Dave was a great guy and talented director. We were looking for a film to work on together. He’ll be missed by those who knew him.

Very very sad he was a true gentleman who loved and lived life to the fullest! My thoughts and prayers to his family. I will miss him dearly
Came close to making a movie with him. Always came prepared. Genuinely decent. Sad day.
Oh no…Davey you will be so missed. You are the complete person – the perfect combination of “yup – it can be done!” and “It will be safe?”. With a smile to boot. You are/were such a good friend to me and we had so much fun on the whole Water World dance etc. – you will remember that with a laugh. God is with you Davey – he has brought you home. Watch over us, as you always have, until I see oyu again. I am heart broken twice in one day.
Worked on two shows with him. Was the most upbeat, charismatic guy who could surf on his lunch hour. A true inspiration to me both personally and professionally. Total class.
Worked with him on four movies he directed. He was a great guy to work with and a great father. R.I.P. Dude!
David was a brilliant filmmaker and incredible friend. He will be missed by so many.
My wife Anne and I first met David many years ago when he was a stunt coordinator on our first movie. Over the years, we would see him from time to time. He was always warm and friendly and eager to jump right in when a job had to be done. He was very special and will be missed. We send condolences to his family.
GREAT FAMILY MAN. I FEEL TERRIBLE. A REAL LOSS. SAD SAD DAY.
In a town full of ego and fake, phony haters that would rather see you fail then see themselves succeed, David was one of those that made you aware of why we do this, his vision for filmmaking and overall passion for people is rare, especially over span of 40+ years to keep a positive outlook is tough, but David Ellis let it be known that you can be “Hollywood” and still be a great guy to be around. #Devastated #Emotional #Heartbroken
I had the priviledge to work with David on SNAKES ON A PLANE. His “livin’ the dream” philosophy was infectious and made his set relaxed and fun everyday of production. I will miss him terribly and send my heartfelt condolences to his wonderful family.
He directed my son in Final Destination 2. So sad!
As people are saying, David was hilarious and relaxed and made for a great working environment as he always saw himself as part of the crew. He also could one-up anyone in the war story department, relating tales of ludicrous excess in ways that made you feel like you missed the party of the century.
Worked with David in the 80s when he was in stunts. Great guy, smart and organized. Always came through. So sad to hear of his passing.
A very kind human and a pleasure to work with. RIP David
David was always a total gentleman and an all-around humble and great guy. He was the real deal and his passing is a sad and tragic loss.
He will be dearly missed.

Mr. Ellis did 2nd unit on one of our movies, and though I didn’t get to know him well, his exuberance was palpable in a refreshing, old school Hollywood way. Condolences to his family, and respect from one movie world lifer to another.
You meet a lot of good people in this industry. David Ellis was one of the best… I had not seen him in awhile and yet I feel a big empty space. I’m truly sorry that I won’t get to see David look at me with that warm smile of his again. My condolences and prayers to his family.
I have had the honor of working with David Ellis on two films. I have never met someone like him before. He was always the breath of life on the set. A true gentleman with a passion for his work and still believed in having fun along the way. Every person who has worked with him will tell you the same thing. He was such a wonderful and loving husband, father, a great mentor, and a skilled leader.
He has changed my life forever. You will be missed my friend. My condolences to his family. I love you all.
Enjoyed working with David in Mexico on C&PD back in ’94 and listening to his great stories. Ditto on all of the comments written above. A true gentleman. Condolences to the Ellis family.
I’m shocked and saddened. I shot behind the scenes on two of Mr. Ellis’s films. He always ran an efficient but fun set. On Shark Night 3D I recall the crew games he would craft spontaneously to relieve tension, bagel eating contests and such. The prize money would come right out of his pocket. He personally vouched for me on that gig. Much love and happy scenes eternal amigo…..
David Ellis directed my first movie back in 2008. He was a true gentlemen, funny, kind, and always friendly. I don’t know if I’ve ever met a nicer person in the Industry. I am so shocked to hear about his passing. He will be missed by so many people who loved him. RIP David.
A giant of a committed family man.. who happened to make movies for a living. If you knew David, you learned from him, if you knew him your life was elevated. We were quietly organizing a western, “Dead Even” to shoot summer 2013 in Utah. I am so sorry to David’s family. Keep surfin man…
Aloha David.. Your friend, SP.

He was a great guy to be around. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew or worked with him.
