After making a transition from a scripted drama to a reality series, Ilene Chaiken’s L Word franchise is about to undergo another format metamorphosis, becoming a documentary. “The Real L Word is an important franchise,” Showtime’s entertainment president David Nevins said after the network’s executive session at TCA. “I want to change up the show and probably not continue it in exactly the same form. I’ve been talking a lot with (executive producers Dan (Cutforth) and Jane (Lipsitz) and Ilene about exploring sort of L Word culture, lesbian culture in places outside of New York and L.A., places where the subculture is not so defined and it’s maybe not so easy. And I think we’ll do a Real L Word documentary. We did the scripted show, did an ensemble reality show, and now it’s probably going to become a stand-alone documentary this year. But I think it’s an important franchise for us. It could be one-part, be two parts, they’re diving in doing research right now.”TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

When season 4 is goin to start from the real L word?
so are they not going to have the cast anymore? no more whitney or sara or hunter valnetine? or Lauren? whats up with that? thats what made the show like it is? cant they do both do this series like it while doing the documentary seperate?
Hello im 44 yrs old. Ive known i was gay since i was 7. I am married to a wonderful man and have a 17 yr old incredible son. They do not know about my secret. Lets keep it that way. I had a girlfriend who i loved very much she lives in so cal:) we began watching the show from the moment the first episode came on with Rose, Micky and the rest of the ladies. Please dont change it. Please i love the show judt the way it is. It brings me peace, happiness, sadness all the emotions. Its perfect! Your doing amazing work! Thank u for ur time
Like really! I agree w/ the previous two comments. I’ve grown to love all the characters in this reality show and we may be left hanging w/ season 3 being the end all?! Like wow you people are killing me! I’m a 31 yr old lesbian from Philadelphia currently living in south south jersey…I’m surrounded by ocean and my gf of 4yrs but it took me awhile and her to settle me down. I lived in La for awhile so I recognize all the bars the girls go to and I LOVE it! I relate to these girls….. Whitney probably most of all and Sara cause their journey reminds me a lot of Amanda (me) & Liza’s (the gf)….Please give me more. First u took the L word from us and now u want to take the Real L word….do u people know how many lesbians there are out here that crave tv that they can relate to? I’m shocked they’re aren’t more comments here! Me and all my lesbians would get together and watch the L word together…..of course I had at one point or another slept w/ everyone in the room….so ur shows truly depict lesbian life…I’ll stop babbling now! The diet pills are apparently working well…..had a lot to say didn’t I? Whew!
I agree with everyone else who posted before me! I LOVE LOVE the real l word. Im not even lesbian and im in love! Just seeing the emotions and everything these women go through in their lives. I only order showtime to watch this show. Please please keep the it the same don’t change a thing!
Me and my girl watched seasons 1-3. Kinda miss Mikey and Raquel but hey. I love this show. I keep waiting for season 4. But now it might not happen? WHAT?? I have showtime JUST for this show. I own all the seasons. I wanna be 90 and still having new seasons. I think I might die without the real L word. The L word was so fake and pornographic kinda appealing more to straight guys or horny single lesbians. But this is so real and loving and true. Im exactly like Kelsey. We grew up the same way, have the same style look and mannerisms. Its hella cool to have someone real out there just like you. She struggled with alcohol and i do too. I freakin love this show. Its my life. Defined.
I agree with everyone else. Removing the characters is not going to help this show, its going to hurt it!. I feel like I know the girls and also now a huge Hunter Valentine fan. I won’t watch it if no Whitney especially…I actually committed to dreadlocks because of her! please do not change the show
They better do another season. I would really like to see whitney ana sara life as a married couple
I’m straight male. I enjoy the show very much. I’m invested in the characters that have been represented in the past scripted show as well a the reality version. Changing the show now only shows how much of a gutless bag Ilene is and cannot clearly stick to what the fans want. Not only is this a sign of a shitty producer, but this probably reflects her personal commitment issues as well!!! But I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who wants to follow the girls who let us into their lives, but also want to see them go on to success and love. And I would like to continue to be a fan of them all……………
I fucking love this show please don’t change it like everyone has been saying we want to see whitney and saras life now as a married couple and I love kacy and cori and I love love lauren and hunter valentine don’t make a mistake it’ll be like killing dana fairbanks off all over again but worse because these ladies are REAL. Havnt you herd of the saying if it isn’t broken don’t fix it. This show is fucking epic and is amazingly amazing just the way it is. I mean I understand a few new people but that’s it I don’t mean to tell you how to do your job but just listen to the fans please thanks for this show I love love love itt!
I’m kaitlyn and I am in love with this show. It is my all time favorite I have watched it since season 1! I haven’t came out to my parents yet although im pretty sure they have a clue i think my dad knows a bit more than my mom because he jokes about it alot because of a time i played a “joke” on my mom*not really a joke now* saying i was bi to see her reaction but I have to my friends last year. I am currently in a relationship with a guy I’ve know my whole life and yet still have a crush on a girl I’ve know for years! Watching this show helps me so much with a lot of things and I love the way it is now please just please please PLEASE Ddont change it!!!
How about Rehoboth Beach Delaware…the story lines are endless here.
I can’t believe u guys doing this.. I fell in love with the L word and settled for the reality show and now u want to just stop everything!! PLEASE STOP CHANGING UR DAMN MINDS .. Keep things as they are we all may not love everything about the show but we love the women and couples it’s so frustrating u guy can’t even keep the same ppl!!! U have this following bc we love the orginal show please stop running and changing it up!! I look forward to June every year bc of this show .. I am so disappointed in u!!! We deserve more and if u take this show away or change it completely what else do we have??? But a I day documentary ??? THAT’S SOOOO CRAZY!!!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE !!!!!!! WE NEED OUR NEW SEASON MORE THAN EVER THIS YEAR!!!!!
I love this show!!! It helped me come to terms with my sexuality and realize that just because im not “the norm” doesn’t make me weird. I’ve fallen in love with these characters and look forward to seeing their bright futures.
Omg I love The Real L Word! I understand the Documentary route but I think they should approach that as an entirely different cast/concept. They should keep the Real L Word as a reality show and then do a documentary separate!
As I read the above posts, I can honestly say I do feel each and everyone when they try and present to the, “Powers That Be” who have the authority to either run this show or not.
For us Lesbians there truly is not that many shows that we can actually sit down and watch, to dedicate our lives to, and to actually feel a kind of certain relation to others. As i can understand that there has to be transformations and for “revamping” to excite more audience approval, I have to say that “The Real L Word” has surely brightened my life and my future. So if possible please do not take them away from us, do as others have asked. To have the ability to watch both the show and the Documentary.
Just try and realize that so many of us, whether we are Gay, Straight, Lesbian or Bi-Sexual can truly relate to the people because they are REAL. Not paid actors or actresses, the things they have gone through in life, their struggles, their success and their dreams. To take something that has grown to be such a big part of us, would truly be wrong.
Thank you and sorry for writing so much.
I agree with everyone else I love the show. It’s the only reason I have showtime. I am a lesbian in a small town with close minded people. It’s nice to see the other side of things. We have been so excited for the new season we always get together with friends and have real L word party’s. really hope you reconsider. I believe there is room for both a documentary and the reality series.
Im a straight female and love this show and appreciate these ladies for letting us in their lives….please keep going with it…..
I am a straight female who loves this show…these women have helped many women come to terms with their sexuality…it is so frustrating when the “powers that be” can’t make up their damn minds. U have the money to do whatever you want..y can’t u do both…unless the women don’t want to do the show anymore y r u not going to keep the show going…it’s just wrong..
I am a female in Texas engaged to another female and I love the show as it is. I agree with what everyone is saying. My fiancé and I watch this show every time its on and we have also grown to love these women. It really is nice to watch something that hits close to home. I hope that you can see that this show has affected so many lives in positive ways that you would keep it the way it is and also do the documentary that you want to do. Thank you..
I agree with all the comments above. I LOVE this show and would like to see it continue in it’s same format, however, I also agree with the need to expand the show in the sense of having a dose and representation of all lesbians. For example, I am african-american residing in Texas and lesbian lifestyle is a bit different down south. I would love to become apart of something like this. We ( friends ) have been looking for a vessel to help depict how lesbians really are from all walks of life. Great Show in all!!!
Not a lesbian, but I have to say that seeing people represent a group of people and a culture that has been completely marginalized is very refreshing. Our society needs exposure to people who are not afraid or ashamed to be who they are… and clearly people are invested in these brave women. It’s a HUGE mistake to end the Real L Word. A lot of people will be very unhappy (maybe even cancel their subscription to Showtime… I know I will).
I had showtime as a trial and because of The Real L Word I kept Showtime. You should not change something that will make you lose viewers. You have an amazing show please please keep the show ya add different people if that makes you happy. Just please keep the girls we love them. I am their same age and I can relate to most of their happiness and issues. If you care about the views please keep the show!!
I think they should wait to change it because I do find a documentary to be quite an interesting idea but I still want to know how everyone is doing.
Let’s be “real” Showtime, the only reason I even subscribe to your network is because of the the real L word. It was devastating when you took the L word from us, but now this….I will surely cancel my subscription as I’m sure many others will….WAKE UP
