Who says unscripted series don’t repeat well? Reality series reruns ranked as the four highest-rated telecasts last night, ahead of all scripted series encores including dramas NCIS and NCIS: LA, whose repeat rights raked in top dollar from cable networks. Leading the way was NBC’s Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, which aired four back-to-back reruns, growing steadily to a 1.8/4 at 9:30 PM, the show’s highest-rated episode (original or repeat) since the series premiere in April. It was also the top result for the night among all programs, beating an original of NBC’s Parenthood (1.7./5), which followed it at 10 PM. The dramedy was down 15% from its last first-run episode three weeks ago. NBC won another Tuesday night in adults 18-49 (1.6/4), this time without The Voice‘s help. Univision was close second (1.5/4).
Off Their Rockers also claimed the No. 2 (1.6/4) and No. 3 (1.5/4) spots among repeats last night, the latter tying with a rerun of ABC’s reality series Shark Tank. The highest-rated scripted repeat last night was CBS’ NCIS: LA (1.4/3). Besides Parenthood, the only other original offering last night was an episode of the CW’s cancelled new drama Emily Owens, MD (0.4/1), which was even with its last original.

When there’s nothing to watch, or what’s there isn’t worth watching, anything breathing will rate. This is not an example of good reality programming, this is an example of networks not being able to develop compelling ideas that draw an audience. It’s also lazy scheduling ideas and a lack of understanding that audience’s are available year round if you just give them something worthwhile. Program 13 episodes and let them play, build theme nights of programming, bring back the 2-hour event movies and then get out of the way of the creative by allowing studios to cut opportunistic, direct-to-series models that allow more shots because there is less financial exposure for the network. The ratings that define ad rates are all over the place and with Nielsen recognizing Live +7 numbers, wake up and tell advertisers that if they want their live porting events, they need to partner better with the networks for the well being of everyone in our industry. It’s really not that implicated, it just takes courage.
All the Betty White ratings prove is that the best lead-in for any show is usually itself, always building by the half-hours. They could run a test pattern for two hours and it would build.
Had no idea Parenthood was on, it’s the holidays and we rented last night. What a great family show ! We need more good ones like that. Will not miss the next episode.
I’m done here!
