UPDATED: The complete revamp of the judging panel with Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban could not stop the ratings decline for Fox‘s American Idol. The series’ 12th season last night opened with a 6.0 rating among adults 18-49, down 19% from the 11th Season premiere last January, and 17.9 million total viewers, down also 19%. It was Idol‘s lowest-rated in-season premiere. Still, the singing competition’s debut ranks as one of the highest-rated entertainment telecasts this season and No.1 among fellow unscripted series, including NBC’s The Voice. The two-hour opener gave Fox the highest-rated night with entertainment programming of any network so far this season and outrated the ABC, CBS and NBC combined by 11%.
Idol has been on a downswing ever since the meteoric highs of Season 6, which opened with 15.8 18-49 rating and 37.4 million viewers in 2007. The only time the show was able to stem the ratings erosion since then was in 2009 when Season 9, the final with Simon Cowell as a judge, premiered with a 11.8 in 18-49, up a smidgen from Season 9′s 11.7, while down slightly in total viewers. The following year, the debut of new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler was down 17%, followed by a 24% drop last year. This year’s cast changeover cut the decline back to 19%.
Elsewhere, it was somewhat puzzling that ABC scheduled its big Pritchett baby episode of Modern Family, in which Gloria gives birth, against the Idol season debut. The hit comedy (4.8/11), which had been building toward the birth since last season’s finale, was down 9% from last week. The entire ABC comedy block was pushed down by Idol. The Middle (2.3/7) was down 4% from last week, Neighbors (1.9/5) down 10%, and Suburgatory (2.4/6) down 8%. But at 10 PM, Nashville (2.2/6) perked up, up 5% for its best 18-49 rating since the series premiere.
On CBS, following an NCIS repeat (1.1/3), Criminal Minds (2.8/7) was down 10% from its last original five weeks ago but posted its largest audience of the season (12.5 million). Not facing Idol, CSI (2.3/6) was up 5% from five weeks ago and edged Nashville for the No.1 spot at 10 PM. The CW’s lineup also returned after a long winter break. Arrow held steady in total viewers (3.1 million) and was up a tenth in A18-49 (1.1/3) from its last fresh episode in mid-December. Supernatural also was on par in total viewers (2.1 million) and in A18-49 (0.9/2) and up slightly in 18-34 (0.9/3). NBC stayed out of contention with repeats.

All good (or, in thic case, really quite bad) things must come to an end. That includes Idol, which is rusting badly. No amount of revamps or recasting or C-list celebrity skirmishes can resurrect this show. And that’s a good thing!
Does not bode well for Idol as there is usually a significant drop from the premiere after folks check out the new judges.
Speaking of judges, Keith Urban was a bright spot, and he seems quite up to the task of being a good judge.
I think Fox will really start worring if viewership drops below 10 million.
Agree on Keith Urban. Randy seems to have checked out — and who can blame him at this point? The diva drama is already old and probably not even genuine.
Yay.
I watched the show for the first time last night — all two hours of it.
Unfortunately, there was barely any singing. Even among the contestants they sent to “Hollywood”, the singing was horrible and brief. Then for the bad singers, the segments were blatantly racist. Two Asian nerds who couldn’t sing, and an Indian labeled The Turbanator, complete with red glowing eyes.
This show is a disgrace.
I saw the bit about the Indian guy who allegedly knew a lot of Idol trivia, and the Turbantor. My son walked into the room and snorted that Nikki Minaj isn’t even a real singer; that if she ever had to actually sing she would have no career. My wife commented that she liked the “nice blond guy.” Mariah Carey looked like she wished she was in a lounge chair. Too many comical edits and animation. Don’t care if I don’t see it.
What people fail to miss: even with declining ratings, IDOL outrates almost everything on network TV…including THE VOICE. It’s not going anywhere. Try having any show generate massive ratings in its 12th season!
As far as the judges go: too early to tell but I think they ultimately will help over the long term. Urban looks like a good addition. We’ll see how they all do in live shows and what kind of group of contestants the show produces — that’ll end up dictating whether the ratings go up or not.
I agree completely. I was going to comment on the same issue. Same goes for Idol’s last season. Though ratings are declining it STILL blows other programs out of the water. It competes with NFL ratings! I didn’t watch any of this season, and like an episode or two last season. But the point is, though it’s declining, nothing is competing to get those big numbers. The sad part is, I know why people still watch it haha
DON’T KNOW WHY PEOPLE STILL WATCH*
Try having any show generate massive ratings in its 12th season!
Hell, try having any show stay on the air for 12 seasons!
“Idol” was awful last night. Too much focus on fighting with Nicki and Mariah. Yes, we already know they have a fight and get over it later.
I agree, I thought it was very strange for ABC to show that episode of “Modern Family” now instead of Feb. or May sweeps, which these types of shows typically do.
Idol needs to stop the airing of bad contestants to humiliate them. The schtick is OLD… and not funny. And you take the risk of one of these people committing suicide… But maybe you want that publicity. The show used to be about singers
Wow..Arrow survived the Idol premiere. I think this finally proves that the CW have something with this show. Maybe not as long lasting as Smallville, but definitely their best show since VD premiered.
Doctor, the patients vitals are plummeting!
Give it 10cc’s of fake controversy stat!
It’s not working, doctor, people see this bullshit series is over!
Dammit… call a long meeting to see who I can blame this and Mindy on.
A.I. could’nt have gotton worse last night. The “reality show” bit withe the two ladies had a Ryan Seacrest fingerprint all over it. Im done with this show.
Once Nicki Minaj opened her mouth we had to turn to another channel and comeback a little later. Then we noticed the subtle but mean “lets make fun of the foreigners” bit. Desperate is an understatement. Ratings will continue to drop.
Nicki and Mariah are awful. They need to act their respective ages . They aren’t funny more like pathetic. They need to be yanked off now. Randy’s stick is just getting old- too many years of the same routine .Keith was the only one that seemed to care about what was going on.
I completely missed the Idol premiere, and yet,I’m good. More & more people are just tired of it. I agree that Fox will never let it go because-What else do they have? Happy CSI was up. Adding Ted & Elisabeth caused me to start watching this show again.
I really enjoyed AI and the new judges, but then again the fatigue hasn’t set in for me because I haven’t watched Idol since Fantasia won 10 years ago. I could imagine how tired it would feel if I’d sat through the same crap for 12 seasons straight.
Feel sorry for Keith Urban and even Randy. This diva bit doesn’t work and, as Simon was always pointing out, this is supposed to be a SINGING COMPETITION. Sampled for a hour and fled. Won’t be back at least until the “real” competition begins. Can’t suffer through the Gong Show early auditions.
Well I for one am glad for Nashville.
Everyone is Okay for Judges Except Nicki Minaj. You Need to replace her with someone else. She has too much of a BIG MOUTH. Get someone who is more of a singer than a Rapper. She has taste up her ASSSSSSSSS.
I used to be a huge AI fan. The same with Survivor. I just got bored with those shows and haven’t watched either since 2011. I like The Voice but I’m sure I’ll get tired of that very soon, especially since they plan on airing it twice a year.
The only reality show that I’m really loyal to is The Amazing Race. I haven’t got tired of that show yet. And I’ve been watching since the very first season.
I doubt if I’ll check out AI in the near future which is why I’m glad that other networks aren’t afraid to compete against it like they have been in seasons past.
Last night was just a big disappointment. Not a lot of real singers. Just a bunch of goofing off. Why turn idol into a comical. That Jessica girl with the guitar should have been able to do the song she wanted to sing to start with. Atleast give the ones who are serious another try and those who look and act silly the boot. Why waste our time. If the judges can’t be judges than this show needs to go.
Have to say I think Mariah is the weak link. Nikki is over the top, but she was having fun, Keith is very low key but nice. Randy is well Randy. I think for a “legend” Mariah brought nothing to the table. She only sparked when some contestant fawned over her. Trying to be the Queen bee is fine for a MINUTE then it gets old. She is too old for that. I want her to be professional and the best judge. And I think we are seeing the aftermath of Steven and Jlo.. when the show became about the judges and not the talent. The network miscalculated. They really thought promoting the conflict between the women would draw in viewers. I was bored. I too found some of the obvious contestant focus to be a bit racist. I actually watch AI to see the singing. Not grown ass RICH women acting like they are 14 years old. I mean it is insulting to women on every level possible. The guys weren’t doing that. I had to turn the channel.
Mariah better up her game or she will go the way of Brittney Spears, Nikki calm down; you can be cute, you don’t have to try so hard, Keith be more vocal. Randy stop saying those dumb sayings.
See I fixed the show..lol
Mariah better up her game or she will go the way of Brittney Spears
C’mon DG, do you think she really cares? We now know Britney wasn’t intending on staying past one season, and Mariah probably isn’t either. Like aging baseball players or boxers, they just want to get that last big payday and then they’re outta here.
It’s time for AI to finally bid adios as this show has outlasted its welcome one too many times already and this rendition for the show will serve proof that ratings will continue to decline and people will choose other viewing options instead of watching this trashfest of a show. Thank goodness Nashville did well last night.
lost three fans lsat night, no way nickie is even close…fans for years, not this season. a judge? really?
Couldn’t Idol find someone better than Nikki Manaj? She comes across as obnoxious and abrasive and adds no value at all to the show. I have been a faithful viewer for years, but now I’m disgusted. Whose bad idea was it to hire her? I think you need ro release her from her contract and just continue with three judges. If you must have four, then just get anyone besides her.
We have watched it every season and stopped after 15 minutes of the opening show. It is no longer a family show, terrible role models. It actually started last year with Steve Tyler. The focus should be on the talent not the judges.
Sorry, you’ve lost my family.
