Rob Corddry has been tapped as the lead in Spy, ABC‘s single-camera comedy pilot based on the 2011 Sky 1 comedy produced by Hat Trick Prods. Spy centers on Tim (Corddry), a well intentioned father of a highly intelligent and verbal son, who also happens to be his complete opposite, who inadvertently takes a job at the Secret Service in order to prove himself a worthy father. On the British series, the role is played by Darren Boyd. Corddry’s casting is in conjunction with an overall deal he has signed with ABC. The original series’ creator Simeon Goulden wrote the U.S. version, produced by ABC Studios and Hat Trick and executive produced by Goulden and Hat Trick’s Jimmy Mulville. Corddry, creator/exec producer/star of Adult Swim’s Childrens Hospital, which won an Emmy in September, also created and exec produces Adult Swim’s new series Newsreaders. As an actor, he recently did arcs on ABC’s Happy Endings as well as on Fox’s Ben & Kate. Corddry, repped by WME and Principato Young, had 3 films at Sundance: In A World…, Hell Baby and The Way Way Back, which landed a blockbuster $10 million distribution deal with Fox Searchlight.

I’m assuming this is a mistake. He probably has a supporting role on the show (probably as Owen). Tim is supposed to be an everyman (in the vein of Scott Foley or Colin Ferguson). Not someone like Corddry, who is basically only able to play creeps and jerks. Perhaps Nate Corddry as Tim, but Rob, no way.
On the flipside, everyone seems to think RC is God’s gift to comedy, so this gives Spy a very good chance at being picked up.
I don’t see it – maybe because I still see him as Alan, Jeff’s lawyer colleague, on Community. I think Scott Foley is too conventionally good-looking to play Tim.
If you think about it, the character of Tim is similar to the character of Phil Dunphy on Modern Family. I could totally see Ty Burrell as Tim.
I wonder who they’ll get for the kid…
Rob Corddy sounds like he would be better playing as the boss than the protagonist.
The pilot is literally written in Rob’s voice. He’ll nail it.
Corrdry won’t cut it. A better choice is Garret Dillahunt.
Too bad he is busy with Raising Hope (where he is awesome). Although if the pilot has been rewritten to suit Corddry, I guess that won’t be that bad. I still don’t like him very much, which is weird because I like all the people from the same type of projects he works on (Rob Huebel, Jason Mantzoukas, etc.) But if he has a good supporting cast, this should be okay.
This is a brilliant idea and match of great talent with great material. Amazing
This is perfect. For those who’ve seen the original Spy, Tim is a borderline idiot, which is totally within Rob’s wheelhouse. And for those of you who would question his ability to play a good father, I direct you to Butter, available now on Netflix streaming.
As soon as I saw this this morning, I thought of Butter. I think he can definitely do this (I just don’t think it’ll get picked up).
It’s great it is being remade in the US (as the original version all along has been said to have been made in a very American way) but who will play Chris (favourite character) but also I feel Phillip is a very british character how will be portrayed in America?
They’ll probably pick a newcomer for Chris. If not, perhaps Jon Heder? For Philip, either Jonathan Slavin or Thomas Lennon. However, I fear they might be a bit too similar to Rob Corddry (Slavin in mannerisms, Lennon in delivery).
I think Rob Corddry is hilarious and will no doubt be great in this.
Rob isn’t the man for the lead in here….doesn’t fit him…Zachary Levi would be awesome.
