Its been called “The Jersey Shore Of Appalachia”, but MTV’s Buckwild last night bested its network time slot predecessor. The 10 PM debut of the reality series, about a group of thrill-seeking young adults in small-town West Virginia, pulled in an audience of 2.49 million viewers and a 1.4 rating over its back-to-back episodes Thursday night. That’s more than 1 million more viewers than the 1.375 million who watched the premiere of Jersey Shore in 2009. Of course, Jersey Shore went on to get record ratings for MTV; at one point, in its third season, Jersey Shore had an audience of 9 million as Snooki, Pauly D and the other housemates became national topics of conversation — even attracting kind words from GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Jersey Shore wrapped up its six-season run December 20 with soft ratings.
Last month, even before it debuted, Buckwild attracted some of the controversy common to Jersey Shore when Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-WVa) called on MTV to “put a stop to the travesty called Buckwild.” He said MTV president Stephen Friedman and the network “preyed on young people, coaxed them into displaying shameful behavior — and now you are profiting from it. That is just wrong.”

I loved this show! It was down and dirty, lowbrow, get down in the mud type stuff, but that’s what America wants, folks. I love the fact that shows by JJ Abrams and other insiders fail while this trashy television wins big. THe people depicted on Buckwild are drunk, nekkid, horny, dirty, unwashed rednecks, and America loves ‘em. Stop trying to program to sophiscates – America today is dumber than a goddam door-nail and this is the type of shit we want. The dumber and hornier the better. What a business, where people trying to do high end programming end up filin’ bankruptcy while the producers of this god-awful garbage earn tens of million of dollars.

Wish you were right, JT but the networks reach a far larger population. MTV is generally part of a paid cable or satellite package. What that means is that 2.4 million viewers of paid TV is a whole lot of people and probably comparatively more than the abc or nbc number.

Umm…no you are wrong about that. The numbers are estimates (both for this show and the ones you responded about).
The correct retort is more along the lines that this show probably costs about 1/10 the amount that an episodic drama like Elementary does.
MTV also has a coveted demographic, which means that even with lower ratings they can still command higher rates for advertising because businesses want to reach the 18-24 year olds more than the demographic of Rock Center.

Also cast is the innocent/sheltered/conservative and/or religious white girl from a nice family who will be shocked and then enlightened by their roommates, although some seasons this role is filled by a male. The gay male, which apparently is a type cast that only requires one trait, that of gay, is also preset every season, because apparently MTV thinks that all gay people are essentially the same.

As a proud native of WV i was fully prepared to trash this show for its “exploitation” of the people of our state. After watching the pilot, I couldn’t care less where it is filmed, it was entertaining. The characters (yes, it may be reality, but they are characters) are mostly genuine kids enjoying life in a very small town. I found humor in their stupidity, related to their need to enjoy their lives how they know best, and –damn it– I laughed a lot. Please don’t judge their way of life if you’ve never been outside of a city with skyscrapers. Our priorities are vastly different than city life, or even “Shore” life. Enjoy it for what it is and move on to the next non-issue you care to waste your life on. Or better yet, go roll down a hill in giant tire and laugh a little.
If you find it entertaining to watch young people act like imbeciles, that’s your choice. As to their way of life, if their “priorities” are to grow up ignorant and poor, so be it. It may very well be enjoyable at 19. At 39 or 49, maybe not so much.
Gone are the days when character development was even part of the conversation. It is a race to the bottom, where the bottom feeders are waiting to pay you for your vote.

I concur! I grew up in a small farm town back East in the 70′s. We had no entertainment other than what we made, and made it we did! I’ve done the tractor tire down the hill, blew up mail boxes, jumped off of bridges into creeks, in the winter we “borrowed” Exit signs from the 90 to use as sleds, even terrorized an Amish kid or two, but it was fun, it taught us to be resourceful, to look out for one another. We might of drank, and smoked, but we weren’t sticking a needle in our arm, holding up a gas station, killing the kid down the street for his Nike’s, or flat thumbs from playing video games.
We were bred from good strong farm stock, able to take an injury and shrug it off. We worked in the fields with our parents, putting food on your table, there wasn’t time for a cry session because the day before you injured yourself rolling down a hill in a tire, and fell out half way down, and landed with your legs underneath you. When we played sports, there was a winner, and a looser. Today, every little Johnny gets a trophy, win or lose. These are kids from yesterday, when our country was strong, and the show took me back to my childhood.
Today, I am living down South, in another country town, and I’m a owner of a small thriving business. I attribute my success in who I am to where I came from. I pay my taxes, volunteer at a local food bank, and still have a flare for fire, shooting and double dawg dares.
So I say to the haters, why? Have you done better with your kids while they were raised in a daycare in the city, breathing that yummy Petro air, and never learning to have an odd opinion or backbone?

This is a country of 320,000,000 people. An audience of 1 to 9 million is hardly a basis for generalization about the culture. I used to open a radio station on Sunday mornings. I had recorded and live religous programming from 5am until noon. I developed a theory that anything you put on the air will develop an audience.

I think this is a very “educational” show, one fit for our youth to watch. It perfectly fits the stereotype of the dumb southern hick, the uneducated hayseed. I believe all children should be taught stereotypical portraits of people, real or not, as long as the network can make money off it.
