Tuesday’s primetime saw another season high for CBS’ NCIS (3.8/11). With its second-largest viewership ever, the police procedural pulled in 22.34 million viewers last night. That tops last week’s season-high of 21.1 million for the long-running series, though it falls short of the record 22.87 million who watched on February 1, 2011. NCIS also saw its best rating in the adults 18-49 demo since its Season 10 premiere on September 25, growing 9% from last week’s show. NCIS: LA (2.7/7), meanwhile, was down from last week’s season high; its 17.48 million viewers marked the series’ second-highest viewership of its season. It also was down 10% week-over-week in the demo. At 10 PM, Vegas (1.6/4) drew 11.05 million viewers, topping the time slot. For the night, CBS won in total viewers (16.957 million) and the demo.

Back from its winter break, the CW’s Hart Of Dixie (0.6/2) was flat with its last original December 11. Emily Owens M.D. (0.3/1) also was even with last week’s original episode.
NBC’s double shot of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers dipped a bit Tuesday from last week’s season debut. The 8 PM airing (1.4/4) of the senior-citizen-starring hidden camera series and the 8:30 PM broadcast (1.8/5) were down 7% and 5%, respectively. After last week’s season low, Go On (1.7/4) was up 13% from its winter break return. The New Normal (1.3/3) was not so fortunate: The Ryan Murphy-produced series was flat with last week’s show and tied for its season low. Parenthood (1.9/5) was also even with its January 8 show but it did take the 10 PM time slot among 18-49s.
Fox’s Tuesday comedy block was back last night for its second week of new shows this year. Raising Hope (1.6/5) slipped 6% from last week. Ben And Kate (1.1/3) was also down from its January 8 show, dipping 8%. New Girl (1.9/5) was also down slightly, falling 5% from it last show a week ago. Ending the night for Fox, The Mindy Project (1.5/4) was flat with last week’s show.
ABC aired Modern Family (1.6/5) and Suburgatory (1.0/3) repeats. A new Happy Endings (1.3/3) followed, down 7% from last Tuesday’s show. Don’t Trust The B—- In Apt 23 (1.1/3) was flat with its January 8 show, the third Tuesday in a row with no movement for the comedy. In its second-to-last episode, Private Practice (1.2/3) edged up 7% from last week’s show.

I think it’s clear that network comedy is at rock bottom and the ratings are showing it, save for a few shows that are huge hits — M. Family, BBT. There are so many reasons why, but I’ll just provide a few for thought: people (writers who don’t understand storytelling (probably bc when you’re in your 20′s, there isn’t much to write about), executives who can’t discern good material, and the boom in improv that automatically makes you funny in a half hour world). CBS which is on top in this space has great writing for the most part (less 2 Broke Girls), and has strong performers to go with it…the same can’t be said about New Girl and the rest of the Fox block, H. Endings and Apt 23, and the shows NBC is airing — Whitney, Guys with Kids, 1600 penn, etc, etc. Sure some of them have strong actors, but none of them have the writing to go with it. The writers have created characters that don’t feel as though they exist in the “real world” and the comedy all feels fake. Not only that, it seems that priority in these shows is how hip or cool can we be, when what people remember the next day is “how interesting was that show, who do I like in that show that I can’t wait to see what happens next week,” type of thing. In my office, everyone talks about tv in terms of characters and storylines, — if it’s a comedy, it should have those things AND make you laugh. When you go for the joke over and over and over, and forget about anything else, that is when you strike out on all levels. Just my 2 cents, now time for my coffee and the exciting legal world.
Dipping 8, we await the fate of Ben & Kate.
The Tuesday night comedies on FOX, NBC, and ABC are just sad, pathetic, and perverted. Period. There’s nothing about them that would motivate a decent human being to want to watch them. They aren’t funny. I’ve seen every single one of them for at least 15 minutes. Yes, they are so unfunny or so vulgar and perverted you have to wonder what day and age we are living in when a bunch of sick white male tv execs decide this is the type of comedy people want to see in their homes. It’s like they refuse to see the truth. The comedies pulling the biggest audiences don’t depend on filth and perversity for laughs. I’ll never understand why ABC refuses to put Last Man Standing behind Modern Family when it’s pulling in a bigger audience on Friday than the two garbage comedies ABC has sandwiched around it- The Neighbors and Suburgatory. And they’re replacing the Neighbors with more perverts and vulgarity- How To Live With Your Parents….. Idiots! But enough with the losers, let’s celebrate CBS’ 23 million viewers for NCIS; 18 million viewers for NCIS 2(demo is super bad though and disconcerting considering DWTS will be back in the 9pm slot shortly….. I had a coach in high school who taught me and my teammates how to be winners. His first rule was that if you want to be a winner look at what the winners do and then work to be better at it than them. You can’t be a winner modeling your program after losers- FOX to ABC; ABC to FOX.
I think “Flat” for Hart of Dixie should be construed as a major victory, since they had no promotion and matched the premiere of the heavily promoted Carrie Diaries.
I just watched all of first season of Harts of Dixie on Netflix. I loved it. Looking forward to watching more of it.
Yes
I never saw any promo that it was starting this week. Idiots!
Fun show. Luckily, I saw it on the TV Guide website Tuesday schedule and Tivo’d it.
BTW – I was referring to Hart of Dixie
Have to love CBS and Nielsen in cahoots. Ever since CBS moped and whined back in the mid 90s, Nielsen has made sure they were back on top after NBC’s dominant run ended.
Hart Of Dixie flat?Actually,I think the entire CW as a so-called “network” is flat. They don’t appear to have any direction whatsoever. I understand every network has its’ own problems, but, the CW is truly in a class by itself. I mean, I don’t understand why they keep certain programs on (90210,etc.,etc.) when they are way ,way, way past their prime-I’m being generous assuming 90210 ever had a prime in the first place. The CW really needs to diversify its’ programming. It seems as if every single one of their shows is aimed at only the teen/tween set. Don’t they realize there are viewers besides teenagers? This network is also a joke in terms of race also. It seems you can’t even buy an african american on the CW-what’s up with that? How the hell can the CW ever compete with the bigger networks if they just maintain the status quo? They need something better. The CW could start by stopping the lies.Stop calling every show a breakout hit or whatever. Some fans say that by CW standards their programs are hits. My response to that is-NO THEY ARE NOT! How many so-called hits have been canceled on the CW over the years. Programs getting a 0.4,0.5 etc.,etc. ARE NOT HITS by any fuckin’ measure you may use. If this so-called “network” does not do something radical soon-they are going to fade away. It is a fuckin’ embarassment that they don’t realize the trouble they are in.
“This network is also a joke in terms of race also. It seems you can’t even buy an african american on the CW-what’s up with that?”
Are you for real? Perhaps you overlooked the African-American characters because they are not stereotypes there to serve up jokes? It’s actually hard to not see them. So let me remind you:
Heart of Dixie – major Lavon, the protag’s landlord and good friend who just dated an African-American guest star for some episodes.
90210 – Dixon, Annie’s brother
Vampire Diaries – Bonnie the witch
Arrow – Arrow’s stepfather
Now, if you cared to complain about the under-representation of Asian characters, you’d have more of a point…
mayor Lavon, of course
I eventually started watching the B in Apt 23, and it is hilarious…I really think that a change of network would help the series. It seems out of place on ABC, and they just haven’t promoted it properly. They also haven’t placed it in VOD for my cable carrier, so that may actually be preventing viewers from discovering the series.
Finally got to see Ben and Kate, which seemed an amusing premise. Holy shit. What a phenomenal train wreck. Every character on a show can’t be the idiot. Someone has to be smart. You’re a bad show. A very bad show.
Anthony Fremont – agreed! It’s like nails on a chalkboard for 21 minutes at a time. Unbearable. Hopefully it will be over soon.
This is one of the best seasons of NCIS. It has been excellent this year. Given that it is one of the most consistently good procedurals on tv I am glad to see it do exceedingly well.
Funny enough the last few weeks I have been watching reruns on USA and it reminds me with the current story lines how good they are at pulling off compelling multi episode story arcs.
