NBC has given a pilot order to Hatfields & McCoys, a modern-day Hatfields and McCoys drama project created by John Glenn (Eagle Eye) and produced by Charlize Theron and ABC Studios. The project, which had a significant penalty attached to it, is set in present day Pittsburgh. A startling death re-ignites the feud between these two legendary families, unleashing decades of resentment. The blue collar McCoys will put the Hatfields’ wealth and power at risk as they go to war for control of the city. Dawn Parouse Olmstead, who came up with the idea for the project, and Beau Flynn are producing with Theron’s Denver And Delilah Prods through their deal at ABC Studios. This is not the only contemporary Hatfields & McCoys project in the works. History, which aired the blockbuster three-part miniseries about the famous feud starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton, is developing a reality series featuring the descendants of the Hatfields and the McCoys.
The Hatfields & McCoys drama pitch was one of the first major sales this development season. NBC bought it in early June, a week after History’s mini broke basic cable ratings, averaging 13.8 million viewers over three nights. With its modern-day urban setting, the NBC project is not a Western, but its lineage will likely give it some of that flavor. Theron and Glenn are with WME.

How original!
This sounds terrible. Why is Charlize behind this? Is it because she’s from South Africa and doesn’t know how awful this sounds to Americans who actually know something of their history?
This sounds truly awful.
CONGRATS TO JOHN GLENN – he is the best, very talented and super wonderful guy… he deserves this project to go to series…
This is gonna suck
Read the script! It kicked ass. Lot of great people involved in this. Good luck!
Congrats to Dawn, Beau and JG!
Who’s running NBC and is it just me or have they not greenlit a single show that is not either a remake of another show or based on some kind of property?
Buy an original f*&^ng show NBC! They’re out there, you just have to think a little harder to imagine them on your network. Less difficult is to look at how your last two years of ‘branded’ shows have performed.
NBC has picked up some hot sounding properties, and I thought this was going to be another one until I read deeper into it. After getting a clearer picture, I see this is nothing more than a weaker sounding version of ABC’s, REVENGE. HUGE FAIL, NBC.
Wow! Dawn Parouse came up with the idea after the Hatfields mini did huge business on history Channel? What a genius!!! Three minutes well spent in a brainstorm session.
In the 60′s in our race to the moon the average age of NASA employees was 25.
I wish Network TV could be like that. Instead it’s the same old old people for two decades making the same bad decisions over and over again.
I wonder what mashup/remake/update they will come up with next.
No wonder no one watches TV anymore.
Okay, if I’m going to develop a “modern-day feud” set in Pittsburgh, I’d think of something more germane to the local Three Rivers community than the southern “Hatfield & McCoys” feud. I’ve got it, how about a shootout-type feud between the Heinz and Carnegie families, but using high-end Uzi automatic weapons??!! NBC can even title it “The Carnegies vs. The Heinz Ketchup Klan!”
It’s always much more fun for us peasants to see the RICH folks blasting away at each other with big-ticket semiautomatic/automatic weapons and large-scale incendiary devices! Just what we’d expect from former Showtime wunderkind/elitist hermit Bob Greenblatt — hey they can even do a crossover episode with that fun-loving serial killer “Dexter!” ;-D
You sound sad and small
Oooh, that hurts so bad, Brian (you work in NBC drama development, huh?) — where’s your sense of humor, bro? Speaking of “Small and Sad,” that’s really an excellent title for this lame arse modern refashioning of “Hatfields & McCoys.”
I’m also wondering how much of Ms. Theron’s South African background will offer artistic input in common with the subject matter of this dud of a concept — oh yeah, she comes from “The Former Land of Apartheid” and “H&M” came out of the Jim Crow “Deep South.” Now, that’s “small and sad.”
Putting heavy odds this doesn’t make it beyond pilot order…and disappears come series pickup time for the upfronts!
Like I said, sad, small, the ‘never done anything, never will’ type of min-set. Possible OWS button wearing in your past as well.
I don’t work for a network.
Agency. Not one that reps this package. In a small position. I answer phones.
It’s just that you sound very much like a person with nothing going on….
I agree that this new series sounds cluelessly awful – but the original Hatfields and McCoys lived in the Appalachian Mountains, along the Kentucky-West Virginia border, not in the “Jim Crow ‘Deep South’”.
Script kicks so much ass. JG’s one of the best writers in town, who deserves every win he gets.
any updates on “Midnight, Mass.” ?? I would love this show to get a pilot order and a series order.
You mean like Batman or Lotr or iron man. You probably paid to see movie 43. Thank god for remakes and properties.
Just pay the penalty and make something better for gods sakes.
I thought it is refreshing!!
I don’t know why people are always negative, no matter what!!
White men shooting each other with guns cause they’re crazy and hold a grudge. What kind of creatively empty minds came up with this? How did NBC talk themselves into this?
Sad.
This script was AMAZE-BALLS, I can’t believe the network took as long as it did to green light. By far the best one the network developed this season and everyone knew it.
I’m a big fan of JG’s writing; he’ll make it a winner. Congrats to the team!
NBC’s development is trash. Hatfields & McCoys. Hannibal. Dracula. Alice in Wonderland. No wonder they’re still in 4th.
I will be in the Pilot and really looking forward to it.
