Will & Grace alum Sean Hayes has moved closer to returning to NBC‘s primetime as the star of a comedy series. NBC has given the green light to a comedy pilot starring Hayes and written by Better Off Ted creator Victor Fresco. The untitled multi-camera comedy, from Universal TV and Hayes and Todd Milliner’s Hazy Mills, centers on Sean (Hayes), who must figure out how to parent his 14-year-old daughter, who just moved in, while navigating a temperamental new boss at work. Fresco, Hayes and Milliner executive produce.
Launching a comedy series toplined by Emmy winner Hayes has been a priority for NBC. “Sean is a friend, and I think it’s time for him to star in a comedy again,” NBC topper Bob Greenblatt said at last year’s summer TCA, when he announced a deal to develop a half-hour starring vehicle for the actor-producer. It resulted in a Peter Tolan-written project about a gay couple raising a 12-year-old, which didn’t make the cut to pilot last season. Developing a comedy for Hayes to star has also been a top goal for Universal TV-based Hazy Mills. “We’ve got to get Sean Hayes back on television and out of the office,” Milliner quipped when Hazy Mills signed a new deal with the studio in April. “It’s great having him in the office but he is a sitcom star.” On screen, WME-repped Hayes next recurs on the upcoming second season of NBC’s Smash, reuniting with former Will & Grace co-star and Smash leading lady Debra Messing.

Sean’s one of the truly good guys. Big congrats.
so basically it’s up all night, minus the wife?
Yes basically! Except for the fact that there isn’t a wife and it’s not a baby but a 14 year old girl. So yeah, it’s just like Up All Night!
/sarcasm
Deadline just said Mya Rudolph was offered a part in this, presumably as the temperamental boss, right after they pretty much false started trying to make Up All Night into a multi-cam workplace comedy. So it basically IS that show with some tweaks. I kinda hope she doesn’t take it. She can’t keep playing that part.
Can’t wait.! Totes, brill!!!
Looks like NBC thursday is shaping up to include Michael j Fox and Sean Hayes. Get another multi-cam to partner with Hayes and a good single cam to pair with Fox and they may have a shot. Revamp the whole night. with 30 Rock and the Office leaving and 1600 Penn so awful and soon to be cancelled, no need to keep parks and rec or community on thursday if at all. Start all new Thursday NBC! Go for it!
Why would this go to Thursday night when it’s a multi cam comedy? If anything it would go with Whitney and Guys With Kids.
Congratulations. It will be great to see you on TV again. Keep us posted.
Great Actor !!!! I will be watching this !
YES!! Get Sean OUT of the office and BACK in a SITCOM!! He is AMAZING and I can’t wait for his new show. I loved him so much in WILL & GRACE.
If I was ever going to produce a multi cam, there would be only 2 people I would want to write it, Carter Bays/Craig Thomas or Victor Fresco. Fresco and Hayes, this should be fun.
I could see NBC pairing this and Michael J. Fox’s show together on Thursdays nights next season.
Michael j fox show is single camera. Sean Hayes show is multi camera.
The Sean Hayes show needs to be paired with a multi cam.
NBC, stand by your multi cams! I kind of like Whitney, but I love Guys With Kids. I thought at first it was going to be a show about bumbling dads but I was told to watch it and its great. . It’s just funny and I love the characters. Especially Erin Hayes and Zach Cagger. Put that with your Sean Hayes show. Makes a family hour.
Am very much looking forward to this. Always great to have him on screen.
Now, can they cast Megan Mullaly as the boss or the nosy neighbor and the Jack/Karen reunion is complete?!!!! Pleaaaase NBC…
Sean’s recent interview in Emmy Magazine was sad. Living to work is empty and lonley. Pay it forward someone else could use the paycheck and/or a big break. Don’t actors every retire? Not all of them have that much range.
I love Sean Hayes! I can twait to see this come out!!!!
Wishing everyone at Hazy Mills continued success. Nicest guys in the biz.
If NBC has any guts they would stand by their multi cams because this clearly would fit better with Guys With Kids. Sadly, this is like the only multi cam NBC has picked up or has in the works. Everything else is single cam. Thing is, if you put this show on thrusday it would be with Parks and Rec and the office. Those shows aren’t family shows so why would this show fit on thursday? It’s the same deal with Guys With Kids and Whitney. Yeah, they’re both multi cam but the type of humor is incompatible. One is adult (whitney) and the other is family (Guys With Kids).
Can’t Wait…..My Brilliant Masterful Shining Star (LOVE ALWAYS)
The show is fun, but very very wasteful. They are teaching these kids its ok when things dont work to just throw it away..and it will magically disappear. The projects dont utilize the materials well leaving lots of waste to throw away. He washes his hands and possibly for effect turns on the water, talks to the camera…water still running, then puts soap on his hands, water still running… procedes to lather his hands…water still running, talks again….by now almost a gallon of water has been wasted. The kids inherit what we give them, and as of now we will be giving them lots and lots of trash.
