UPDATE, 2:50PM: CBS’ The Big Bang Theory has proven a bigger bang than ever. In final Thursday ratings, the comedy has adjusted upwards to hit even higher new series highs with 19.25 million viewers and a 6.1/18 rating. In fast nationals this morning, Thursday’s Big Bang Theory had already garnered a series high of 18.98 million and a rating of 6.0/17.
PREVIOUSLY, 8:49 AM: The winter break is definitely over at CBS. The network saw a full slate of original shows return strong on Thursday after their holiday hiatus. The Big Bang Theory (6.0/17) came back with a bang, delivering its largest audience ever with 18.98 million viewers. The science geek comedy’s previous viewership high was 17.63 million, set on November 15. Now in its sixth season, the series also matched its all-time high in the adults 18-49 demographic, up 11% from its last original show December 13. The riches were spread among the rest of CBS’ primetime last night: Two And A Half Men (4.6/12) had a season high in viewers, with 15.39 million, and in the demo. The other Lorre comedy was up 12% from its December 13 show. Now in its second season, Person Of Interest (3.4/9) hit a series high in viewers with 16.14 million and matched its series high in 18-49, up a solid 17% from its last original three weeks ago. At 10 PM, Elementary (2.5/7) had its biggest audience since its September 27 debut with 11.36 million. The modernized Sherlock Holmes was up 9% from its last original show on December 13. CBS won the night among overall viewers (14.895 million) and in adults 18-49.
Fox’s Howie Mandel-hosted reality series Mobbed was back for a second consecutive night of double episodes at 8 PM (1.0/3) and 9 PM (1.2/3). The former was even with Wednesday night’s 8 PM airing, with the latter up 9% from Wednesday’s later show.
ABC was all repeats on Thursday with Nashville (0.7/2) at 8 PM and back-to-back Scandal encores at 9 PM (0.7/2) and 10 PM (0.9/3). GO PERSON OF INTEREST!!!
Person of Interest !!!!!!!!!!!!
Person of interest is upgrade version of NCIS/24! But no standart CBS cop show! Much more unique, creative and entertaining with a lot of humour!
John Reese is bigger and better than James Bond. He is Reese, Mr. Reese.
These ratings are shocking and slightly disheartening. Big Bang Theory, 2 and Half Men, etc. are some of the weakest alleged sitcoms on TV and yet are also the highest rated. These shows are barely above par with the old ABC TGIF ‘comedies’ but are the similar one dimensional characters/paint by numbers scripts. I guess being family friendly and having low brow obvious “comedy” makes it easier to watch but THAT many people is surprising. If ‘Whitney’ were on CBS it would pull in at least 12 million viewers because these shows are on par with each other.
Thank you for saying so. It really makes clear what a lowbrow enterprise network television comedy is/has become. I, for one, just won’t concede that it has to be this way. Look to decades past, and there were smart, clever, funny, and even socially meaningful comedies that drew large audiences. It’s a shame free tv networks have abandoned the pursuit of intelligence (I suppose conceding those audiences to cable fare?).
I think it’s more that most of the other networks have been focused on picking up narrow-appeal comedies – some good, some bad – so “Big Bang Theory” is the best comedy left done in a mass-audience style. It’s not as good as “Seinfeld” or “Friends,” but nobody’s giving the audience “Seinfeld” or “Friends”; instead they’re turning out “New Girl” and “Happy Endings.”
“Big Bang Theory” is succeeding because it’s currently the best of its kind, just like “Three’s Company” was a huge hit in the ’70s because everyone else had abandoned old-fashioned farce. Maybe a more sophisticated multi-cam show would be a big hit too, but first the networks have to notice that there’s a demand for them that they’re not meeting. (And no, obviously “Whitney” or “Guys With Kids” aren’t it. Again, they’re not good of their kind, while “Big Bang Theory” is the best at what it’s trying to be, just like the TGIF shows that succeeded were the ones that worked.)
JJ, I thought that I was the only person who likes “Whitney!”
I have to agree with JJ about those comedy numbers for CBS. IMO,Big Bang Theory is just an average/paint by #’s comedy. I don’t get why it’s so popular. I’m even more perplexed by the popularity of 2 & 1/2 Men. That program is absolute rubbish. Crude,rude,disgusting,vile,mean-spirited and those are its’ good points. It gets much worse from there. Yet,people keep watching it. I personally stopped watching it because it had no redeeming/positive qualities whatsoever. Also, thank God Whitney doesn’t air on CBS,or, it might run forever & ever.
It’s because Nielsen and CBS are in bed together.
Big Bang Theory is very funny, easy to relate to and up on current events people think about. Obviously this comment crowd is into bashing instead of constructive comments.
No, actually. I don’t like to bash at all. But BBT is horrible, by any measure other than popularity.
Everything else was re-runs. There’s nothing you can take away from these ratings.
The last series i remember getting a 6+ (not counting Idol) was NBC’s Heroes. Though am guessing Grey’s or Desperate Housewives may have had that too…
CBS super thursday is slowly growing more and more. With best new and fresh sitcom-BBT and drama-POI the trand will only continue. Think next season CBS will move Elementary. Now POI is best CBS lead-in for new dramas and they will use that spot for new drama.
ps Its interesting to see first 15 minutes and second 15 minutes on TAHM. We see that this show is old already and can’t grow like TBBT and POI. No matter how big TBBT will be TAHM will stay at this levels.TAHM lose 4 million viewers. THat is a lot. Better compare BBT and POI with new sitcom like 2BG wich will grow, than old hit show like TAHM. No matter how huge TBBT is TAHM will stay at this levels. Now BBT and POI are growing but not TAHM. Its just too old for new fans.
Love Big Bang, but this season has been more spotty in quality. Some episodes are consistently hilarious, even brilliant, and others fall back too much on the expected gags and situations. The first episode of the new season was really off. The one about Howard’s return from space was awesome. No show can deliver in spades every week. I’m grateful to get a few belly laughs off a show that isn’t going for the lowest common denominator.
People who are down on Big Bang Theory must be in the minority. Everyone I know who watches loves it. Maybe you are missing something. Just saying!
You people seem to like something snob like girls, simple comedy maybe isn’t in your agenda, and maybe you must seek for a hungarian or mongolian comedys that might be at your high iq’s.
