’t always seen was how kind and generous he was to aspiring Kiwi film makers. He helped and inspired so many of us. You will be sorely missed, Lloyd, but never forgotten. Your legacy will live on! Arohanui to Beau, his family, and his close friends. RIP, Lloyd!
Lloyd was a mentor and a dear, dear friend. Words cannot express how sorely he will be missed.
Always so sad to hear it when someone leaves us too early. Clearly this was a good man who lived a good life. R.I.P, sir.
All the best to his family. God bless & may he rest in peace.
On Saturday, we lost an extraordinary colleague and I lost a trusted and valued friend. You were so full of life and humor when we spoke last week Lloyd. You will be missed but not forgotten.
Most people who knew Lloyd figured he would live to be at least 500. He had health issues constantly but his determination and incredible will ALWAYS prevailed and the assumption was that they would triumph in all things, especially something as trivial as mortality. So this is not only sad, it is shocking.
He was one of the most interesting, infuriating, hilarious and inspiring people I will ever know. Funny to see someone call him gentle. That, like him, is hilarious.
R.I.P. Lloyd. You will be missed by us. You were a champion of the industry and a great supporter of New Zealand. Many of us owe our international careers to you. – Thank you my friend.
A class act who loved the world and left it too soon.
So incredibly sad to hear of Lloyd’s passing. RIP, sir.
Lloyd was a closefriend and a great compadre on many projects together. We have lost an experienced film maker and a friend and mentor to many. He will be missed. God bless those he leaves behind. We are all better for having know him
I will miss you.
So sad to hear of Lloyd’s passing. He was a child of the world and he will be missed. Rest in Peace, Lloyd.
