Ahead of the debut of NBC‘s midseason drama Deception tomorrow, the network has given a straight-to-series order to another hourlong project from the Deception team of creator/executive producer Liz Heldens and Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun’s production company BermanBraun. Created by Heldens and Deception co-executive producer Peter Elkoff, Camp has been picked up for 13 episodes to air in the summer. This will be Heldens and BermanBraun’s third series on NBC following medical drama Mercy, which Heldens also created, and Deception. Elkoff also worked with Heldens on Mercy.
In the tradition of Meatballs and Dazed And Confused, Little Hawk Family Camp is a wicked slice of lake-side heaven. In the one-hour dramedy, parents decompress with gin while teenagers make gleeful mischief and fall in and out of love. “In our desire to make summer an exciting place at NBC along with our signature unscripted shows like America’s Got Talent, The Voice and American Ninja Warrior, we developed a scripted dramedy we love with BermanBraun that has rich and dysfunctional characters in that great setting where millions of families and young people go each summer: camp,” said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke. “Most of us have had great experiences at camp, and this show — created by two of our favorite producers, Liz Heldens and Peter Elkoff — is sophisticated, funny, and emotional, and we think it will be the ideal summer series for us.” Camp will be produced by Matchbox Pictures (The Slap) and BermanBraun. Heldens and Elkoff executive produce with Berman, Braun and Gene Stein. Production is scheduled to begin in Australia in March.
Next summer is shaping up to be one of the strongest in terms of original scripted series offerings on the broadcast networks. ABC has Mistresses and the fourth season of Rookie Blue. (The network also greenlighted sci-fi drama series Weird Desk for summer but subsequently scrapped the project.) CBS has the high-profile Stephen King-Steven Spielberg drama Under The Dome as well as Season 2 of Unforgettable. In addition to Camp, NBC has three new scripted series that are yet to be slotted — dramas Hannibal, Crossbones and and comedy Save Me — so it is conceivable that more original scripted content will make it to the summer. (A fourth new scripted series, Dracula, is eying a fall 2013 launch). Heldens and BermanBraun are with WME.

Does anyone know what shows as of now are on tap for this summer?
You gotta hand it to Nbc.They seem to(tongue firmly in cheek)always be on the cutting edge of brilliant programming choices. I strongly suspect the number of people actually away at camp will outnumber the number of viewers watching Camp. Nbc should get over themselves. At least try creating something people will actually WANT to watch. If it wasn’t for a very few notable exceptions i.e. The Voice,Revolution & Sunday Night Football-Nbc would barely qualify as a network. By the way,Thursday nights are completely dead on Nbc. But,I’m sure a summer program(such as Camp) will lead this so-called “network” to the promised land.
Agreed. NBC has transformed from Must-See TV to the Epic Fail Network. Trying to mimic hit shows on other channels seems to be its primary game plan. What’s “Modern” on ABC may be “New” on NBC but it doesn’t make it fresh or original. The way the Olympics coverage was mishandled, one would think NBC would lose its exclusive rights altogether. The Today Show has become so Yesterday, no wonder the more consistent and stellar GMA rules daytime nowadays. NBC would do the world a favor if it just went off the air. Hardly anyone would miss it.
Yes, because the millions of people who no longer go to camp won’t be watching? Get over yourself.
This show will eventually fail, not because it is airing in the summertime, but produced by two people who ruined their respective networks at one time.
I’m sorry… what Network do you think is making choices that are SOOOOO much better? it’s a crap shoot.
Part of NBC’s problem is that it’s trying to win first place… their thursday nights used to be a spectacular evening of smart and original comedies with interest characters and great writing – 30 Rock, The Office, Parks & Rec, Community… but none of those shows were ratings bonanzas. So what?
ABC is doing so much better? They canceled Happy Endings and B in Apt 23, and they do shows like How to Live With Your Parents and The Neighbors, among many other lackluster or plain bad shows.
Fox? CBS… give me a break. Great, they have the most viewers (according to an irrelevant and out of date ratings system that makes no sense and is destroying TV)… they also have terrible shows, both in the shows the cancel (Partners) and the shows that are hits (2 1/2 Men, et al).
This is good news. There should be more dramedies. I will keep this one on my radar.
I *REALLY* want Bob Greenblatt to succeed, as a fan of his transformation of Showtime – here’s hoping he can make his mark with Deception, Camp, and other projects.
“Production is scheduled to begin in Australia in March,” tucked away nicely there at the end. That’s some long-distance runaway production going on right there.
Because Deception is so good? The pilot was worse than trash and leaves a much important question than who killed the daughter: Why Marin Hinkle, why would you do this to yourself? I know same reason as Two and a half Men… but still…fool me once…
Berman Braun is like the Troma of TV with their cheap, fast, unimaginative programming that fills bargain basement needs. At least it isn’t being shot in Canada like most of the summer blow offs. I don’t know how many people can relate to camp experiences in Australia. Will there be boomerangs and kangaroos.
Dazed and Confused has absolutely nothing to do with summer camp.
NBC needs to let go of their uber-control over their writers, etc., and quit dumbing down their shows.
What do they have against excellence?
Does Braun & Berman do any unscripted programming? I recall reading that they brought in the Joe Millionaire guy from Rocket Science Laboraties and Angel City Factory but I think he took both of those shops into bankruptcy. Has he put anything on the air since he’s been there?
…he of the dwarf-tossing show and anything else mike darnell was too ashamed of to hand to legit producers.
