EXCLUSIVE: For my part, Martin Scorsese can’t make enough movies. But he’s trying. Scorsese, who is completing The Wolf Of Wall Street with Leonardo DiCaprio, just held a reading of Steve Zaillian’s script at the Tribeca Film Center for The Irishman, the mob drama based on the Charles Brandt book I Heard You Paint Houses. The film is about mob hit man Frank Sheeran. Robert De Niro, who’ll play the lead character, was there, as was Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, also expected to take part. Project is set up at Paramount, but several financiers were there looking to invest.
I’m told by Scorsese’s camp that this is something Scorsese likes to do to make sure the picture is making proper progress. But they assure me he’s not making The Irishman next. Scorsese’s holding fast to his dream of making Silence the next film he directs. Scorsese, who almost had the Shusaku Endo book project together several times, is auditioning actors and is looking to start production on the film in mid-2014. Given De Niro’s resurgence in Silver Linings Playbook, how can we wait that long to see the actor get back in business with Scorsese?

Why has no one made a film on Lt. Charles Becker? First cop ever to be tried & executed. That script floating around town is pretty solid.
What’s it called and how do I get the script?
Check out the book Satan’s Circus. It is a detailed account ofthe Lt. Charles Becker affair.
I’m just going to say what everyone is thinking….3 Italian actors to star in “The Irishman”??? Curious.
DeNiro is half Irish.
Only the good half!
You got that right! Only the good half! Bing, Pow!
De Niro is half Irish and since it is a movie about an Irish hitman who works for the mob, it really does make sense…
Dazzling logic.
He can’t make enough movies? His problem is he makes too many movies. He makes twice as many as he should he’s in a constant hurry and some of his films would have been better off not getting made.
I demand he make Taxi Driver 2 when will that happen? I deserve to be revisited after all this time people want to know where I ended up. Get Bobby and make my sequel the people demand it. Sincerely,
The company who owns the rights to Silence sued Scorsese last year for breach of contract, so I’m wondering how he plans to do it. Besides Silence and The Irishman, he also wanna make the Sinatra-biopic. I doubt that he will enlarge his filmography any further than those three. He is not that young anymore, which makes it all the more problematic that he has to wait in order to get the fiances together.
Christ, The Irishman is such a boring, safe, bland, ball-less title.
The original title, I Heard You Paint Houses, is wonderfully mysterious and oddly creepy.
The Irishman sounds like unimaginative Hollywood BS. I really hope someone on the project comes to their senses and ditches the vanilla name.
I’d love to know who else participated in the reading? I heard Harvey Keitel was originally part of the line-up.. Will DiCaprio take part too?
I don’t know about Silence, but the actors that are going to play in “The Irishman”(De Niro/Pacino/Pesci) are not getting any younger. Scorsese should just put Silence aside until that lawsuit clears up and go straight to work The Irishman.
Anyone who knew Frank Sheeran will tell you his love
was breaking thumbs and bragging about it over a plate
of pasta at Broadway Eddie’s.
He had a delusional view of reality and loved BS; he
was an informant and the worst backstabber you never
want to meet.
DiCaprio will not be part of it since he said that he’ll take a ‘long break’ -> http://www.thenews.com.pk/article-84336-Leonardo-DiCaprio-to-take-long-break
I would love to see “The Irishman” happen (the original title is far better), i’m really afraid that this picture gets delayed too long, the actors aren’t young anymore. But i’m also looking foreward to “Silence”.
Scorcese. DeNiro. Organized crime. Let’s face it – we’re interested.
If anyone plays the role of Frank Sheeran it would be well worth considering someone on the order of actor Clancy Brown ( i.e. “Shawshank Redemption” guard “Byron Hadley”). Not only did Sheeran’s mien instill fear in the hardest of the Philadelphia underworld, “Irish” was also 6′-4″. With all due respect for Mr. DiNiro, I don’t believe he could convincingly portray the role of Jimmy Hoffa’s “right-hand man” and enforcer–at least for those of us who saw Sheeran in person.
They already had another movie called ” The Irishman”,
use the other title. Someone should make a movie
about the couple that robbed Mafia social clubs
In NYC in the late 80′s, only to be rubbed out later.
Are you guys serious? Who cares about the content.. i would watch a movie with Pacino Pesci & DeNiro for 3 hours, all dialogue,no action.. they should make a movie about the Mob Cops.. those 2 nypd detectives in the mid 80s who were doing unsanctioned hits and were on the mafia payroll..Now that would be a great movie..
I have read and own a copy of the book. Lots of questions. I’m sure the legendary Scorsese and cast will not disappoint. Who plays Hoffa? The book was almost as much about him as it was Sheeran. Frank Sheeran was a huge bodyguard for Hoffa, DeNiro isn’t that big. Where do Pesci and Pacino fit in? How far into Sheeran’s past does the script go? For me, the most interesting parts of the book were Frank retelling his background. Boxing matches with kangaroos and his abusive father(“I ain’t your punching bag no more”) losing his virginity to the “snapper”, his service in WW2 that desensitized him to the point that a mob hit man was an inevitable career choice. Where can all this fit into a script and how much of the good stuff gets edited or becomes deleted scenes? This movie will have to be like 3 hours long. Can’t wait to see it but I hope it’s an accurate portrayal…
what are you talking about? ”Scorsese can’t make enough movies”??
Look at Hugo, a really amazing picture. Scorsese still have great things to show.
I can’t wait to see The Irishman with my favorite actor and director together again.
This is a fantastic book. I read it 8/9 years ago when it came out. You really do develope a fondness for “Sheeran” as the story is told. I am a bit miffed as to how “De Nero” is playing him in a movie. He looks absolutely nothing like “Sheeran” The whole thing sounds very thrown together with very little thought put into it. Kinda sick looking at those same old one trick pony gangster actors who’s time has passed.
