EXCLUSIVE: Open Road is in final talks for domestic distribution on Parkland, a film that recounts the events that occurred at Parkland Hospital in Dallas on November 22, 1963. They are eyeing a release late this fall, around the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The film’s written and directed by Peter Landesman, the ex-foreign correspondent and scripter of films including the upcoming The Mission who makes his helming debut on the picture. It is based on Reclaiming History: The Assassination Of President John F. Kennedy, the mammoth 1,632-page book by Helter Skelter author Vincent Bugliosi that meticulously debunked the conspiracy theories that later found their way into films like Oliver Stone’s JFK.
The book was originally set at HBO for a miniseries by Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman in 2007 along with Bill Paxton, who at the time was starring in Playtone’s HBO series Big Love. Instead of taking on the assassination and the conspiracy theories in a mini, they and Landesman boiled this down to a smaller story that covers what happened at the hospital when the world was turned upside down by the business end of Lee Harvey Oswald’s sniper rifle. It was re-calibrated as an indie film that’s being co-financed by Exclusive Media and The American Film Company, the latter of which was hatched by entrepreneur Joe Ricketts to focus on telling American history tales. Pic stars Paul Giamatti, Billy Bob Thornton, Jacki Weaver, Marcia Gay Harden, Zac Efron, Jeremy Strong, James Badge Dale, Jackie Earle Haley, Colin Hanks, David Harbour, and Ron Livingston.
I have been chasing this distribution deal for a story on the movie and was begged by Exclusive Media through their PR person Maxine (“Unfortunately, this has to go wide”) Leonard to hold this, all week. Nice to find out after the fact they put out wide an announcement on every facet of the film except Open Road. So rather than risk my scoop seeming like an afterthought, or waiting for another passive aggressive maneuver, I decided to report what I know. And I want nothing more to do with Exclusive Media or their PR person, and invite them not to darken Deadline’s doorstep because it’s a waste of our time. I’m a pretty nice guy, and this is the first time I recall feeling this way in over 25 years of doing this for Variety and now Deadline Hollywood. So, Maxine, you’ve made history. Bask in it.

Don’t blame you one bit regarding Exclusive Media. Obviously the word “integrity” appears nowhere in their corporate Mission Statement.
No big loss.
Thanks for the tip on “Parkland.” I was only 14 when Kennedy was shot, but I will remember it til the day I die.
Even the Kennedy’s think big brother took out JFK. This movie and the whole Spielberg/Hanks thing has become boring, predictable and just all around sell outs.
Classy, Mike. You realize you have the power to make or break careers, and probably drive people to tears, right?
This was the best script I’ve read in a while, a real page turner. Comes at the story from a great point of view. The Efron chatacter requires a lot of the actor, hope he can pull it off.
Seriously?? Does Hanks, Bugliosi & co. still think the American public are that dumb and naive to believe the Warren Commission? This isn’t 1964 anymore. Even more pathetic that 50 years later, certain people insist on still shoving the “official” pablum down our throats. Who exactly do they think they’re fooling? Oh, that’s right. The new generation of Twitter-heads who don’t know the real history.
YAWN! Maybe instead of calling it “Parkland”, they can call it “Park-your-brain-at-the-door”. Or how about an even better title: “George Orwell’s 1984″.
From what I understand, this will be an indie film. Indie films never seem to make it to my little town but I am hoping this one gets a wide release as I would love to see it.
Cheap shot Mike. Exclusive Media and Maxine are a pleasure to work with and have nothing but the utmost integrity. Why don’t you stick to journalism and keep your personal opinions to yourself.
EXCLUSIVE TO DEADLINE: Back on my farm, Maxine couldn’t do pr for the folks that clean the poop out of the chicken coop. Not eggsactly the best way to deal with good guys like brother Mike, Max…
Why blame the poor publicist and turn this into a witch hunt? That’s so mean spirited. You seem to have lost your perspective. It’s one part of a story that you didn’t get (and from what you say no-one else got the Open Road facet of the story either)! And i’ll bet there have been times when you had early notification from her on other stories. Is this really “life and death” for you to the point you have to vilify her by name? Shame on you.
Anyone willing to join me in publicly asking Hanks and Goetzman why they’re willing to continue the myth that denies the fact that the intellectual grandfathers of the current ruling American Taliban staged a coup d’etat in our innocent/ignorance worshipping country? Is Tom Hanks willing to be viewed as a propagandist for those who rendered the worst blow to our democracy since the Civil War?
Boy Mike, think your ego is a little out of control? Is this the same Mike Fleming that was nominated by publicists for being fair, smart and the best of the biz? What’s happened to you?
In a twist of fate, the real Parkland Hospital is in real trouble with federal health care regulators and may close down for good in April. They already lost Medicare and Medicaid, and are spiraling out of control on a path to shutting its doors. See The Parkland House of Horrors at Blogspot.
Sadly, there are some great actors who are participating in a rewriting of actual historically known facts. The book ignores and falsifies information to draw its conclusion. What a shame that people I have admired in the film industry are financially backing this garbage and acting within it.
I don’t know what’s more ridiculous, Mike’s rant, or the above comment about him having the power to make or break careers!
For a second I thought I was reading the whiny diary of a 13 year old. I have worked with Maxine for years and she is a class act.
