Ever since we broke the news of former boxer Mike Tyson‘s guest stint on NBC’s veteran crime drama Law & Order: SVU, the casting has become a lighting rod for controversy as it involves Tyson, who was convicted of rape 20 years ago, appearing on a show about getting justice for sex crime victims. NBC has now moved up the episode, originally scheduled for February 13, to February 6. According to the Washington Post, the move was made so that the Mike Tyson episode does not air on the eve of One Billion Rising, a global event supporting rape and abuse survivors. It follows weeks of pressure from advocate groups who have protested the casting, including launching a petition asking NBC to recast the role. In a recent TV Guide interview, Tyson, who continues to profess his innocence in the 1991 incident involving a Miss Black America pageant contestant for which he served 3 years, defended his gig. “I’m just trying to feed my family,” he said. “I’m clean and sober five years, I haven’t broken any laws or did any crimes. I’m just trying to live my life.” Tyson plays Reggie Rhodes, a murderer on death row whose violent actions may in part be the byproduct of a horrible childhood. His case attracts the attention of Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and defense attorney Bayard Ellis (recurring guest star Andre Braugher) during an SVU investigation. Also guest starring in the episode is Ed Asner as someone connected to the investigation. This marks the first time Tyson is portraying a character other than himself.

The dude paid his dues aleady! who are we to stop him for trying to provide for his family! we got to give him a chance, he does alot of charity work and you can see that he is remorseful and has a heart! think about it as if it were your family member. You would want that person to rise above and conquer!
These over-PC crowds better leave the champ alone before he lets his tiger loose.
The only reason Tyson’s playing a character other than himself is because he’s playing a murderer-not a rapist. This should be a real stretch for the guy! You read this type of thing & your first reaction is “why this guy?” This is just such a disgusting & slimy casting choice. Putting a sex offender/rapist on a program that is defending victims of these type of offenders is extremely offensive. If he wants to feed his family-do it on some other type of show NOT THIS ONE!!!
This type of stunt casting is common for well-established shows, and I bet NBC doesn’t mind the controversy.
He has the right to feed his family and find work. I don’t care that he gets cameos in movies like The Hangover. But in this particular case, I definitely agree that this was a poor poor choice made by the casting directors, producers, network, and anyone else involved. This is a slap in the face to rape victims and rape survivors.
Mike Tyson has more integrity and decency than 90 percent of the people in Hollywood. Which is not saying a lot. I have worked in four different professions, including show biz, and I gotta say I have never met so many slimy, backstabbing, bitchy, morally repugnant human beings in my life.
Mike Tyson has hardly led the life of a role model. But he’s better than most most Angelenos working n the biz.
I have met Mike Tyson twice in 2012, including at his “Mike Tyson Cares Foundation Launch Party” at the MGM Resort in Vegas…He is one the nicest persons you will ever met…He has paid his dues, and has transformed himself into the gentleman he is today!
…and yet people in H’wood fall aaaaallll over themselves praising Roman Polanski. A man who drugged and raped a child. So excoriate Tyson but let Polanski off scott free? Sure, makes SO much sense.
At least Tyson did his time in jail.
I think NBC should be ashamed. I simply cannot believe they would cast Mike Tyson in an SVU episode. As for the comments about what a nice guy he is, that is all well and good. Being a nice guy doesn’t mean he isn’t a rapist.
I think that Mike Tyson did a great job of acting his part on SVU this evening.
Good for him.
I hope he does more acting on TV.
I would watch him.
