USA Network has ordered a third season of original drama series Necessary Roughness. Its pickup is for 10 episodes, down from 12 for Season 1 and 16 for the series’ current second season. Necessary Roughness stars Callie Thorne as New York Hawks sports psychologist Dani Santino, who struggles with the threat of losing her practice while attempting to keep her personal life intact. Created by Elizabeth Kruger and Craig Shapiro, Necessary Roughness hasn’t been a breakout hit for USA but developed a loyal audience and has been pretty consistent. The summer portion of its current second season premiered with 3 million Live+Same Day viewers in June and wrapped with 2.9 million for the August finale. The Sony TV/Universal Cable Prods show gets a significant DVR boost, with its Season 2 premiere viewership rising to 4.6 million in Live+7. The show’s five-episode winter season launches January 23. “Necessary Roughness is an important page in our network playbook,” USA Network Co-Presidents Chris McCumber and Jeff Wachtel said, keeping with the sports theme of the series. “With a standout team of actors and writers playing at the top of their game, the upcoming seasons promise to deliver high-impact and creative storytelling.”
Necessary Roughness, which earned a Golden Globe nomination for Thorne, was the last summer USA series whose future had not been determined. It joins its companions Royal Pains, Burn Notice, Suits, Covert Affairs and White Collar, which all have been renewed. Like Necessary Roughness, the orders for Royal Pains and Burn Notice were for fewer episodes than their current cycles. Meanwhile, USA opted not to do additional seasons of Fairly Legal, Common Law and Political Animals.

Gotta love USA. How they got a season out of this thin soup, let alone three seasons, is worthy of a Paley panel.
Hilarious. Wait until you see Graceland. Its truly innovative, a series where nothing happens onver and over.
I’ve had fun with the series but after seeing what Callie Thorne did on Rescue Me, her talent is really squandered here. She is an incredible actress capable of so much more than she is given in NR.
Don’t forget Psych which was also renewed.
Should of cancelled it..The 1st season was decent, last season terrible. Only gon get worse.
But it on Cinemax and I’m there…
USA doesn’t know what they’re sitting on. They need to release the twins!
Saw the new season 3 episode. I am very disappointed. By the end of S2 it seemed that Callie was stronger and coming into her own, now she seems like a scared little mouse and her life’s falling apart. Why she can’t date either of her peers is beyond me. It doesn’t seem like it’s written into her contract. She seems to be making some sort of narrow minded moral high-ground decision. The season premier was awful. Terrence goes to he’ll and back, but still can’t show any humility. Playing on his ego a 3rd season is tiresome. The blatant overthetop stereotyping was irritating the first two season. I guess I gave this show more props than it was worth. I’m a Callie-Nico fan and all the buildup over two seasons all we get is a kiss and she’s back in her cage. Also, What’s up with her son getting off with community service. With the amount he had in his car, that’s just crazy. Would have been better if they had convinced the fr
Sorry…System accepted the comment mid sentence.
As I was saying that storyline should have been played out so that I could at least believe in the BS.
Anyway I might guve this one more watch, but I think it’s in my rear view mirror.
