Absence makes the heart grow fonder and ratings go higher. The much delayed start of the NHL season over protracted negotiations between players and the league scored for NBC. Yesterday’s two-game regional coverage on the network (Chicago Blackhawks vs. Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Philadelphia Flyers) posted a 2.0 overnight rating from 3:30-6:15 PM ET. That was the highest overnight rating for regular-season coverage on any network in more than a decade and the highest overnight for regular-season coverage on NBC since its recent coverage of the league began in 2006, up 67% vs. last year’s 2011-12 regular-season average.

Disney On Ice is always hiring if that NHL thing doesn’t work out.
NHL is a strange beast in the US. In many cities the NHL attendance rivals and even exceeds the NBA, and within their specific markets the TV ratings for these teams are always sky-high.
The problem, and where the NBA, MLB and NFL trounce hockey, is when it comes to getting people to watch those out-of-market games. I’m not sure anything can be done about it, but it’s good to see hockey getting little a bit of a boost in the numbers.
What gets me is that networks like ESPN, who claim to be the worldwide leader in sports, couldn’t give a tinkers damn about hockey. Barely anything on the talk shows, virtually no highlights. What ESPN is saying to the millions of NHL fans out there is that you don’t count for anything!! Absolutely disgusting!!!
ESPN is still pissed that the NHL took their puck and went elsewhere when ESPN offered them nothing to renew their contract. NHL helped setup what’s now NBCsports to compete against ESPN and they hate it and will do anything to bury hockey when they get the chance, unless its the Olympics.
