Given the wave of publicity, Oprah Winfrey‘s sit-down with disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong was expected to be a ratings monster and a game-changer for Winfrey’s OWN network. The first part of Winfrey’s interview, in which Armstrong admitted to doping, was big but not a record breaker. It averaged 3.2 million total viewers in its premiere telecast at 9 PM and another 1.1 million at 10:30 PM for a total of 4.3 million. The original telecast couldn’t top Winfrey’s newsmaking Oprah’s Next Chapter interview with Whitney Houston’s family, which garnered 3.5 million on March 11. The special’s premiere still ranked as the highest rated weekday telecast in OWN history across all key demos. Here are the stats:
“Oprah’s Next Chapter” Lance Armstrong (Thursday, January 17 from 9-10:30 p.m. ET/PT)

Given the hype, these numbers are just okay. To put them in context, they are about on the same level as a Hallmark Channel original movie.
They did face Idol though, these are good numbers.
No doubt Oprah’s people are doing everything possible to get an interview with Manti Teo. As long as these stories persist Oprah can build ratings.
To be fair, Oprah did a reasonably good job with Armstrong, but it was all just a stage for Lance to begin to implement his next calculated scheme.
My thoughts exactly about the oh-so-coveted “Manti” interview; you know her people are lobbying his people madly right now. The O is probably just wishing that she still had her old regular show to use for such events, remembering fondly the adulation they always garnered her in years past. But the world, and communication channels, have changed, and as her current ratings indicate, her audience has moved on.
Snark. Snark. Snark.
A reasonably good job?!?!
Have u people lost your mind? She’s the best in the business. Whether you like or dislike her, you can’t deny she’s the best interviewer there is.
You’re kidding, right? Maybe you mean “best celebrity interviewer” or “most willing to air a puff piece masquerading as hardhitting journalism,” but she’s hardly a Bill Moyers. She’s not even a Charlie Rose. Larry King? Closer.
Howard Stern the best interviewer.
Maybe if they didn’t reveal the answer to the pivotal question, “will he admit he doped?” days before it aired more people might have been intrigued enough to watch.
I think a lot of people watched the show live on the internet instead on TV. I live on the west coast and didn’t want to wait 3 hours to watch the interview so I watched it live on the internet.
Sue, it wasn’t shown LIVE. It was taped, and simulcast. Also, it aired at 6pm even in Los Angeles (which is when and where I watched it).
That said, I agree there were probably a ton of people who watched the internet simulcast, possibly some in part of the fallacious boast that it would be “live.”
It’s true. Whatever they paid for the exclusive wasn’t worth it. I think the story was, “Armstrong admits doping on Oprah” and that was on the front page everywhere for days in advance. Anything more than that are mere details in comparison.
Of Armstrong wanted a bigger audience, he would’ve gone to a major broadcast channel….. Even cable news. Many people don’t even get OWN and others can’t even find it. I watched and was bored… We already knew he was going to admit doping … and of he said anything major or newsworthy, it would be all over the need and internet the following day
wel pple might say what they want but Oprah did an exceptional job. She had everything under control. The way she started the interview demanding a yes/no answer was just amazing. It takes wisdom to make someone open up. Good works Oprah, try to make OWN available in Africa
Lance’s people leaked his answer, not Oprah’s.
I have google Verzion FIOS Guide see where I get OWN channel
BTW I wonder why Lance didn’t go to ESPN Sportcenter
He seem he was hiding something in my opinion
If he wasn’t afraid why he didn’t go to ESPN Sportcetner
How much was he paid?
Supposedly he’s worth $100 mil., but he’ll need all he’s got to take on the slew of law suits heading his way.
Everyone knew Armstrong was a liar no need to watch him say it to Oprah. Now Te’o would be much different because there are so many questions that he might be able to answer.
How many households is OWN available in? I have an extensive cable package and it’s not on any tier I’m subscribed to; seems to be stuck in a package with something called “WE.”
Lance is a narcissistic sociopathic liar. Oprah did a good job but I believe she could have pushed more and asked who else was involved seeing as though there were no conditions. He should have gone to Jeremy Paxman or Stephen Sakur.
Everyone is now seeing through this clown? He does have a mental problem. He’d give up his first-born just to come in first place and win. He has serious issues.
