BREAKING: New Line Cinema is moving forward with the cult classic Y The Last Man, setting Dan Trachtenberg to direct the film. The helmer, with a commercials background, put himself on the map after generating his own trailer for a faux movie based on the videogame Portal.
Y The Last Man is the dystopian science fiction comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra published by Vertigo beginning in 2002. It focuses on only man to survive the apparent simultaneous death of every male mammal on Earth. The 60-issue series was repackaged in book firm and the series won five Eisner Awards. The film has a script by Matthew Federman & Stephen Scaia.
The film is being produced by Benderspink and David Goyer, with Michael Disco and David Neustadter overseeing for New Line. Trachtenberg is separately attached to helm Crime of the Century, the Universal film which has Chris Morgan producing. That’s being scripted by Daniel Kunka.
ICM Partners reps Trachtenberg along with Oasis. CAA and Mosaic reps the scribes.
Here is Trachtenberg’s Portal short:

Whoa, this is surprising. Loved this guy’s old podcast and think he’s a fun new talent. Hoping for the best as I love the comics as well.
From Dan becomes a man to Dan becomes THE man.
Great news! I’m so happy for Dan. I first heard of him on his old video podcast the Totally Rad Show and have met him a few times at PAX & SXSW. Very cool guy. Happy to see him succeed!
Best. Comic. Ever. And a great choice with Dan… Such a talented guy and perfect for this type of genre material.
hoo hoo hoo – hoosier!
Loved his portal short. He’s great for this.
Ben Rowe is a stud.
As an old TRS fan, I am overjoyed at this news. Congratulations, Dan!! This is amazing news, and you totally deserve it.
This is great news but wish New Line wasn’t handling! They can’t develop projects other than their terrible raunchy comedies. Where is Gears of War?! Hopefully this’ll be rolling before Warner Bros. shuts them down after Hobbit #3.
I’ve always felt that a cable format would be better suited for this project.
I was kinda of hoping that someone from AMC would catch on.

sooooo… glad DJ Caruso isn’t doing it with LaBeouf but what is it about this guys silent portal film that indicates he will be a good fit for this NON action oriented yet highly thought provoking material with heavy traces of comedy? wouldn’t have agreed before but after walking dead this would be GREAT cable episodic material… if done right. a two hour action movie version sounds painful.. but my hopes are hi… someone like Danny Boyle would get the right tone and it’s up his alley in a strange way.
The Crime of the Century script is bad ass, too. Needs to be made.
I don’t know how much the script plays up the thriller and world-building elements of the graphic novel, but “Y” deserves a director that’s used to getting great performances out of actors. Yes, it’s a road movie, but it would be nice if the performances capture the eccentricities that Vaughan built into his characters.
This is amazing news. Dan is a great guy with love for the genre and skill to match!
Great choice. Dan is perfect for this. Way to think outside the box NLC.
Super excited that someone who really loves the material will be directing. It’s gonna be a big job for sure. But little Danny Tractenburg might just pull this one off.
“repackaged in book firm” Even taken out of context this makes no sense to me. If it had been Google they may would have written: perhaps you meant to say “repackaged in book form”
Just doing my job “To Correct and Serve”
Um, no. Totally wrong director. This project will fall apart.
Mostly all the movie are about cult which simply mean the end of the world
Dan has shown his incredible talent in the making of Portal…sure The Last man is going to be Awesome.
Good luck Dan. Will definitely be watching this. Beats eating fire!!
I wish Mr Trachtenberg the best on this. I’ve followed TRS for several years and wish all the hosts the best, though TRS is no more. I still believe YTLM is best served as either a mini series or a short term series on a cable network not afraid of some of the darkest elements of the story. I hope the impact will not be too compressed.
