BBC America has posted the first three minutes of its upcoming period drama, Ripper Street. The eight-part crime series, starring Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg, is set in 1899 London in the aftermath of the Jack The Ripper murders. Series creator Richard Warlow recently said each episode will provide a “stand-alone crime.” The third installment just aired in the UK on BBC One this past Sunday and the series debuts on BBC America on January 19.

Production values seem well done, acting seems convincing… but the premise left me feeling uninspired and bored. I shall pass.
Crime-of-the-week storylines don’t sound very interesting. One case should span the whole eight episodes instead.
The Ripper Murders occurred in the Whitechapel slums during the summer and fall of 1888, ending with Mary Kelly’s murder in November. If this show is indeed set in 1899, that’s eleven years after the crimes–hardly the “aftermath.”
The series is set in 1889 from most reports. Months after the events of the last known Ripper murder. It’s interesting that we know what we know now. But imagine at the time, and the feeling of the people, and the paranoia.
Why is this being aired when Copper landed with such a thud?
Matthew Macfadyen on any screen esp. American I’m there!
I happened to see the first episode while visiting the UK. It was enjoyable, but for it to be shown on BBC America, it will have to be heavily edited, which is too bad.
It looks better than Copper, come on.
